Storytelling In Modernist Fiction: A “Method Of Presence”, Laura Malhotra Feb 2023

Storytelling In Modernist Fiction: A “Method Of Presence”, Laura Malhotra

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation explores the relationship between narrative modes in cinema and literature and adopts the lineage laid out by Lukács that connects the oral tradition and epic poetry to the novel. I attach art cinema to this lineage and seek to justify its position as an equally significant medium representative of the age in which it is produced. This study aims to correct one established view of film, put forth by the Frankfurt School, of its low value as an art form and as a site of meaning. I compare the birth of literary modernism in Britain to the emergence …

An Analytical And Comparative Study: Design Of Outdoor Shading Device Based On Fractal Geometry Strategies To Increase Thermal Comfort, Dalia Mohamed Ezzat

Journal of Art, Design and Music

Despite growing design demand, there has been little research on the design of shading devices for the outdoor environment. Heat-related illnesses are becoming a more pressing issue as temperatures rise due to climate change. Seeking shade is one effective way for humans to protect themselves. Blocking sun radiation is the main goal of shading. One of the most effective cooling strategies, found in nature, is the tree fractal strategy used to optimize shading. Similarly, Girih patterns are fractal in geometry. The purpose of this paper is to design a shading device based on the Girih fractal geometry inspired by tree …

Is There Room For More?: Considering The Need For A Decoloniality Community Psychology Core Competency, Jesica S. Fernández, Janelle M. Silva Jan 2023

Is There Room For More?: Considering The Need For A Decoloniality Community Psychology Core Competency, Jesica S. Fernández, Janelle M. Silva

Ethnic Studies

From a decolonizing standpoint, as proposed by Cruz and Sonn (2011), the current community psychology competencies seem insufficient because these often leave power structures intact. Consequently, we propose a decolonizing, decolonial and anti-colonial competency in community psychology practice to facilitate the practitioner’s process toward decoloniality, specifically decolonizing language, discourses, relationships and research processes with communities. A decolonial competency in community psychology practice is characterized by an iterative process of critical ethical reflexivity that aims to de-link community psychology practice from hegemonic Western Eurocentric perspectives in order to foster and center community voice, knowledge and power. Through an autoethnographic methodology we …

In the theological chapter, the Tower of Babel narrative in Genesis 11 and the Pentecost narrative in Acts 2 serve as interpretive …

This paper analyses Goosebumps (2015) and Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween (2018), which are the movie adaptations of R.L Stine’s horror book series. It aims to see the possibility of the female heroines and male heroes to defy conventional gender stereotypes and determine the female heroines’ agency as horror movies tend to objectify the female characters. This paper uses the Cult of True Womanhood (Welter, 1966), Male Gender Role Identity (Pleck, 1981) and representation theory (Hall, 1997) to analyse the dialogues and interaction of the …

A Study Of The Concept Of Heterotopian Space In The Dutch Cemetery At The Bogor Botanical Garden, Nur Muhammad Arief Kurniawan, Irmawati Marwoto

International Review of Humanities Studies

A cemetery is a land that is used as a place for burial of bodies. However, despite its obvious function, in European Christian culture which lasted for centuries, the view of the true cemetery was always changing, so that the function of the cemetery was often mixed with other completely unrelated functions of space. This phenomenon is highlighted by Foucault in his theory of heterotopia space (1967). In this regard, this study intends to look at other spaces based on the phenomena found in the Dutch Cemetery at the Bogor Botanical Garden. This cemetery is interesting to study using Foucault's …

Classical theatre marketing has been a phenomenon since the emergence of Greek theatre. This involved various means of selling theatre performances. Although marketing principles in theatre patronage are key in selling performances to a prospective audience, there is a dearth of research on it locally. Also, as observed, some theatre companies do not utilise these marketing principles in marketing their performances. Thus, they end up running at a loss and not satisfying the targeted audience members. To investigate this problem, this paper seeks to trace the evolution of theatre marketing from Ancient Greek to the present day. It also explores …

However, this study intends to interrogate gender relations in terms of the way cultural and development policies are currently regulating the balance of power between men and women in a rapidly mutating African society. Through a reading of select Nigerian films, the paper examines how Nollywood films construct the heterogeneous roles performed by men …
