Two French Variations On Truth: Ricoeur's Attestation And Foucault's “Parrhesiastic” Attitude, Pol Vandevelde Mar 2015

Two French Variations On Truth: Ricoeur's Attestation And Foucault's “Parrhesiastic” Attitude, Pol Vandevelde

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Both Ricoeur and Foucault, apparently independently of each other, dedicated much effort to provide an account of truth that goes far beyond the truth of sentences, propositions, or judgments. While well aware of the speech act theory and pragmatics, they want to go beyond a formalism of rules of speech or arguments and integrate the attitude of the one who speaks in the very notion of truth. They see truth not merely as a property of statements, but as an existential process in such a way that the truth of statements is linked to the historically situated speaker. Truth as …

Value Driven: An Analysis Of Attitudes And Values Via Bet Programming Past And Present, Sasha M. Rice Mar 2015

Value Driven: An Analysis Of Attitudes And Values Via Bet Programming Past And Present, Sasha M. Rice

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This paper explores the general attitudes of African Americans towards the programming disseminated on the BET network past and present (pre-Viacom/post-Viacom). The mass media company Viacom acquired BET from African American founder Robert L. Johnson in 1980. BET under Johnson took pride in its ability to provide sophisticated, value-driven, and positive programming for African Americans. This study looks to see if the cultural values at BET have changed via its programming since Viacom’s purchase. This study utilized social media to survey 100 participants who were born prior to 1984 who identify as African American or mixed African American and are …

Localization, Globalization, And Traveling Chinese Culture, Chengjun Wang, Junhong Ma Mar 2015

Localization, Globalization, And Traveling Chinese Culture, Chengjun Wang, Junhong Ma

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Localization, Globalization, and Traveling Chinese Culture" Chengjun Wang and Junhong Ma discuss three main channels of the "traveling" of Chinese culture to the outside world. Focusing on the situation of bilingualism (i.e., Chinese and English) and the need of spreading Chinese literature and culture especially in the English-speaking world, Wang and Ma argue for "localization and globalization." Further, Wang and Ma argue that in order to narrow the gap of the cultural divide between China and the West. In addition to the need for bilingualism especially in the case of translation, they posit that especially the writing …

Variation Theory And The Reception Of Chinese Literature In The English-Speaking World, Shunqing Cao Mar 2015

Variation Theory And The Reception Of Chinese Literature In The English-Speaking World, Shunqing Cao

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Variation Theory and Reception of Chinese Literature in the English-Speaking World" Shunqing Cao introduces "variation theory" he developed and suggests that the framework can be applied in studying the dissemination and reception of Chinese literature in the English-speaking world. Cao argues that cultural and literary differences produce variations in literary exchanges among different cultures and variation theory concentrates on these variations. With unique perspectives on variation in translation, cultural misreading, and domestication, variation theory is a useful theoretical framework and methodology for the study of the reception of Chinese literature in the English-speaking world.

Designations Of Poetry In Translations Of Liu Xie's (劉勰) Work On Literary Genres, Ying Liu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Designations of Poetry in Translations of Liu Xie's (劉勰) Work on Literary Genres" Ying Liu discusses how Liu Xie (劉勰 465-521 AD) in his文心雕龍 (Wenxin diaolong) followed the tradition of The Book of Songs (詩經) and synthesized the original concept of sung (genre of classical poetry) in the Book of Songs with some later variations and thus constructed and shaped the notion of the genre sung. Liu analyses translations by selected scholars and explores the subtle nuances between sung and its English counterparts historically including "ode," "panegyric," "eulogy," and "hymn" in …

Review Of East Meets East: Chinese Discover The Modern World In Japan, 1854-1898, Michael Wert Mar 2015

Review Of East Meets East: Chinese Discover The Modern World In Japan, 1854-1898, Michael Wert

History Faculty Research and Publications

The argument in this book is simple but non-trivial: China encountered the modern world in Japan, especially after the fall of the last samurai regime and the creation of a modern oligarchy. Chinese intellectuals who visited Japan between the US expedition to Japan in 1854 and the onset of reforms following China's loss in the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) wrote about what they saw and, in so doing, introduced a new vocabulary of modernization used by the Chinese state.

Sacred Things, Sacred Bodies: The Ethics Of Materiality And Female Spirituality In Purple Hibiscus, Kylie Mcquarrie Mar 2015

Sacred Things, Sacred Bodies: The Ethics Of Materiality And Female Spirituality In Purple Hibiscus, Kylie Mcquarrie

Theses and Dissertations

Thing theorist Bill Brown writes that “the thing names less an object than a particular subject-object relation.” This article examines the subject-object relation between African things and African bodies in Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's first novel, Purple Hibiscus. While the main character, Kambili, eventually learns to assimilate Western Catholicism into her Nigerian reality, her Christian fundamentalist father, Eugene, uses Catholicism to justify his self-hating destruction of African things and bodies. This article argues that both reactions are rooted in the characters' ability or inability to see African material things, including both objects and bodies, as autonomous subjects. Adichie's …

Teaching Culture Using E-Portfoliosin A 4th-Semester University Spanish Classroom, Ricardo Gustavo Cetz Mar 2015

Teaching Culture Using E-Portfoliosin A 4th-Semester University Spanish Classroom, Ricardo Gustavo Cetz

Theses and Dissertations

The World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages (ACTFL, 2014) encourage teachers to help their students use the target language to “investigate, explain, and reflect” on the relationships between cultural products, practices, and perspectives. However, while most language instructors agree that language and culture should be connected, many fail to teach culture explicitly because they are so focused on the language components of their courses. Of those who do teach culture explicitly, many either teach only about the cultural products and not the perspectives, or they teach the culture in English because of its complexity. This project explores the use of e-portfolios …

The Terrifying And The Beautiful: An Ecocritical Approach To Alexandre Hogue's Erosion Series, Ann K. Hartvigsen Mar 2015

The Terrifying And The Beautiful: An Ecocritical Approach To Alexandre Hogue's Erosion Series, Ann K. Hartvigsen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the work of Texan painter Alexandre Hogue, and specifically how his 1930s Erosion Series, paintings of wind-ravaged farms during the Dust Bowl, promotes environmental attitudes long before America had a well developed ecological language. It analyzes the Erosion Series in the context of Hogue's personal land ethics and those of his artistic contemporaries, showing that the 1930s series strives to depict the devastation caused by both drought and aggressive farming practices. A comparison of Hogue's work to Regionalist artists like Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood reveals that Regionalists' depictions of land during the 1930s created an …

The Matriarchal Nimbus: Matthäus Gutrecht The Younger's The Holy Kinship, Camille J. Jacobsen Mar 2015

The Matriarchal Nimbus: Matthäus Gutrecht The Younger's The Holy Kinship, Camille J. Jacobsen

Theses and Dissertations

In The Holy Kinship (1500-1510), the artist Matthäus Gutrecht the Younger defies convention by portraying the importance of matriarchy, via the semiotics of the nimbus. Within Christian art, the nimbus has been widely used as a signifier of divinity. Saints and angels, as well as members of the Holy Family, are often depicted nimbed in the history of art. In particular, men of divine status are frequently nimbed, as Christianity was predominantly patriarchal. However, there are several cases in which women are also represented with this divine signifier. One work in which the nimbus as a signifier of matriarchal status …

Companionate And Pedagogic Marriage Models In Jane Austen's Sense And Sensibility And Emma, Kandace Hansen Wheelwright Mar 2015

Companionate And Pedagogic Marriage Models In Jane Austen's Sense And Sensibility And Emma, Kandace Hansen Wheelwright

Theses and Dissertations

Jane Austen, seen by some as the mother of all chick-lit, is synonymous with tales of love and marriage. Generally, scholars have classified the types of marriages Austen writes about as either companionate (a marriage based on love) or pedagogic (a marriage based on an older man training a younger woman to be his ideal wife). In comparing the companionate and pedagogic marriage models in Austen's Sense and Sensibility and Emma, however, one finds that these traditional definitions and classifications of the companionate and pedagogic marriages prove to be complicated. The companionate marriage is not only a marriage based on …

An Investigation Into The Motivational Practice Of Teachers Of Albanian And Japanese, Ana-Lisa Clark Mullen Mar 2015

An Investigation Into The Motivational Practice Of Teachers Of Albanian And Japanese, Ana-Lisa Clark Mullen

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the use and effectiveness of motivational strategies with teachers and learners of Albanian and Japanese at the Missionary Training Center (MTC) in Provo, UT. Each teacher was observed three times using a modified version of the Motivation Orientation of Language Teaching (MOLT) observation scheme that was first used by Guilloteaux & Dornyei (2008). Learners were surveyed using an instrument from that same study. Teachers were surveyed using a modified version of the instrument created by Cheng & Dornyei (2007). Data collected from these three instruments provide insight into (a) the relationship between teacher motivational practice and learner …

Visions Of The Past: Engagement And Avoidance Through Nostalgia In My Ántonia, Maren Mazzeo Mar 2015

Visions Of The Past: Engagement And Avoidance Through Nostalgia In My Ántonia, Maren Mazzeo

Theses and Dissertations

In Willa Cather's My Ántonia, nostalgia marks both the ambience of the novel and its critical focus. This thesis illuminates Cather's self-aware deployment of nostalgia as an artistic tool and nostalgia's role in Jim Burden's agenda-driven narrative. Jim adopts nostalgic narrative as propaganda to justify and glorify his past and present life, presenting his past as a simplified and romanticized origin myth. However, through the novel's frame narrative and the frequent, jarring vignettes of violence and discord, Cather undermines Jim's authority as a narrator and prompts reconsideration of Cather's endorsement of his nostalgic creation. By appreciating the complex deployment of …

Reevaluating The New Testament Text Of Didymus The Blind: An Examination Of The New Testament References In P. Byu 1, Michael Robert Trotter Mar 2015

Reevaluating The New Testament Text Of Didymus The Blind: An Examination Of The New Testament References In P. Byu 1, Michael Robert Trotter

Theses and Dissertations

In 1941 a large cache of papyri preserving the writings of Origen and Didymus the Blind were discovered in Tura, Egypt. 43 years later 22 signatures from the Tura papryi containing Ps. 26:10–29:2, 36:1–3 from Didymus the Blinds' commentary on Psalms were acquired by Brigham Young University. These signatures remain unpublished at present. This paper examines Didymus' use of the New Testament in this hitherto unpublished section of his commentary and seeks to reevaluate past scholarship on the New Testament text of Didymus in light of this new data. In addition to providing an inventory of all the New Testament …

Beatles Song Analysis, Clarissa Hinshaw Feb 2015

Beatles Song Analysis, Clarissa Hinshaw

2015 Honors Council of Illinois Region Student Symposium

This study employed several distinct disciplines in mathematics to isolate, examine, and optimize the various costs involved in managing a soup kitchen. “Soup Kitchen Statistics” is a mathematical model illustrating the inverse relationship between the ambient outside temperature and the homeless population of Joliet, IL. The use of calculus revealed key relationships among vital factors, the most important of which included the daily costs of operation as a function of meal attendance dependent on outside temperature. The study produced a realistic and logical mathematical model which enables management personnel at MorningStar Mission to forecast the needs of the kitchen simply …
