Altared Object, Erin Jameson Brown
Altared Object, Erin Jameson Brown
Theses
The thesis exhibition Altared Object seeks to undermine and expose the established religious and patriarchal practices that cause harm to women in contemporary society. In my art, I attempt to expose the latent sexist oppression that exists in society and in the church; how fundamental and foundational it is to our societal norms; and how this oppression is still widely accepted and adhered to, but not necessarily acknowledged today. Through the use of massproduced objects which I have purchased from thrift stores or found online, seemingly innocuous objects will be repurposed through a process of appropriation and reintroduced in a …

Mexico’S Real Wages In The Age Of The Great Divergence, 1730-1930, Amilcar Challú
Mexico’S Real Wages In The Age Of The Great Divergence, 1730-1930, Amilcar Challú
History Faculty Publications
This study builds the first internationally comparable index of real wages for Mexico City bridging the eighteenth and the early twentieth century. Real wages started out in relatively high international levels in the mid eighteenth century, but declined from the late 1770s on, with some partial and temporal rebounds after the 1810s. After the 1860s real wages recovered and eventually reached eighteenth-century levels in the early twentieth century. Real wages of Mexico City’s workers slid behind those of high-wage economies to converge with the lower fringes of middle-wage economies. The age of the global great divergence was Mexico’s own age …
Review Of Social Class In Applied Linguistics By David Block, Frank Bramlett
Review Of Social Class In Applied Linguistics By David Block, Frank Bramlett
English Faculty Publications
As Block writes in the prologue and the epilogue, the book is primarily about erasure; his motivation for writing the book is to highlight “the substantial and sometimes complete erasure of social class in applied linguistics research due to the ways in which applied linguists frame their discussions of issues such as identity, inequality, disadvantage and exclusion” (pp. ix–x). Overall, Block achieves his goal of illustrating the widespread absence of social class in applied linguistics; however, the book itself makes some missteps in exploring the very construct it claims as its focus.
The book is divided into five chapters. Chapter …

Biology Textbooks And The Decentering Of The Scopes Trial, William Vance Trollinger
Biology Textbooks And The Decentering Of The Scopes Trial, William Vance Trollinger
History Faculty Publications
I was reminded of this while reading Adam Shapiro’s fine book, Trying Biology: The Scopes Trial, Textbooks, and the Antievolution Movement in American Schools. Central to Trying Biology is the argument that the Scopes Trial was not the inevitable result of an eternal conflict between science and religion, but instead grew out of "debates over American education that had little to do with either science or religion" (12). As Shapiro nicely articulates, the school antievolution movement that emerged in the early 1920s was a backlash against schools teaching evolution "in a politically charged way" and "to a new population of …

OLLAS has reported on the socio-economic characteristics of Latinos in Omaha and Nebraska for many years. For the past couple of years, OLLAS and other organizations have shared concerns about the barriers that may block the full deployment of this population’s talents and abilities, and their full and equitable integration into the city of Omaha. To explore these concerns, we organized a series of conversations (conversatorios) in March 2015 with proportionate participation of Latinos at the grassroots and in leadership positions. Eventually, these conversations were to be extended to include a wider array of stakeholders from the larger community.

Take It To The Bridge: The Arts Of Interfaith Peacebuilding, Sharenda Roam
Take It To The Bridge: The Arts Of Interfaith Peacebuilding, Sharenda Roam
Doctor of Ministry
This writing argues that the arts go beyond dialogue to affect and enhance interfaith peacebuilding, understanding, and cooperation. My research focuses on the three Abrahamic Faiths, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, with an in-depth analysis of music and peacebuilding amidst Jews and Arabs in Israel. Specifically, I discuss the use of music as a bridge of understanding between cultures and share examples of other types of art as well. This research also adds to the limited amount of theory, analysis, and writing in the subject area of peacebuilding and the arts. Section One introduces the terms and ideas surrounding the topics …
Re-Imagining Eros: Dare To Fall In Love With God, Christopher Peter Lindstrom
Re-Imagining Eros: Dare To Fall In Love With God, Christopher Peter Lindstrom
Doctor of Ministry
The twenty first century has a myriad of issues that people are passionate about, from sports to social concerns such as Habitat for Humanity. For example, consider when Apple introduces a new iPhone, people will sleep overnight outside the Apple store to be one of the first to obtain the new product. The question that I pondered over the last ten years is why aren’t Christians clamoring with the same type of energy when talking about their relationship with God? The pre-biblical Greek understanding of agape has become amplified in the manner in which Christians live out their faith. The …
A Contemporary Ophelia Reads The Sonnets, Vicki J. Simpson
A Contemporary Ophelia Reads The Sonnets, Vicki J. Simpson
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Shakespeare’s Ophelia is a complex character—she’s multilayered, conflicted, and evocative. Exactly how a woman from such a golden age of exploration and expansion in England’s history could have lived such a circumscribed existence is certainly understandable, given the time period, but it’s also an incalculable tragedy. In this piece, I invite you to suspend your disbelief and join me in an imaginative quest to see how this star-crossed noblewoman from Denmark might approach Shakespeare’s Sonnets 29, 30, and 122, from a decadent, epicurean, self-indulgent, and entirely postmodern perspective.

Finding Place: Chaos, Control, & I, Brandi Rackers
Theses
This thesis and accompanying exhibition seeks to investigate through visualization the role of individual units within a system through personal association with those individual units. The art forms in the exhibition are artifacts of the pseudo-scientific process that I have developed. Through scientific research and interpretations of personal experiences, the process seeks to explore system construction, functionality and degree of success regarding each. The role of the individual unit within systems and the manner in which it exercises a potent influence is elucidated. As a consequence, the exhibition provides self-reflective information and an environment for viewers to consider the effects …
The Moral Value Of Envy, Krista Karbowski Thomason
The Moral Value Of Envy, Krista Karbowski Thomason
Philosophy Faculty Works
It is common to think that we would be morally better people if we never felt envy. Recently, some philosophers have rejected this conclusion by arguing that envy can often be directed toward unfairness or inequality. As such, they conclude that we should not suppress our feelings of envy. I argue, however, that these defenses only show that envy is sometimes morally permissible. In order to show that we would not be better off without envy, we must show how envy is not merely morally permissible, but morally valuable. Here I provide a defense of envy's moral value. I argue …

Potential Worldview And Behavioral Transformation Within The Ugandan Lgbt And Evangelical Context, Phil Smart
Potential Worldview And Behavioral Transformation Within The Ugandan Lgbt And Evangelical Context, Phil Smart
Doctor of Ministry
To fulfill the mission entrusted to believers by God and shown through the incarnation of Jesus Christ, the same principle of loving others unconditionally is the Church’s mandate. Unfortunately, Ugandan traditional worldviews, compounded by outside influences, have contributed to bringing this self-proclaimed, Christian nation to a point of worldwide recognition and reprimand because of its destructive anti-gay legislation and oppression of the LGBT community.1 Focusing on the struggle between Ugandan evangelical leaders and their response to those with same-sex orientation, this dissertation seeks to investigate the use of Cultural Intelligence (CQ) as a tool for mitigating the destructive attitudes and …

The generation of communal knowledge is not a new phenomenon. In the late nineteenth century, the Oxford English Dictionary solicited volunteers to submit words and their usage for inclusion in the dictionary ( 1 ). Carl Becker, writing in 1932 on what was already an old discussion in the historical profession, noted that "if the essence of history is the memory of things said and done, then it is obvious that every normal person, Mr. Everyman, knows some history" (2). The historian Jo Guldi's work on participatory mapping shows that urban planners in the middle of the twentieth century attempted …

Breaking Into The Business: A Guide To Creating A Dynamic Resume Reel And Securing A Job In Today’S Television News Industry, Christina Favuzzi
Breaking Into The Business: A Guide To Creating A Dynamic Resume Reel And Securing A Job In Today’S Television News Industry, Christina Favuzzi
Journalism
Broadcast journalists are experiencing turbulence in their field of expertise due to increasing digitalization and decreased funding. It is becoming commonplace for reporters to work as one-man-bands, or “multimedia journalists,” shooting and editing their own video in addition to writing and reporting. For people looking to begin a career in the highly competitive broadcast news industry, there is a great deal of information to understand and consider prior to beginning the job search. Creating a dynamic resume reel is central to landing a job as an on-air reporter. However, with the development of digital-first and multimedia journalism, there are certain …
Reality In Shakespeare And The Digital World [A Review By John Sievers Of Shakespeare And The Digital World: Redefining Scholarship And Practice, Edited By Christie Carson And Peter Kirwan], John Sievers
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The collection of essays edited by Christie Carson and Peter Kirwan, Shakespeare and the Digital World: Redefining Scholarship and Practice, came to me at a pertinent moment. I started reading it after I had pushed a squeaky-wheeled cart full of twenty-eight iPads to class, then used a document camera displaying my iPad and fingers to show the class how to search a database. Later that day, I also observed a student use a smartphone-based online dictionary app to hear how to pronounce Ceres. The student then used his new knowledge to further a group discussion about scansion in lines …

Very rarely, when bending the head over some worthy academic volume, perhaps with a title something like, Post-postmodernisms of Cross-colonial Language Theories or (Mal)contents: Forematter Errata in Eighteenth Century Rural Sermons, a revelation strikes the reader around page fifteen: “My God, I am actually going to enjoy this.” Some of us have experienced this jolt of pleasure and intellectual communion but few realize that it can occur even when the author has, unaccountably, snatched one of the best titles from a handwritten shortlist the reader has kept taped near her desk for her own current work-in-progress. Such, I can …

Blood Money: The Commodification Of Menstrual Education In The United States, Meghan Radosevic
Blood Money: The Commodification Of Menstrual Education In The United States, Meghan Radosevic
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
girl’s first menstrual cycle is often considered the first step of the seemingly ritualistic passage into womanhood. However, most girls within the United States who experience menarche fail to view it as a rite of passage, and instead see it as an event they must endure rather than celebrate. Menstruation is a mystifying process for young girls, and the mystification is intensified through the lack of open conversations between pre- and post-menarcheal females. While pedagogical strategies in period education have evolved over time, the one constant within menstrual education is silence. This thesis aims to write into the silence surrounding …
