Aesthetic Theory In Performance: A Comparative Study On Aristotle's Catharsis And Bharata Mundi's Rasa And Their Applications For Modern Theatre Practices, Sierra Tumbleson Apr 2023

Aesthetic Theory In Performance: A Comparative Study On Aristotle's Catharsis And Bharata Mundi's Rasa And Their Applications For Modern Theatre Practices, Sierra Tumbleson

Celebration of Research

As a storytelling species, theatre offers a powerful tool to explore our human nature. Theatre influences us. It affects our brains, especially our emotions. The key to discovering what happens to us while we watch theatre can be analyzed through aesthetic theories—two in particular. One popular theory derives from ancient Greece; the other from ancient India. Ancient Greece provides us with Aristotle and his theory of catharsis while ancient India gives us Bharata Mundi and his theory of rasa. Catharsis and rasa are aesthetic theories that seek to validate or measure the emotional reaction towards a work of art that …

"Silent Sky:" The Scene Design Process, Jack Macgregor Apr 2023

"Silent Sky:" The Scene Design Process, Jack Macgregor

Celebration of Research

Scene design is a crucial part of a successful production: the work shown provides clues to a play’s location, time period, mood, and many other facets prior to actors telling the story. In this past winter’s production of Silent Sky, I had the opportunity to learn and experience the design process from start to finish. Various steps of the process included image research, reading the script (more than once), sketching out construction plans, collaborating with the director and other designers, creating digital and physical models of the set, and much more. Through this, I was able to learn the successes …

Dramaturgy For The Theatre Production "Harvey", Marissa Leraas Apr 2023

Dramaturgy For The Theatre Production "Harvey", Marissa Leraas

Celebration of Research

For the past few weeks, I have had the absolute privilege of being Dramaturg for Northwestern College’s upcoming production of Harvey, under the direction of Ethan Koerner. This research delves into the 1940s, what life might have been like as far as psychology and mental health is concerned, as well as the folklore that is laced throughout the play itself, with little tidbits about the inspiring playwright and the work of a dramaturg. I hope you find something new from this information and that it helps you further enjoy our production of “Harvey” when you come see it in …

The Shepherd's Bible: A Novel, Shane R. De Vries Apr 2023

The Shepherd's Bible: A Novel, Shane R. De Vries

Celebration of Research

The world is imagined and explored simultaneously in The Shepherd’s Bible. As a fantastical imagining of adventure and curiosity, this novel begins with a warning and ends with a question: Beware, what will you find? Or in some cases, what will find you? This project offers snippets of what the full novel does: it creates an entry point into the inspiration of this text, provides examples of poetry, and gives eye-witness accounts of some of the characters found within the pages the much larger novel. Somewhere in the “Dreamscape” that is this project, readers will discover the lives of three …

Transubstantiation And Physics: Validity In Science Vs. Validity In Religion, Martha Stein, Emily Grace Apr 2023

Transubstantiation And Physics: Validity In Science Vs. Validity In Religion, Martha Stein, Emily Grace

Celebration of Research

Catholics believe Transubstantiation is the process of converting bread and wine into Jesus’ body and blood. There are no physical signs of change, but the substance changes. From a scientific perspective, there is no application of heat or light and no physical sign of change, therefore there is no change. Physics as we understand at an undergraduate level assumes Earth is a closed system. This assumption no longer applies if there can be substance change without physical modification from an energy source. I refuse to believe that science and religion are unrelated entities, yet I accept that this unexplainable phenomenon …

The Mud And Water: The Impact Of The Great War On A Soldier In The Trenches, Piper Williams Apr 2023

The Mud And Water: The Impact Of The Great War On A Soldier In The Trenches, Piper Williams

Celebration of Research

There is nothing clean, comforting, easy, or organized about war. Even in its temporary conclusions, the prolonged pauses between the onslaught of shellfire and monotonous marching, are found trauma and maddening unrest. Those that survive its terrors are equalized, left to relive its ceaseless barrage of indiscriminating, violent introspection; death the only true consolation.

Directly inspired by Henri Barbusses’ Le Feu, this art work explores the post-war struggle of an American soldier of the first world war; his experiences on the battlefield seeping into his daily life, consuming him, holding him captive somewhere between the tumult of the trenches …

The Progression Of Pattern Alteration, Chloe Tschetter Apr 2023

The Progression Of Pattern Alteration, Chloe Tschetter

Celebration of Research

This project explored different methods to alter patterns to create various designs in garments. It also included drafting basic bodices based on one’s measurements to create a well fitting base to start from. Alterations included pleating, style lines, and geometric patterning. All patterns were created on paper and turned into a muslin mock-up, before a final piece was created.

The Sound Of The Civil War: Examining The Intersection Between Music And Emotion In America, 1861-1865, Christina Cannon Apr 2023

The Sound Of The Civil War: Examining The Intersection Between Music And Emotion In America, 1861-1865, Christina Cannon

Campus Research Month

The topics of the history of music and the history of music intersect in the Civil War in fascinating ways. Both religious music and “secular” music were seen to have great power over their listeners, potentially with the power to alter the directions of lives or their salvation status. Music was used both as a mode of rebellion against the antagonizing army and ideal and a rebellion against unnecessarily violent acts. Each side used it against the other, but a select few also used it against the war itself. Soldiers marched to music, set camp to music, and fought to …

Visualizing Literary Narratives With A Graph-Centered Approach., Meg Ermer Apr 2023

Visualizing Literary Narratives With A Graph-Centered Approach., Meg Ermer

Campus Research Month

The art of storytelling is multifaceted and nonlinear, involving multiple characters, themes, and symbols while often jumping between the present and past. While media forms such as novels can encapsulate these complexities, it is often difficult to visualize a narrative in an easy-to-understand format. Our contribution is a graph-based system to let users organize and visualize those narratives. Events and characters are represented as nodes and their relationships are represented as edges. Neo4J is used as a database management system to store the graph and to run queries on it, and Streamlit and Pyvis are used to represent the database …

Masculinity, Empire, And The Boyhood Companion In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, Ruth Rempart Apr 2023

Masculinity, Empire, And The Boyhood Companion In Mary Shelley’S Frankenstein And Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, Ruth Rempart

Campus Research Month

In 19th-century Britain, rigid social hierarchies and gender roles play a largely unseen role in the rise of the empire. In a society that relies upon the myths of heroic or self-sustaining masculinity to maintain the public sphere, how a “nontraditional” gentleman decides to affirm their masculinity can have a significant impact on the country’s cultural consciousness. As seen in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, young men tend to reassert their gender identities by pursuing careers that further British imperialist agendas. This paper examines the intersection between gender studies and postcolonial theory in 19th-century …

Intentional Passing And Closeted Agency, Logan Bohlinger Apr 2023

Intentional Passing And Closeted Agency, Logan Bohlinger

Theses

It is characteristic of closeted queer agents that they behave so as to pass as heterosexual, cisgender, or otherwise as non-queer. Thus, I take it that an action-theoretic account of the phenomenon of straight-passing is essential to developing an action-theoretic account of the practical disposition of being “in the closet.” To progress towards a broader account of closeted queer agency, I endeavor in this thesis to clarify the patterns of practical reasoning involved in straight-passing with an aim to demonstrate that straight-passing, in all its forms, is something that a queer agent can intentionally do. However, a queer agent often …
