Sherem's Accusations Against Jacob

An interesting encounter is reported in Jacob 7 between Sherem and Jacob. In light of the ancient Israelite criminal law that was in force among the Nephites at this time and at least to the reforms of Mosiah (2 Ne. 5:10; Jarom 1:5; Mosiah 17:7-8; Alma 1:17), it is evident that Sherem's accusations were serious allegations. On three accounts, he accused Jacob of offenses punishable by death.

Fourth Annual Book Of Mormon Lecture Slated

The fourth annual F.A.R.M.S. Book of Mormon lecture will be presented by Dr. Allen J. Christenson on February 27. The title of his lecture is "The Mayan Festival of Resurrection and the Book of Mormon." This presentation will be based on years of research into contemporary and ancient Highland Mayan religious festivals. Dr. Christenson will trace these festivals through time, examine their symbolic treatments of the tree of life and of the conflict between death and the underworld, and note Book of Mormon parallels. He will illustrate his presentation with numerous slides.

Eldin Ricks, professor emeritus of Ancient Scripture at BYU, who was a friend of F.A.R.M.S. and a tireless advocate of the Book of Mormon, passed away last month. In our last newsletter we reported his generosity in donating copies of his wide-margin edition of the Book of Mormon to F.A.R.M.S. to make it more widely available---a good example of his efforts on behalf of the scriptures (and their Author). We will miss him.

In 1904 an English professor at BYU, Nels Lars Nelson, began publishing a little-known magazine entitled The Mormon Point of View. Although his valiant effort was sustained only for four issues, Nelson was able to write and publish several eloquent and insightful articles.

F.A.R.M.S. would like to announce the creation of an electronic discussion group for ancient studies and Mormon scripture called MORM-ANT (Mormonism and Antiquity). This is a listserv mailing list rather than an electronic bulletin board; submissions will be forwarded as electronic mail to all participants in the group. The topics for discussion in this group will be as wide-ranging as the interests of its participants, but generally reflecting the research goals and interests of F.A.R.M.S.

Expedition To Arabia Postponed

The F.A.R.M.S. expedition to the Wadi Sayq has been postponed by the Omani government because of sensitive negotiations between Oman and Yemen that concern territory near Wadi Sayq. However, the Omanis seem interested in a scholarly study of the wadi, so we are optimistic that the expedition will be rescheduled for the first part of January.

On November 20, 1992, at Stanford University's Kresge Auditorium in Palo Alto, California, Latter-day Saints will be represented at an Interfaith Conference entitled, "Unraveling the Mysteries of the Dead Sea Scrolls." This 3-hour conference starting at 7 p.m. will be filmed by the Vision Interfaith Satellite Network (VISN). An edited version of the conference will be presented as a one-hour special nationwide to a potential viewing audience of over 20 million.

The opening words of the Book of Mormon, "I, Nephi" (1 Nephi 1:10), raise an interesting issue: Are the "personal names contained in the story ... satisfactory for that period and region"? While an answer to that issue for all the names in the Book of Mormon still awaits investigation, we seem to be in a position to comment on the authenticity of the name Nephi.

Under the Foundation's direction, Clark spent many hours interviewing and filming people involved in the work of F.A.R.M.S. They talk about their experiences and about what the Foundation stands for and attempts to accomplish.

Some Latter-day Saints have long been struck with the similarity between certain characteristics of the god Quetzalcoatl, as known from native traditions in Mexico and Guatemala, and Jesus Christ, whose visit to Lehi's descendants is described in Third Nephi. In the book, An Ancient American Setting for the Book of Mormon (1985), the dramatic decline of the god Quetzalcoatl in the period around A.D. 200 at the giant city of Teotihuacan near Mexico City was discussed in comparison with Fourth Nephi. The annual F.A.R.M.S. banquet, to be held at BYU on Saturday, October 17, will feature an address by Hugh Nibley. Brother Nibley will speak about some of his current research. The program will also include recognition of individuals who have given outstanding service to the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies and to the Book of Mormon research it sponsors. Members of the F.A.R.M.S. board of directors will report on on-going projects and work that has been completed during the last year and will present plans for future projects and activities.

Farms-Sponsored Team Will Examine Arabian Site

A team of researchers, sponsored jointly by BYU and F.A.R.M.S., will examine a likely site for Old World Bountiful, where Nephi's family built the boat that carried them to their promised land. Over the last few years, Warren and Michaela Aston have surveyed the coast of southern Arabia for possible sites for Bountiful. Their research has identified a site at Wadi Sayq as the most likely candidate, matching in great detail the criteria that the Astons have identified from the account in the Book of Mormon.

Stephen E. Robinson, chair of the Department of Ancient Scripture at BYU, has been named an Assistant Editor of a monograph series published by the Journal for the Study of the Pseudepigrapha. He also delivered a paper in June at an international symposium in Jerusalem on ''Jewish Leaders in the Land before 1970." The symposium was chaired by Mayor Teddy Kollek. Others who made presentations at the symposium included James Charlesworth, W. D. Davies, and David Flusser.
