President Lincoln Finds A Permanent Seat On Campus: The Dedication Of The New Abraham Lincoln Statue Outside Stevens Hall, Jeffrey L. Lauck
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
Students, faculty, and visitors to Gettysburg College have likely noticed the most recent addition to our campus. Last Friday, a brand new bronze statue of President Abraham Lincoln was dedicated outside Stevens Hall. The statue, which stands nine feet tall, depicts a seated President Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation and was designed by Stanley Watts, who also designed the Lincoln statue outside the Gettysburg Public Library on Baltimore Street. The statue unveiling comes almost 153 years to the day when President Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, which gave the Confederate States 100 days to return to the Union before …

Pure Act: The Uncommon Life Of Robert Lax [Table Of Contents], Michael N. Mcgregor
Biography
Pure Act tells the story of poet Robert Lax, whose quest to live a true life as both an artist and a spiritual seeker inspired Thomas Merton, Jack Kerouac, William Maxwell and a host of other writers, artists and ordinary people. Known in the U.S. primarily as Merton’s best friend and in Europe as a daringly original avant-garde poet, Lax left behind a promising New York writing career to travel with a circus, live among immigrants in post-war Marseilles and settle on a series of remote Greek islands where he learned and recorded the simple wisdom of the local people. …

Language Policy And Bilingual Education For Immigrant Students At Public Schools In Japan, Naomi Asakura
Language Policy And Bilingual Education For Immigrant Students At Public Schools In Japan, Naomi Asakura
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis discusses the current Japanese language (nihongo) education for immigrant students at public schools in Japan and provides recommendations through the study of language policy and the comparison of bilingual education in the United States. The current situation of a decreasing birth rate and increasing aging population in Japan has led to the acceptance of more foreign workers. Due to this change, language education in Japan has increasing development. The focus of chapter 1 is on the theories of language policy. This paper particularly focuses on the ideas of Wright (2004), Neustupný (2006), Spolsky (2004), and Cooper (1989), and …

Colonialism And Compromise : The Shanghai Municipal Council And The Arrest Of Communists, 1927-1937, Kwok Fai, Peter Law
Lingnan Theses
Pressured by the Chinese authorities and the Foreign Office, the Shanghai Municipal Council was forced to compromise with the Nationalist government on the issue of the arrest of communists in the Settlement between 1927 and 1937. Planning for a gradual retreat in the face of fervid Chinese nationalism, the British government had no choice but to ask the Shanghai Municipal Council to satisfy the demands of the Chinese. Meanwhile, confronted with the communist assassinations and open assaults, the law and order in the International Settlement was under serious threat if the Shanghai Municipal Council refused to cooperate with the Nationalists. …

As we watch the cast of characters vying for the Republican presidential nomination in this not-so-invisible primary season, there appears to be a common thread to their conversations: keep the government out of my life and my business. But this call for out-of-my-life government is contrary to the federal activism that one of the Republican Party’s most admired presidents advocated. [excerpt]

Animal Experimentation As A Form Of Rescue, Alexander Zambrano Mr.
Animal Experimentation As A Form Of Rescue, Alexander Zambrano Mr.
Between the Species
In this paper I explore a new approach to the ethics of animal experimentation by conceiving of it as a form of rescue. The notion of rescue, I suggest, involves some moral agent(s) performing an action or series of actions, whose end is to prevent or alleviate serious harm to another party, harm that otherwise would have occurred or would have continued to occur, had that moral agent not intervened. Animal experiments that are utilized as a means to alleviate human illnesses mirror the structure of rescue cases and this means that we can and should apply principles of rescue …

Ethics Conference
A core classroom value for many college and university instructors is academic integrity and honesty. Instructors often employ a range of strategies to strengthen academic integrity and limit academic dishonesty in their individual courses. By bringing together panelists from a variety of disciplines and professional experiences, who teach a range of courses in diverse formats, levels, and sizes, this panel aims to generate a discussion about how to support a culture of academic integrity. We will address these issues based on how we think about academic integrity and dishonesty, our discipline or course specific concerns, our physical and institutional environments, …
