Challenges And Prospects Of Multimedia Staging In The Educational Theatre: The Unizik Example, Tochukwu J. Okeke

International Review of Humanities Studies

At the turn of the century, theatre practice embraced digital technology as an aid towards the achievement of multifarious effects in the theatre. The problem of this study therefore is to examine the effectiveness of multimedia staging technique in an Educational theatre in Nigeria using the performance of Esiaba Irobi’s Colour of Rusting Gold at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Theatre as a case study. Through the participant observation approach of the qualitative research method, the study interrogates the challenges and problems of the new media employed in multimedia staging in a Nigerian Educational Theatre. Ecological Imperialism In Yvonne Owuor Dust Ngũgĩ Wa Thiong'o’S Petals Of Blood, Eguvwebere Adanma Anthonia

International Review of Humanities Studies

Modern African Literature grew out of the need for re-identification and reevaluation of the African cultural heritage. Despite that, colonialism and its legacies continue to have a powerful and lasting impact in Africa. Using two literary texts from East Africa, Kenya, reflecting post-colonial and neo-colonial eras, this study examines the validity of the continuation of Ecological Imperialism in Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's Petals of Blood (1977) and Owuor Yvonne Adhiambo's Dust (2013). An analytical appraisal of the texts reveals that the post/neocolonial nation-state, far from embodying the new hope of the masses, is a replica of the colonial master's political system …

This paper discusses the essential of Semar Power in the puppet play entitled Bathara Kala Tundhung-Surya Ndadari. The play Bathara Kala Tundhung-Surya Ndadari was taken into consideration in conducting this research because it is a unique play, namely the Ruwat play and the Mahabharata story play which were united through the experience of the presence of Semar characters in a puppet play by Ki Manteb Sudarsono. The main problem in this research is how the essence of Semar Power is formulated in Batara Kala Tundhung-Surya Ndadari. This study aims to formalize Semar's power as the holder of the superiority of …

The Cinematic Othering Of Sitting Bull In The Adaptation Of Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, Rachmat Nurcahyo, Dhita Hapsarani, Melani Budianta, Bayu Kristianto

International Review of Humanities Studies

The marginalization of particular groups or people as a result of the idea that one group or person is better than another is known as the "othering" process. This article discusses how a film adaptation of Dee Alexander Brown’s book on Native American history, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (BMHWK) performs this act of othering. First of all, it is done by negatively portraying the heroic figure in the book. Sitting Bull, a Teton Dakota Chief who united the Sioux tribes in North America, the Great Plains, in mid 19th century is reduced in the film …

Narrative Strategy And Theatrical Creativity In Pak Nasir's Sita Marriage Contest, Bimo Sinung Widagdo, Darmoko Darmoko

International Review of Humanities Studies

Shadow puppets are very popular in Southeast Asia. The foreign culture that is present in this area has a strong enough influence on the growth and existence of local culture. Stories were brought and spread by the Indians at the beginning of the Christian era as material developed through their local intelligence. Two geographical areas that are unique in Malay culture are important and deserve attention, namely Malaysia and Thailand. Kelantan Malay shadow puppets cannot be separated from the influences inherent in them, namely Java and Thailand. The plays that are shown revolve around Rama's struggle to get Sita, who …

Diaspora In Indonesia-China Relationship At The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Era, R. Tuty Nur Mutia Enoch Muas

International Review of Humanities Studies

Diaspora is a potential non-state actor as a driver of people-to-people connections between the country of origin and the country of residence. People-to-people connections are part of public diplomacy, increasing in importance with information and communication technology. Indonesia-China relations have existed for more than seven decades, experiencing dynamic ups and downs. Since the inauguration of the Strategic Partnership between Indonesia and China in 2005 and then in 2013, it has increased to become a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and bilateral and multilateral relations have tended to increase. Bilateral and multilateral relations have managed to grow. However, from the Indonesian side, there …

Germania Our Mother, Columbia Our Bride: Das Arkansas Echo In The First World War, Harrison Mitchell Jan 2023

Germania Our Mother, Columbia Our Bride: Das Arkansas Echo In The First World War, Harrison Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the tone and content that appeared in the German-language Arkansas newspaper, Das Arkansas Echo, during the First World War. The newspaper’s content between the American neutrality period (1914-1917) was compared to the American war period (1917-1918) to see how it changed as political situations changed and anti-German sentiment grew. Additionally, the actions of the Echo’s editorial staff outside of the newspaper were explored within the context of their published content. This thesis found that both periods contrasted sharply with each other. The newspaper expressed support for the Central Powers and the actions of Germany in the American …

A Captive’S Subjectivity, Rebeca J. Blemur Jan 2023

A Captive’S Subjectivity, Rebeca J. Blemur

Theses and Dissertations

The project discusses the effects of Haiti’s colonization as the space transitions from Hispaniola to Saint-Domingue and later to the free state of Haiti. This is done by studying the concept of the right to conquest and the absurdities that exist around the first appearances of international law. The project focuses on the pre-revolutionary period starting around the 1750s, the revolutionary period that began in the 1790s, the French oligarchical class’s attempt for social equality, and the war for ultimate colonial conquest between the French, Spanish, and British. The project will display how legally objectifying a human being manifests subjects …

A Universe Of Mirrors: The Mirror Metaphor In Ibn ʿArabī’S Thought In Relation To Ontology, Knowledge, And Perfection, Basma Eletreby Jan 2023

A Universe Of Mirrors: The Mirror Metaphor In Ibn ʿArabī’S Thought In Relation To Ontology, Knowledge, And Perfection, Basma Eletreby

Theses and Dissertations

The mirror metaphor is ubiquitous in sufi texts. It operates uniquely in Ibn ʿArabī’s thought and writings as a representation of his conception of the cosmos. Being, knowledge, and perfection are among the seminal themes of al-Shaykh al-Akbar’s thought, and the mirror metaphor is employed in revealing their reality in his writings. As opposed to Unity of Being, a term that Ibn ʿArabī does not employ, the mirror embodies the pillars of Ibn ʿArabī’s conception of Being through representing the quintessential huwa lā huwa, the configuration of oneness and manyness, and most importantly, the definition of the relation between God …

Students’ And Teachers’ Perceptions Of Using Memes In Esl Classrooms, Fadwa Youssef Jan 2023

Students’ And Teachers’ Perceptions Of Using Memes In Esl Classrooms, Fadwa Youssef

Theses and Dissertations

Using humor in the language classroom has proven to be an effective pedagogical teaching tool that builds rapport between students and teachers. It also reduces anxiety and affective filter as well as increases students’ performance and willingness to communicate in class using their L2 (Azizinezhad & Hashemi, 2011; Banks, 2014; Soares, 2015). Previous studies used humor broadly starting from humorous comments in class to funny TV shows, movies, or songs. Some studies went further using funny memes in class and fewer studies went all the way making students create memes as part of their class requirements (Purnama, 2017). Results of …

Filling The Vacant Space: A Close Reading Of Kant’S Dialectic Of Pure Practical Reason, Mae Ashraf Ali Saafan Jan 2023

Filling The Vacant Space: A Close Reading Of Kant’S Dialectic Of Pure Practical Reason, Mae Ashraf Ali Saafan

Theses and Dissertations

The main aim of this thesis is to explore Kant’s central notion of rational belief. Kant’s account of rational belief could be viewed as the ground on which rational moral agents assent to propositions that enable them to avoid any practical incoherence as they engage in their moral duty.

The paper will offer a close reading of the dialectic of pure practical reason, particularly the doctrine of the postulates of practical reason. In this doctrine, Kant argues that although there is no theoretical proof for or against freedom, God, and the immortality of the soul, rational moral agents ought to …

Being Multicultural In The Workplace, Fiorella Morales Jan 2023

Being Multicultural In The Workplace, Fiorella Morales

Dissertations

As the workforce becomes increasingly diverse and organizations elevate their efforts to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), it is critical to engage in a deeper investigation of the experiences of multicultural individuals at work. In this qualitative study, nine multicultural individuals were interviewed using a sociological lens to gain their perspective on the relationship between their identity and their work experiences. The primary research questions that guided this study were: (a) how do multicultural individuals influence the workplace? In turn, (b) how do their workplace experiences affect their identity and sense of self? Data was coded and …

Jussi Björling Museum Update, Voxna And Strömsbruk, Sue Flaster

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Largely due to the ongoing Covid pandemic and the usual Swedish summer-vacation period, there is nothing new to report about the fate of the Museum, as well as no news about when Borlänge Kommun plans to empty the current Museum building. As of this writing, the municipal government is still planning to relocate the Jussi Björling Museum to space in the Borlänge library. Although the Museum remains officially closed, it is possible to visit by appointment. Efforts continue to find appropriate space in Stockholm as well as to work with Borlänge Kommun to insure the best possible arrangement for this …

Remembering Sarah Duvall, Norm Krasne

Newsletter of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

After suffering a catastrophic stroke last summer, one of our fellow JBSers, my partner Sarah Duvall, passed away on August 15th. Compared to most in our Society, she was a relative newcomer to opera and to Jussi’s heavenly tenor. As her exposure to the art form grew, she came to prefer more contemporary operatic works to the more traditional classics, but she recognized superior singing when she heard it. Portland (OR) Opera was our home base and over a decade we became more involved with the Company and made many friends among its supporters and staff. Sarah was a volunteer …

According to the author, this is the first biographical study in English of the world-renowned Brazilian soprano, Bidú Sayão, who had a storied career in opera during the l930s, 1940s, and1950s. Of considerable interest to members of the Jussi Björling Societies, this study emphasizes her collaboration with Jussi in major Metropolitan Opera productions...notably Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette (1947)and Puccini’s La bohème (especially the 1948 performance). Blessed with a haunting lyric soprano voice, she specialized in bel canto roles that took her to the major operatic houses of the world and left an indelible impression on critics and audiences alike. Performing Widowhood On The Early Modern English Stage, Asuka Kimura Jan 2023

Performing Widowhood On The Early Modern English Stage, Asuka Kimura

Late Tudor and Stuart Drama

The deaths of husbands radically changed women's lives in the early modern period. While losing male protection, widows acquired rare opportunities for social and economic independence. Placed between death and life, female submissiveness and male audacity, chastity and sexual awareness, or tragedy and comedy, widows were highly problematic in early modern patriarchal society. They were also popular figures in the theater, arousing both male desire and anxiety. How did Shakespeare and his contemporaries represent them on the stage? What kind of costume, props, and gestures were employed? What influence did actors, spectators, and play-space have? This book offers a fresh …

Canon Fanfiction: Reading, Writing, And Teaching With Adaptations Of Premodern And Early Modern Literature, Christine Schott Jan 2023

Canon Fanfiction: Reading, Writing, And Teaching With Adaptations Of Premodern And Early Modern Literature, Christine Schott

Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture

For most of Western history, literary value came from retelling and reworking the literature of the past. This reinvention of source material is not unlike the process of writing fanfiction, a genre that has exploded in popularity among young adults in the internet age. It also bears a resemblance the work of literary scholars, who seek to respond, sometimes radically, to the difficult or problematic elements in texts they study. In a climate of increasing indifference toward literature and scholarship, creative writing provides novelists and students alike a powerful way to engage with literature of the past and confront the …

Capturing Interiority, Paramita Atmodiwirjo, Yandi Andri Yatmo

They demonstrate how the idea of interiority could be captured through everyday images, the presence of objects in space, locality narratives, and spatial arrangements of inhabited space.

Theory Follows Photography: The Evolving Gaze Of Denise Scott Brown, Pablo Meninato Jan 2023

Theory Follows Photography: The Evolving Gaze Of Denise Scott Brown, Pablo Meninato

Interiority

Throughout history, architects have communicated their ideas through writing, drawing, model-making, speculation, and built work. Photography, which appeared in architecture books at the beginning of the 20th century, was mostly considered to be ancillary to the written word. A recent exhibition of photographs by Denise Scott Brown at Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia during summer 2021 demonstrates the possibility of another creative and intellectual path for the medium. Photography simultaneously serves as a precedent and catalyst for architectural and urban thinking and theory. This article aims to examine the relationship and continuity between Scott Brown's photographs and …

To Find A Seat: Tracing The Ideoscape Of Seats In The Pathars’ Lifeworld In Penang, Sanjeh Kumar Raman, Safial Aqbar Zakaria

Interiority

This article examines the roles taken by seats in the buildings that form the lifeworld of Pathars—traditional Tamil goldsmiths—as an ideoscape following their migration to Penang during the British colonial period in the 19th century. This study used a phenomenological ethnography method to bring Pathars’ lived experiences with their physical environment to the forefront, highlighting the subjectiveness of architecture that shapes their lifeworld. The ideoscape of seats is analysed in themes to examine the power and politics of seats in the Pathars’ lifeworlds, including present-day migrant workers. To find a seat is a metaphor that elicits discussion on Pathars’ existential …

Spatial Dialogues Between Exhibited Interiors And Cultural Exteriors: How Local Museums Connect To The Community, Nuttinee Karnchanaporn, Chanida Lumthaweepaisal Jan 2023

Spatial Dialogues Between Exhibited Interiors And Cultural Exteriors: How Local Museums Connect To The Community, Nuttinee Karnchanaporn, Chanida Lumthaweepaisal

Interiority

Local museums can no longer simply wait for visitors to come and see their exhibited interiors. They are tasked with community engagement and cultural continuity. They must remain relevant to their communities, but how? Recently, local museums, especially those promoting local history, have struggled to relate to rapidly changing and diverse communities. To ensure museums are community-centred spaces, this research suggests that their spatial components need rethinking. While exhibitions in local museums should be designed through a collaboration and co-creation process between museum staff and locals, semi-outdoor and exterior spaces could be organised to host community gatherings, cultural events, and …

Interiority

This study aims to find and define interiority as an initiative to preserve culture and traditions in Sade Village, Lombok Island, a tourist area in Indonesia. This study adopted qualitative research with the case study method, recording several data sources through field observation, literature studies, archives, and in-depth interviews with community leaders. This study identifies the typology of areas that create psychological, form-based, atmospheric, and programmatic interiority (Teston, 2020) in various configurations. This study found the types of interiorities in Sade Village that contribute to the corridor’s uniqueness, visitors’ feeling of insideness, and the area’s maintenance. Five categories of interiority, …
