"To This You Were Called": Discipleship, Suffering, And Social Identity In First Peter, Shane Patrick Gormley

At the center of First Peter’s rhetoric stands an exhortation to “follow” in Christ’s footsteps (2:21). Several scholars have suggested (sometimes off-handedly or in a singular footnote) that this specific exhortation utilizes the technical language of “discipleship,” but only to support a particular piece of the letter’s paraenesis (2:18–25). I contend that such a suggestion, while a helpful place to start, does not go far enough. With this study, I propose that we may read First Peter comprehensively as a summons to discipleship in accord with ancient understandings of education, exemplified in the multifaceted system of Hellenistic paideia. Invisible chronic illness is a common, complex phenomenon that applies to any illness, disease, or collection of symptoms that is not always or ever outwardly apparent or discernable to onlookers, even in biomedical contexts. Interestingly, despite 96% of those with chronic illness fitting under the “invisible” umbrella, patients are frequently misdiagnosed, invalidated, dismissed and marginalized because they do not “look sick” enough within the context of the disease-focused medical model. In this paper, we argue that Derrida’s account of the uncanny experience of being haunted by a specter reveals consciousness to be constitutively haunted. From Derrida’s account in Specters of Marx, we locate the cause to the possibility of haunting from the inability to complete a so-called work of mourning. We note primarily the development of Derrida’s account of specters with respect to the psychoanalytic distinction between mourning and melancholia. We go on to compare Derrida’s characterization of a haunted subject to Hegel’s conception of Unhappy Consciousness to discuss the possibility for a haunted consciousness to be assimilated into a …

Introduction: Health outcomes for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples are very poor. This is considerably worse in remote regions. The East Pilbara, where the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities of the Martu and Nyiyaparli people reside, is one such remote region.

Methods: This review explored the grey literature relating to the health services and health outcomes of the Martu and Nyiyaparli people. Search strategies included specific search terms as well as the systematic search of specific websites likely to inform this review. Through the Artists + Researchers (ARx) program, Bill was teamed with Dr. Gretchen Bachman, OTD, OTR/L, MBA, CEAS, CHT, and Dr. Cindy Ivy, OTD, OTR/L, MEd, CHT, occupational therapy professors and researchers from Northern Arizona University. Jargon Of Authenticity In The Chilean Conservatism: Reactionarism, National Fantasies And Military Fascism (1902-1980), Claudio Aguayo-Borquez

This essay aims to cover one of the tendencies of Chilean reactionary thought, based on the hypothesis about the impossibility for a non-Catholic conservatism in Chile. In effect, secularism was drastically diminished by the persistence of ultramontane political theology, from archbishop Rafael Valdivieso to the Catholic-romantic historicism of Jaime Eyzaguirre. The main archive of this work shows the confluence between Palacios’s thesis on the “Chilean race”, from 1902, the dialectical and anti-intellectualist portalianism of Edwards and Encina in the interwar period, and the military belicology based on Ludendorff’s doctrine of total war among military intellectuals during the 70’. For four years (2017-2022) I was part of a teaching team to teach the subject of International Relations (IR) to second-year Bachelor International Studies students. The course was structured to have twelve lectures; these lectures were to be delivered by the course leaders to an audience of 500-800 students. In addition to the lectures, students had four tutorial classes, where the rest of the teaching team worked with smaller groups of students (12-15 students in each group). Asexuality exists at the margins of sexuality, often invisible to and misunderstood outside—and even within—the LGBTQIA+ community. As an identity that generally refers to those who experience low/no sexual attraction, asexuality challenges the broadly held notion that everyone experiences sexual attraction. Given the centrality of sexuality to a great deal of feminist scholarship, the absence of asexuality in many feminist classrooms is striking. Moreover, decades of feminist and queer research and pedagogy have demonstrated the vast, liberatory potential of centering the margins as we seek to understand the social world. Intense emotions in classrooms are often interpreted unfavorably because of how bodies can disrupt a space that centers the mind. However, bodies can also reflect students’ and educators’ emotional relationships with course material. Through an elucidative reflection on the pedagogical power of racialized emotions, this critical commentary considers the transgressive possibilities of racial empathy as a Black feminist epistemology. As a Black woman graduate student instructor, tensions emerge in classrooms around what it may mean when Black students and I are crying, and white students are not.
