Rewriting, Ideology, And Poetics In Goldblatt's Translation Of Mo Yan's 天堂蒜薹之歌 (The Garlic Ballads)", Ping Du, Lili Zhang
Rewriting, Ideology, And Poetics In Goldblatt's Translation Of Mo Yan's 天堂蒜薹之歌 (The Garlic Ballads)", Ping Du, Lili Zhang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "Rewriting, Ideology, and Poetics in Goldblatt's Translation of Mo Yan's 天堂蒜薹之歌 (The Garlic Ballads)" Ping Du and Lili Zhang analyze Howard Goldblatt's translation of the novel in order to explore literary "rewriting" in translation. Du and Zhang posit that Goldblatt's translation reflects ideology in concealing, discarding, rewriting, and even losing some part in his translation. Further, they argue that the translation of the novel has beenperformed based on specific aspects of poetics including the musical charm of Chinese ballads and their unique cultural images.
Shakespeare's Art And Artifice: Passing For Real In As You Like It, Kristen Nicole Cardon
Shakespeare's Art And Artifice: Passing For Real In As You Like It, Kristen Nicole Cardon
Theses and Dissertations
Gender performativity, detailed by Judith Butler and accepted by most contemporary queer theorists, rests on an agentive model of gender wherein “genders are appropriated, theatricalized, worn, and done” (“Imitation and Gender Insubordination” 716). This academic orthodoxy is challenged, however, by the increasing presence of transgender persons joining the theoretical discourse, many of whom experience an essential gender as a central facet of their identity. I respond to Katie R. Horowitz’s recent modification of Butler’s theories—a theory of omniperformance to dissolve the distinction between performance and performativity, and thereby between artifice and “real life.” I argue that gender-as-art, a schema that …
Betende Hande: Albrecht Durer's Self-Portrait As A Gothic Church, Christine Heathcote
Betende Hande: Albrecht Durer's Self-Portrait As A Gothic Church, Christine Heathcote
Theses and Dissertations
In 1508 Albrecht Dürer, famed German printmaker and Nürnberg citizen, was commission by Jakob Heller of Frankfurt to paint a large altarpiece for a new church. The Heller Altarpiece was the second commission of the printer since his training in Venice, Italy (1504-1507) to paint like an Italian master. In order to prepare for such a commission, Dürer spent over a year creating drawings of black ink and white chalk on blue Venetian paper to serve as inspiration for the large painting. However once the painting was complete, the artist held onto these ink and chalk drawings as part of …
Identifying And Understanding The Difference Between Japanese And English When Giving Walking Directions, Keiko Moriyama Barney
Identifying And Understanding The Difference Between Japanese And English When Giving Walking Directions, Keiko Moriyama Barney
Theses and Dissertations
In order to better identify and understand the differences between Japanese and English, the task of giving walking directions was used. Japanese and American public facilities (10 each) were randomly chosen from which to collect data over the phone in order to examine these differences based on the following five communication styles: 1) politeness, 2) indirectness, 3) self-effacement, 4) back-channel feedback (Aizuchi), 5) and other linguistic and cognitive differences in relation to space and giving directions. The study confirmed what the author reviewed in the literature: Japanese are more polite, English speakers tend to give directions simply and …
Burke's Poetic Metaphor And Obama As Poet, Devon S. Cook
Burke's Poetic Metaphor And Obama As Poet, Devon S. Cook
Theses and Dissertations
At the end of Permanence and Change, Kenneth Burke calls for a new orientation toward life and social action which he refers to as “the poetic metaphor” (261). This essay connects Burke's briefly used poetic metaphor with his theories on the use of “poetic” language in the essay “Semantic and Poetic Meaning.” What results from this synthesis is a critical tool for rhetorical analysis which allows for the discussion of style as a vehicle for communication about ethics and morals in public discourse. Obama's The Audacity of Hope is used as the example of a text which uses “poetic” …
We Heard Our Voices With The Hyenas And Other Stories: The Community Of Strangers, Rebekah Washburn Olson
We Heard Our Voices With The Hyenas And Other Stories: The Community Of Strangers, Rebekah Washburn Olson
Theses and Dissertations
Community is often defined by the familial or residential relationships we have, such as family, neighbors or coworkers. But there is another vital and often unobserved community among strangers. These relationships are often haphazard, temporary relationships formed in a moment of necessity—customers trapped in a convenience store by a storm, orphaned runaway teenagers who band together for safety on the streets, miners trapped in the rubble of a collapsed mine, etc. These communities are spontaneous and often undefined, but have the potential to reveal more about our insecurities, reflexes, and emotional capacities than almost any other relationship. For many, they …

The Reception Of Mao's 'Talks At The Yan'an Forum On Literature And Art' In English-Language Scholarship, Qilin Fu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "The Reception of Mao's 'Talks at the Yan'an Forum on Literature and Art' in English-language Scholarship" Qilin Fu examines the three waves of the reception of Mao Zedong's 1942 text. Fu elaborates on the understandings of Mao's ideas about literature and art and discusses the changes depending on historical and political contexts. Fu argues that the changes are explicit or implicit representations of cultural politics ranging from an anti-communist criticism based on Cold War ideology to the concerns of literary theory and the cultural critique of discourse in the context of globalization.

About English-Language Scholarship On Humor In Ancient Chinese Literature, Peina Zhuang, Lei Cheng
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "About English-language Scholarship on Humor in Ancient Chinese Literature" Peina Zhuang and Lei Cheng present an overview of scholarship by English-language Sinologists on humor. Zhuang and Cheng argue that while English-language scholars have played a path-breaking role in making prominent an important aspect of ancient Chinese literature, their studies also display weaknesses including questionable choices of source material, decontextualized analysis, or even mistranslation. They posit that the study of humor in ancient Chinese literature ought to be performed in a contextual perspective including linguistics, literary history, society, politics, etc.

Han's (韓邦慶) Novel 海上花列傳 (The Sing-Song Girls Of Shanghai) And Urbanity In Late Qing Shanghai, Xiaojue Wang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Han's (韓邦慶) Novel海上花列傳 (The Sing-Song Girls of Shanghai) and Urbanity in Late Qing Shanghai" Xiaojue Wang discusses the relationship between the urban milieu in the foreign concessions of Shanghai and the late Qing courtesan culture through a critical reading of Bangqing Han's (韓邦慶1856-1894) novel The Sing-Song Girls of Shanghai. Wang argues that Han's novel is a significant departure from traditional vernacular fiction in three aspects: 1) its illustration of the connection between courtesan culture and the rising modern city, 2) its portrayal of emergent female subjectivity and female space in the late Qing, …

Mapping Chinese Literature As World Literature, Yingjin Zhang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Mapping Chinese Literature as World Literature" Yingjin Zhang revisits the challenge of mapping Chinese literature as world literature in three steps: 1) he delineates of positions of view as proposed by Western scholars who engaged in rethinking world literature(s) in the age of globalization, 2) evaluates consequences of such a new mapping for Chinese literature and tests a different set of "technologies of recognition" (Shih) in the context of Chinese versus Sinophone studies, and 3) returns to the notion of world literature(s) by considering issues of language and translation and entertains a new vision of mobility via …

Positions Of Sinophone Representation In Jin's (金庸) Chivalric Topography, Weijie Song
Positions Of Sinophone Representation In Jin's (金庸) Chivalric Topography, Weijie Song
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Positions of Sinophone Representation in Jin's (金庸) Chivalric Topography" Weijie Song examines Yong Jin's post-1949 Hong Kong chivalric imagination of imperial Beijing and beyond during the Ming-Qing Dynastic transition and the dialects of inclusive exclusion and exclusive inclusion. In Cold War Hong Kong, Jin charted a wide range of chivalric activities: intruding into the political center embodied by the Forbidden City (the "Great Within") and fleeing to peripheral regions such as Xinjiang's Islamic community, the overseas kingdom in Brunei in Southeast Asia, and an unknown place somewhere inside Yangzhou. Song argues that Jin's literary topography suggests a …
Chinese Literature's Route To World Literature, Hongtao Liu
Chinese Literature's Route To World Literature, Hongtao Liu
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Chinese Literature's Route to World Literature" Hongtao Liu argues that Goethe's theory of world literature based on the conflicting and unifying values of cosmopolitanism and localism has fueled Chinese literature's desire to join world literatures. Proposed by Zhenduo Zheng with the notion of the "unification of literature" at the beginning of the twentieth century and developed in the 1980s, the "global elements of twentieth-century Chinese literature" in the twenty-first century, this notion remains a feature of Chinese literature's global trajectory. Liu argues that although the experience of a number of transitions, China's pursuit remains relevant and translation …

About The Chinese School Of Comparative Literature, He Lin, Danqing Huang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In their article "About the Chinese School of Comparative Literature" He Lin and Danqing Huang discuss the development of the Chinese school of comparative literature since the 1980s. Lin and Huang describe how based on traditions in Chinese literary history, comparatists constructed a system of theoretical frameworks and methods. They argue that the Chinese School should not be criticized as "Chinacentric" just for the fact that its practitioners perform Chinese-Western comparative studies within its own historical and cultural context. Further, they defend the Chinese School by examining the achievements it has made in comparative poetics and the study of reception …

ISBN 978-0-19-965309-6. Priestley offers a reconsideration of Herodotus’ reception in Hellenistic culture: he prefigures many of the cultural preoccupations of the Hellenistic period, he was in fact widely read and imitated, and it was within Hellenistic culture that he arrives at his Ciceronian status as the ‘father of history’.

This dissertation examines the relationship between the Davidic covenant and Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants as it is reflected in the editorial shape and shaping of the Masoretic Psalter. It hypothesizes that editors understood these covenants as a theological unity, whose common fulfillment centers on the anticipated royal successor of David. The promises and obligations of the covenants would …

Oesch, Joel, C. "More than a Pretty Face: Using Embodied Lutheran Theology to Evaluate Community-building in Online Social Networks." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2015. 264pp.
The human body holds a special place in Christian theology. Jesus gives of his body in the crucifixion and experiences bodily resurrection on Easter morning. The sacrament of Holy Communion is a common partaking in the actual body and blood of Christ. But what of the human body for the Christian, and of what import does this have for the broader community? The dissertation seeks to build on these facts and make a case for …

Xunzi And Naturalistic Ethics, Sor-Hoon Tan
Xunzi And Naturalistic Ethics, Sor-Hoon Tan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
The ascendency of science in modern times makes it commonplace to accept that science presents the only true and correct image of reality. This has led to naturalization attempts in various domains, from epistemology, metaphysics, to philosophy of mind, and ethics. Naturalistic ethics may mean different things depending on what we consider natural. David Copp equates it with the empirical – emphasizing the relevance of empirical evidence to justification – while admitting that what is empirical is itself problematic.1 One might count as empirical that which can be observed by our physical senses, or more narrowly that which can be …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate social media marketing and its impact on the relationship between the users (audience) and movie profiles (production studios). The research from this study was to help understand if social media would help promote movies. A survey was conducted to determine what social media people were invested in, how they learned about movies, and if a movie’s social media profile had any impact on people. The results of this study can be used to develop a production studio’s marketing plan with the usage of social media.
