Fostered Fiction, Jenna M. Handal Miss Apr 2023

Fostered Fiction, Jenna M. Handal Miss

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"'Fostered Fiction' is about willful ignorance and the desire to create a false image, in order to maintain an impossible relationship. Despite no regret and the knowledge of its destructive nature and doomed fate, good moments are still remembered, and feelings of guilt linger."

Consumerism, Rosselyn Pérez Apr 2023

Consumerism, Rosselyn Pérez

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"'Consumerism' was inspired by the clouding uncertainty that it brings upon our society. The piece represents the search for who is guilty of the damage caused by consumerism and questions their unwillingness to fix it.

The Mercurial Minds Of Medicine: A Poetry Collection, Rueida Ali Apr 2023

The Mercurial Minds Of Medicine: A Poetry Collection, Rueida Ali

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"I decided to compose a poetry collection that allows one to delve into the complex thoughts of three important roles in medicine; all the poems focus on the double consciousness of either the caregiver, the doctor or the patient. The entire collection is based on emulating the narrative of Frances Burney’s 'Mastectomy,' reimagined in three different perspectives, while also emulating the forms and context of Hélène Cixous’ 'Laugh of the Medusa' and Amy Haddad’s 'Stereotactic Biopsy,' with the purpose of shedding light on a few of the many perspectives in the operation of a mastectomy."

Hands Of Influence, Nicholas Waguespack Apr 2023

Hands Of Influence, Nicholas Waguespack

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"A trace monotype layered over a regular monotype, this print explores the disappearing influence that my parents have on my life. Growing up their ideas and ideologies were forced upon me and this piece explores how I am trying to break free from these beliefs and ideas."

Minute Details, Isha H. Patel Apr 2023

Minute Details, Isha H. Patel

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"I drew this piece during a time when I was suffering depression, when all I wanted for was the pain and sadness to end. I painted this subconsciously not realizing at the time what it meant, I simply just did it. Later I realized that having gotten through my senior year, getting to participate in a medical assistant course, to do something that I want to do, something I love, I found light to keep going. That was my light in the darkness."

A Seasonal Sonnet, Antonio Miguel Escorzon Apr 2023

A Seasonal Sonnet, Antonio Miguel Escorzon

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"I created 'A Seasonal Sonnet' because of an assignment for my high school senior year British Literature where students had to formulate an original sonnet. I was ecstatic with the opportunity to create one, although I knew the difficulties in writing in the particular iambic pentameter. I started with seasons because I sought to give year-round aspects a substantial recognition. I kept the piece in a separate document when I graduated high school and became a student at NSU. When I heard about Digressions, I thought about giving myself a try in submitting my own work."

Rothstein, Richard, Sophia Maier Garcia Apr 2023

Rothstein, Richard, Sophia Maier Garcia

Bronx Jewish History Project

Richard Rothstein, born in 1942, was born in Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan, and lived on Webster Avenue with his parents who initially moved to the Bronx from Manhattan. Rothstein’s mother was a Hungarian immigrant, and he spoke Hungarian at home until the age of eight. The family later moved to Harrison Avenue, where he remembers having many Italian and Irish neighbors but very few Jewish ones. However, as Rothstein’s family was not religious, their lack of Jewish neighbors was not a bother. Rothstein remembers being bullied as a kid by some of his Irish and Italian peers and recalls …

A Requiem For Those Who Rest Their Wings, Adit R. Selvaraj Apr 2023

A Requiem For Those Who Rest Their Wings, Adit R. Selvaraj

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"'A Requiem For Those Who Rest Their Wings' is a piece that emphasizes how nerve-wracking it is to leave your safe space and pursue your dreams. The author behind this piece has many dreams that require them to face their anxiety and present themselves to the world. The piece was especially inspired by the author's enjoyment of Japanese music, particularly the song 'Little Bird' by Chiaki Ishikawa."

Purple Heart, Marieann C. Raguso Apr 2023

Purple Heart, Marieann C. Raguso

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"As a combat veteran, I received a purple heart after my MRAP, armored truck, was blown up by an improvised explosive device (IED). It made me reflect on those who have come before me, and I wondered, how many women have a Purple Heart? The answer was less than 100 women have a Purple Heart, according to the Military Order of the Purple Heart in 2017. Having a Purple Heart is still a cauldron of mixed feelings for me, and I felt the urge to write about it."

Hysteria, Fidel E. Perez Pujols Apr 2023

Hysteria, Fidel E. Perez Pujols

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"In my art, I like to capture moments where I feel an overwhelming amount of a particular emotion. Different shapes and colors allow me to express different ideas."

Don't Take My Mask, Nicholas Waguespack Apr 2023

Don't Take My Mask, Nicholas Waguespack

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"Featuring a traditional Mardi Gras mask, this Lino cut explores the societal pressure I feel to reveal and expose myself to the world and the comfort I feel in some ways by being hidden away. With today’s society so focused on content creation and posting, I find myself conflicted with the idea of exposing myself for notoriety online but also wanting to keep my life very much private."

Loss Of Sight, Iksita C. Nallapaneni Apr 2023

Loss Of Sight, Iksita C. Nallapaneni

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"This piece was created as I was exiting a very distressing time in my life. I had recently begun therapy and was using art to express myself. I had finally been experiencing clarity as opposed to the 'loss of sight' and clouded judgement, and painted this as a way to move past this stage in my life."

There's Fresh Water In Afghanistan, Marieann C. Raguso Apr 2023

There's Fresh Water In Afghanistan, Marieann C. Raguso

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"This piece outlines the reality of war and my experience as I saw it. Lives are always at risk of ending in the blink of an eye. The problem is not enough people are opening their eyes to see the world around them. We are trained to be brutal and dehumanize our enemies in the military, but what happens when the enemy is just like us?"

Koonja's Death From Neville's Perspective, Michelle L. Gorodisky Apr 2023

Koonja's Death From Neville's Perspective, Michelle L. Gorodisky

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

In Grace Cho's memoir Tastes Like War, she states that her brother, Neville, was the one who had found her mother when she died. This scene will take place under Neville’s point of view, because his thoughts about their family’s situation are not examined very thoroughly throughout the memoir. Considering Cho and Neville’s starkly contrasting opinions about their family experiences, I thought it would be interesting to try reading this scene from Neville’s perspective."

Awake 12:48 Am, Meghana S. Jagarlamudi Apr 2023

Awake 12:48 Am, Meghana S. Jagarlamudi

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"'Awake 12:48 AM' was written during one of my sleepless nights. All of the memories from growing up as a second-generation South Asian kid came together to create a moment of self-realization about the pressure we face, not just beauty. When I first wrote it, the repetition of 'even if' showed my frustration of society telling us to find ourselves worthy even though it secretly favored another. Today, 'even if' has a different meaning to me; it should be a source of our determination despite any limits we face."

Flowers In The Snow, Rueida Ali Apr 2023

Flowers In The Snow, Rueida Ali

Digressions: Literary & Art Journal

"This disoriented poem serves as a poetic memoir of the fiasco that was my first few months in college. While each stanza explores a different experience or feeling, there is a consistent delirious tone throughout the poem. I watched as all aspects of my health deteriorated and felt myself reach sheer madness. In each stanza, I explore the highlights of my first semester, visiting sacrifices I never imagined myself to make because of the failures that persisted in haunting me."

Literature Through The Looking Glass: How Fan Fiction Can Save English, Jacob C. Quinn Apr 2023

Literature Through The Looking Glass: How Fan Fiction Can Save English, Jacob C. Quinn

Honors College Theses

English departments face a crisis of student disinterest. Scholars are struggling to sell the study of literature as practically useful in an increasingly STEM-dominated world. The literary realm of fan fiction, which can serve as a guiding star, demonstrates how a community of readers and writers can reach for ideals of democracy and creativity that acknowledge the inherent worth of studying literature while also examining how such study can help students thrive in a world threatened by censorship and authoritarianism. This is a prescription for a total shift in philosophy for the academic study of literature. Such study has been …

Composing The Book Of Jeremiah: Relocating The Oracles Against The Nations In The Masoretic Text, Brenna C. Salverson Apr 2023

Composing The Book Of Jeremiah: Relocating The Oracles Against The Nations In The Masoretic Text, Brenna C. Salverson

Honors College Theses

The thesis conducts a textual critical analysis of the Book of Jeremiah’s placement of the oracles against the nations in the Masoretic Text and Septuagint. The following questions will be explored: 1) are the oracles against the nations a late addition to Jeremiah? 2) does the Masoretic Text relocate the oracles against the nations? and 3) do keywords and phrases that occur in the oracles against the nations appear in the content preceding and following the oracles in the Masoretic Text and Septuagint? Implications of the questions include the radical scribal decision to rearrange the Book of Jeremiah and the …

The Possibility Of Relationships With Others, Joshua Severud Apr 2023

The Possibility Of Relationships With Others, Joshua Severud

LSU Master's Theses

Levinas offers a rich philosophical insight into the kind of responsibility and ethics that we must have for the Other. This involves a certain conception of what it means to be hospitable which turns out to be impossible. In order to talk about how this impossible relationship can occur, I use Heidegger’s description of the existential Being-with structure and Derrida’s conception of the event in order to make sense of how this Levinasian relationship can possibly exist in spite of—or thanks to—its impossibility.

Emily Somebody: A Chamber Opera In Three Acts, Rodrigo Afonso Salles Camargo Apr 2023

Emily Somebody: A Chamber Opera In Three Acts, Rodrigo Afonso Salles Camargo

LSU Master's Theses

Emily Somebody is a chamber opera in three acts that tells the story of the friendship between the American poet Emily Dickinson and the man that would become her first editor, Mr. Thomas Higginson. This story, for me, is ultimately about a poet (or an artist) in the process of finding not only her own voice but also discovering what poetry and art mean to her, in the most genuine way, and standing up for these beliefs and values. All the lyrics used in this work are from Emily Dickinson’s poems and letters exchanged between her and Mr. Thomas Higginson.

A Study Of Max Reger's Four Sonatas For Solo Violin, Op. 42, No. 1: Analyzing Musical Structure And Exploring Performance Approaches, Hayoung Cho Apr 2023

A Study Of Max Reger's Four Sonatas For Solo Violin, Op. 42, No. 1: Analyzing Musical Structure And Exploring Performance Approaches, Hayoung Cho

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines four sonatas for solo violin op.42, no.1 by Max Reger, a composer relatively unknown in the modern era despite his significant contributions to the violin repertoire. Reger's lack of popularity as a composer for the violin and the infrequency of his solo violin sonatas' performance and recording are the main reasons for this study. The research is based on a comprehensive analysis of Reger's musical language and violin works focusing on his use of polyphonic textures, rhythmic and melodic phrasing, and ornamentation. By examining Reger's compositional techniques, this study aims to shed light on his unique approach …

Gaining Insights Into Signed Music Through Performers, Pamela E. Witcher, Jody Cripps, Hodan Youssouf Apr 2023

Gaining Insights Into Signed Music Through Performers, Pamela E. Witcher, Jody Cripps, Hodan Youssouf

Society for American Sign Language Journal

Signed music is best described as an inter-performative art form that combines lyrical and non-lyrical musical performances and is deeply rooted in the culture of deaf people who communicate through signed language (J. H. Cripps & Lyonblum, 2017; J. H. Cripps et al., in press [a]). The key investigative component for this article includes outlining the experiences that three Canadian performers had about their signed music creativity during a plenary at the Partition/Ensemble 2020 Conference held by the Canadian Association for Theatre Research in Montreal, Quebec. The panelists responded to two questions that they developed for themselves: What inspired us …
