At one point in his ministry, Isaiah was instructed by the Lord to remove his garment and shoes and walk "naked [like a slave, without an upper garment] and barefoot" among the people. Isaiah's action was to be a sign, for as Isaiah walked like a slave, even so would the Egyptians become slaves to the Assyrians (Isaiah 20:2-4). This prophetic symbolic action by Isaiah represented a prophetic curse that destruction and ruin would come upon the Egyptians.

Helaman 3:7-11 reports that Nephite dissenters began moving from the land of Zarahemla into the land northward where they began building with cement. "The people who went forth became exceedingly expert in the working of cement; therefore they did build houses of cement," as well as "all manner of their buildings" and many cities "both of wood and of cement." The Book of Mormon dates this significant technological advance to the year 46 B.C.

Michaela and Warren Aston of Queensland, Australia, have sent to F.A.R.M.S. a preliminary report on their third trip to the Arabian peninsula to search for Lehi's land Bountiful. Despite political tensions in the area, they accomplished more in the three weeks they spent there than on any previous trip. They completed their survey of the coastline and took numerous photographs.

A mammoth task is now underway: with added emphasis on Book of Mormon scholarship the past few years, it has become necessary to improve, update, and annotate the 1986 F.A.R.M.S. Bibliography of the Book of Mormon. Donald W. Parry, who will oversee this project, notes that during the past five years, several hundred students and scholars have realized the usefulness of this bibliography.

The fact that data on early civilization in Mesoamerica has been skimpy has held back attempts to shed light on the period of the Jaredites. Newly reported research confirms that the roots of better-known, later cultures like the Maya go back a very long time and thus that much of what is known about the later peoples applies to their predecessors also. The more such connections that are found, the more we will know about the Jaredite period.

Between the birth of Christ and the death of Herod there was a lunar eclipse. Attempts to date Christ's birth have involved trying to establish the date of this eclipse. For many years it has been believed that the eclipse occurred on March 13, 4 B.C., which would place Christ's birth in either 5 or 6 B.C.

In 1986 Roger R. Keller, a former Presbyterian minister, published his Reformed Christians and Mormon Christians: Let's Talk. The book lays a foundation for helping Protestants and Latter-day Saints discover the overlapping precepts of their convictions in Christ. Chapter 5 is on the Book of Mormon and the concept of scripture. The book is offered at a discount at this time through the generosity of Truman Madsen, a longtime member of the F.A.R.M.S. advisory board.

A new "Fireside Edition" of the Book of Mormon is now available through F.A.R.M.S. This edition contains the text of the Book of Mormon in seven paperback volumes, with lines in the wide margins that are suitable for taking brief notes and making cross-references. In addition, at the end of each volume is a short appendix dealing primarily with eyewitnesses to the Book of Mormon.
