Narratives Of Violence: The White Imagination And The Making Of Black Masculinity In “City Of God”, Jaime Alves
Narratives Of Violence: The White Imagination And The Making Of Black Masculinity In “City Of God”, Jaime Alves
Publications and Research
The article explores the representation of young-black men in the 2002 film City of God. The film deploys “pathological scripts” of Black masculinity in Brazil as criminal and deviant. The controlling image of Black men’s bodies as a source of danger and impurity sustains Brazilian regime of racial domination, and the narratives of violence make explicit the ways in which the Brazilian nation is imagined though a racial underpinning. Blackness is consumed as an exotic commodity, yet is also understood as a threat to national harmony. The nation is, then, written and re-imagined as a racial paradise, but mostly by …

Theater Of War: Combining Entertainment And Art, Valerie N. Merlina
Theater Of War: Combining Entertainment And Art, Valerie N. Merlina
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
Did the theater work to benefit the causes for north or south, dependent upon region? Sautter stated that this phenomenon was less common than many might expect. Many actors stated their neutrality, or as one Civil War era actor said, “I am neither northerner nor southerner.” Still others simply responded to the war by leaving the country. One must consider the “clannish nature” of theater of the time in order to understand how actors could have taken the neutral role during a war of ideals: many actors were born into theater life, therefore did not grow up in any one …

The Doctrine Of Pre-Existence: A Window Into The Latter-Day Saint Concept Of Restoration, Chris Coltrin, Dr. S. Kent Brown
The Doctrine Of Pre-Existence: A Window Into The Latter-Day Saint Concept Of Restoration, Chris Coltrin, Dr. S. Kent Brown
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints claims to be a church of restoration—restoring what was taught in the church that Christ established when on the earth. My research sought to substantiate the claim of restoration by examining an unusual doctrine in the LDS Church and comparing it with that same doctrine as taught in the early Christian Church. The doctrine of “pre-existence” is one that is very unique to Mormonism in the Christian world of today. However, in the first 500 years of Christianity numerous church fathers believed and taught indepth about the pre-existence and its purpose …

Saints At War: Preserving The Histories Of Latter-Day Saint Servicemen And Women, Lindsay Payne Halgren, Dr. Dennis A. Wright
Journal of Undergraduate Research
War is a unique phenomenon for each person concerned; two soldiers in the same battle could face entirely different conflicts. In order to better understand the many facets of war and military life, we must investigate as many different accounts as possible. As Ralph Waldo Emerson states, “All history becomes subjective; in other words there is properly no history, only biography.” Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are no exception. Some Latter-day Saint servicemen experience quite singular events during wartime; countless others quietly do their duty without fanfare. Each person’s story is different, and each is …

Lds Missionary Work In The Basque Language: How The Work Began, And Why It Was Discontinued, Devin Caywood, Dr. Bruce Vanorden
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Basque Country is a relatively small region composed of three (arguably four) provinces in North Central Spain and two in Southern France. Statistics state that there are two million people in Spanish and French Basque provinces that claim Basque as their first language. 70-80 percent of those people also speak Spanish or French, although at varying levels of fluency. That leaves about 400,000 people who speak only Basque. These people can only be taught discussions in Basque, and can only read church literature in Basque. On top of those 400,000, there are many more (around one and a half million …

Understanding Leadership: An Experimental-Experiential Model, George T. Hole Ph.D
Understanding Leadership: An Experimental-Experiential Model, George T. Hole Ph.D
Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education
Books about leadership are dangerous to readers who fantasize about being leaders or apply leadership ideas as if they were proven formulas. As an antidote, I offer an experimental framework in which any leadership-management model can be tested to gain experiential understanding of the model. As a result one can gain reality-based insights about leadership and oneself. The experiment is described; resistances to engaging it are considered; and examples from a leadership group implementing Covey’s “Seven Principles are summarized. In the course of discussing individual’s experiments objections were voiced against this Socratic approach to understanding leadership. Finally, I sketch a …
