Teaching Abortion As A Historical Construct: The Case Of Early Twentieth-Century Brazil And Beyond, Cassia Roth Apr 2023

Teaching Abortion As A Historical Construct: The Case Of Early Twentieth-Century Brazil And Beyond, Cassia Roth

Feminist Pedagogy

Using open-access primary sources available online, this activity teaches abortion as an unstable category through a specific case study, early twentieth-century Brazil. The one-week module, although specific to one geographic region and chronological period, can serve as a lesson plan for undergraduate history courses, for disciplines that use genealogy methods, and for interdisciplinary courses. The lesson plan helps undergraduates think critically about what we think we know about abortion, and how our current understandings are not fixed but rather contingent on the society in which we live and on who is practicing abortion. Changing understandings of what constitutes an abortion …

“How Did I Not Know Any Of This?” Teaching Reproductive Justice In An Abortion Desert, Lena R. Hann Apr 2023

“How Did I Not Know Any Of This?” Teaching Reproductive Justice In An Abortion Desert, Lena R. Hann

Feminist Pedagogy

Reproductive justice is often used interchangeably with reproductive rights and reproductive health, overshadowing the importance of each movement’s contributions to understanding bodily autonomy. I am a former abortion care worker, now faculty at a Lutheran liberal arts college in an abortion desert. Antiabortion events on campus motivated students to request evidence-based education about reproductive issues, leading me to develop an immersive reproductive justice course. Reproductive justice is a framework that analyzes how systems of power prevent equitable access to and enjoyment of rights and health. The course examined how multifaceted oppressions shape reproductive self-determination and included content about abortion, adoption, …

Tú Dices “Plátano” Y Yo Digo “Mofongo”: Una Representación De La Normalización Del Biculturalismo En Alma’S Way, Jordan Carter

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Alma’s Way, a bilingual children’s animated television program from Fred Rogers Productions about a six year old Puerto Rican girl living in the Bronx of New York City with her family, premiered on PBS Kids in October 2021. Through the use of discourse analysis, this academic paper explores characters’ use of linguistic and cultural practices. Discourse analysis focuses on the main character, Alma, as well as her friends, her immediate family (Junior, Mami, Papi), and her mother’s side of the family (Abuelo, Tía Gloria, Uncle Nestor, Cousin Eddie). The analysis of 12 episodes chosen at random, a total of …

Trending En Tiktok: El Cambio De Código Como Estrategia Discursiva; Trending On Tiktok: Code-Switching As A Discursive Strategy, Jessica Vrioni

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

Ordering Gospel Textuality In The Second Century, Jeremiah Coogan, Jacob A. Rodriguez Apr 2023

Ordering Gospel Textuality In The Second Century, Jeremiah Coogan, Jacob A. Rodriguez

Jesuit School of Theology

This article interrogates how several second-century figures ordered a pluriform Gospel corpus. Focusing on approaches to Gospel plurality visible in the Epistula apostolorum, Tatian the Syrian, Irenaeus of Lyons, and Ammonius of Alexandria, we argue that a number of Christian readers—across the Roman Mediterranean, from Alexandria to Gaul and from Syria to Rome—employed similar approaches. Drawing on evidence for second-century reading practices, we demonstrate continuities in both textual practices and conceptual frameworks that illuminate Gospel reading and writing. These figures engaged Gospels in multiple dimensions—horizontal juxtaposition of parallel material and vertical coordination of narrative sequence—in order to map relationships between …

The War On Gender Equality: A Comparative Study Between Feminism And Anti-Feminism In South Korea And The United States, Ashley Dipenti Apr 2023

The War On Gender Equality: A Comparative Study Between Feminism And Anti-Feminism In South Korea And The United States, Ashley Dipenti

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Since the time of Confucianism and the development of patriarchal systems in South Korea, there have been distinct differences between male and female experiences and roles in various aspects of Korean life. The gendered history of South Korea has led to a gap between the two genders that persists today in important areas of Korean society, such as education and social life. As both genders struggle for equality and representation, both sides argue that they are being discriminated against. This struggle has led to two major groups being formed in South Korea (hereafter Korea): feminists and anti-feminists. The following review …

The Temporal Asymmetry Of Influence Is Not Statistical, Emily Adlam Apr 2023

The Temporal Asymmetry Of Influence Is Not Statistical, Emily Adlam

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We argue that the temporal asymmetry of influence is not merely the result of thermodynamics: it is a consequence of the fact that modal structure of the universe must admit only processes which cannot give rise to contradictions. We appeal to the process matrix formalism developed in the field of quantum foundations to characterise processes which are compatible with local free will whilst ruling out contradictions, and argue that this gives rise to ‘consistent chaining’ requirements that explain the temporal asymmetry of influence. We compare this view to the perspectival account of causation advocated by Price and Ramsey.

The Nature And Role Of Phenomenology In Hegel And Heidegger, Gabriel W. Connor Apr 2023

The Nature And Role Of Phenomenology In Hegel And Heidegger, Gabriel W. Connor

LSU Master's Theses

In this work I compare Hegel and Heidegger’s conception of phenomenology and its role in their thinking. Though these two thinkers are not often examined from this angle, and though there is controversy surrounding just how phenomenological each thinker might actually be, an examination of the two thinkers in this regard serves to identify interesting connections between Hegel and Heidegger while also raising questions about phenomenology in general. In short, I seek to establish that phenomenology in both Hegel and Heidegger is not adequately understood unless it is placed in the context of each thinker’s conception of human freedom along …

Expand And Compare The Use Of Different Digital Fashion Technologies In Simulation Three-Dimensional Structured Designs, Fatimah Hakeem Apr 2023

Expand And Compare The Use Of Different Digital Fashion Technologies In Simulation Three-Dimensional Structured Designs, Fatimah Hakeem

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation research determined the ability of three-dimensional (3D) simulation technology (CLO3DTM and OptiTexTM software) to develop digital prototypes of structured apparel designs using different creative pattern-cutting techniques. The project’s focus was to compare the similarities between physical and virtual prototypes and evaluate differences in performance between the two software programs using fit and appearance criteria. The participants’ evaluations were analyzed with their performance on the Apparel Spatial Visualization Test (ASVT) to determine whether there was a correlation between the level of performance on the ASVT and evaluation of the technologies. It was predicted that participants with higher …

Blues Big Revenge, Fidel E. Perez Pujols Apr 2023

Love Me, Elisha Mendoza Apr 2023

Love Me, Elisha Mendoza

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"Like my other poems, this piece was written on the spot. As for the inspiration and meaning behind my piece, I think a lot and feel strongly about love. I've never experienced romance or been in a relationship, so I tend to be in my head quite a bit and feel lonely from time to time. It makes me wonder whether or not I have a soulmate, and if that soulmate is myself. Self-love comes before loving another person, as they say."

I Think I'Ve Processed It But, Amber M. Hockaday Apr 2023

I Think I'Ve Processed It But, Amber M. Hockaday

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"I was sexually assaulted March 27th, 2021, around 3 am. I pretended like it was something I wanted, that maybe I wasn’t vocal enough in expressing that I didn’t want it, and maybe I acted like I enjoyed it, and that sent a mixed message. I didn’t want to tell anyone because I was afraid that I would be blamed. I had been in fight-or-flight mode for months without realizing it. I remember all the details of that night, but it no longer consumes me with overwhelming fear, it gets better, and this poem is proof of that."

A Doctors Visit, Italia P. Lewis Apr 2023

A Doctors Visit, Italia P. Lewis

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"My poem follows the story of a woman's doctor's visit. It is meant to convey what women face in going to the doctor, highlighting how women's health is often ignored or pushed off as a nonissue. The inspiration for this poem came from a women's health class I took last semester, in which we read different passages about the disparities women face while trying to get medical help. From being gaslighted, ignored, and shamed for being unhealthy, my poem is meant to highlight each and every one of those issues."

El Universo / The Universe, Cora J. Padilla Castillo Apr 2023

El Universo / The Universe, Cora J. Padilla Castillo

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"In the universe you find things you want to see but at the same time you don’t. When in love you are vulnerable to the feelings that person can transmit to you. This poem is about a love wanting to be noticed for who they are. This individual wants the lover or person of interest to walk into their eyes and see their heart as well to feel their colors. In a way this individual struggles to be seen and prompts the question if they have seen them yet. Within the poem I wanted to also depict the value that …
