C.S. Lewis On Scripture And The Christ, The World Of God: Convergence And Divergence With Karl Barth, P. H. Brazier
C.S. Lewis On Scripture And The Christ, The World Of God: Convergence And Divergence With Karl Barth, P. H. Brazier
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
The aim of this paper is to explore a fundamental convergence between Lewis and Barth in their understanding of the w/Word of God, or the ground of their respective doctrines of Scripture. Lewis, like Barth, distinguished between the word of God (Scripture) and the Word of God (Christ). Each asks and answers the question: What is the relationship between Scripture and Christ? This work will also explore the priority of the Word above all else, including the church and the Bible: as Lewis commented, “We have no abiding city even in philosophy: all passes except the Word.” Finally, it will …
Enchanting Luna And Militant Mars: The Shorter Planetary Fiction Of C.S. Lewis, Bruce R. Johnson
Enchanting Luna And Militant Mars: The Shorter Planetary Fiction Of C.S. Lewis, Bruce R. Johnson
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
As the debate surrounding Ward’s theory continues—all the more so with the recent release of a book version of The Narnia Code—a reexamination of Lewis’ shorter planetary fiction seems in order. In his lunar tale, “Forms of Things Unknown,” and in his Martian story, “Ministering Angels,” what aspects of the older cosmological model can be discerned? Are they in keeping with what Ward claims are the essences of Luna and Mars, as Lewis understood them? And what, if any, theological points may Lewis be making in these two tales? The present study will address each of these three issues. It …
The Lewis-Anscombe Debate: A Philosophical Reformulation, James E. Taylor
The Lewis-Anscombe Debate: A Philosophical Reformulation, James E. Taylor
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
This paper will not examine the evaluative and historical questions that have arisen about this debate. Instead, it will provide an extensive reformulation and explanation of the philosophical arguments employed by both Lewis and Anscombe which are contained in their published works that are directly related to the debate. These works are the first edition of Miracles,3 which contains the argument that forms the basis of the debate, the essay that Anscombe read at the Socratic Club, and Lewis’ second edition of Miracles. Hopefully, this will serve to clarify the concepts, issues, and arguments employed in the debate and its …
C.S. Lewis, Public Intellectual, Samuel Joeckel
C.S. Lewis, Public Intellectual, Samuel Joeckel
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
Despite such hints and evocations, it appears that no one has attempted a systematic analysis of Lewis as a public intellectual. That is, no one has methodically employed extant theories on the concept of the public intellectual to assess how (or even whether) he fits the bill. No one has used these theories as an interpretive lens for analyzing Lewis’ writings. No one has analyzed the historical conditions during Lewis’ lifetime that pushed him into the role of public intellectual. No one has explored how Lewis adheres to the conventions of public discourse, the language of the public intellectual. And …
Is Pain A Problem? J.J. Rousseau And C.S. Lewis On Suffering And Human Nature, Trevor Shelley, Jacob Siegler
Is Pain A Problem? J.J. Rousseau And C.S. Lewis On Suffering And Human Nature, Trevor Shelley, Jacob Siegler
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
What is meant here is whether the phenomenon of pain can be intellectually accounted for, in the sense of why it exists at all and how it relates to the nature of man. Or, to state matters differently: Can the problem of pain’s presence in the lives of human beings be theoretically solved? To approach this problem, this work will examine the thought of Jean Jacques Rousseau and C. S. Lewis on the problem of pain and happiness and on human nature more generally.

Adventures Dipped In Myth: The Voyage Of The 'Dawn Treader' As Quest Saga, D. G. Kehl
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
"No works of Lewis deal with the quest motif more extensively, consistently, and significantly than The Chronicles of Narnia (1950–6)....It is The Voyage of the ‘Dawn Treader,’ however, which perhaps best exemplifies the quest motif and which itself constitutes a quest saga."

C.S. Lewis' Aesthetics, Adam Barkman
C.S. Lewis' Aesthetics, Adam Barkman
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
While some might be tempted to think that C. S. Lewis wrote more on aesthetic themes than on anything else they would be mistaken. For aesthetics has to do with broad, theoretical questions concerning beauty and art, while Lewis’ writings on literary history, literary criticism, and, to a lesser degree, literary theory tend to be more specific. In addition, although people might point to Lewis’ vast outpourings on myth as evidence of his intense interest in aesthetics, they would only be partly correct. As this author has argued elsewhere,1 even though myth touches beauty and can indeed be made into …
