Safely Into The Unknown? A Review Of The Proposals For The Future Of English Heritage, Jamie Larkin
Safely Into The Unknown? A Review Of The Proposals For The Future Of English Heritage, Jamie Larkin
Art Faculty Articles and Research
On the 26th June 2013, plans were announced to split English Heritage - the public body responsible for the protection of England’s historic environment—into two separate organisations. In December 2013, the Department of Culture, Media, and Sport released a consultation document outlining the proposed changed and the justifications for them in greater detail. Under the plans the statutory duties toward heritage that English Heritage currently fulfils will remain under government auspices, while the management of its 400+ properties will be spun off into a self-funded charitable company by 2023. This paper lays out these proposed changes as clearly as possible, …

Literature Of Bushidō: Loyalty, Honorable Death, And The Evolution Of The Samurai Ideal, David A. Coldren
Literature Of Bushidō: Loyalty, Honorable Death, And The Evolution Of The Samurai Ideal, David A. Coldren
International ResearchScape Journal
This essay will address the evolution of the samurai warrior code (bushido), concentrating on its depiction in several prominent works of Japanese literature from 1185 to 1989. This essay will argue that rather than a concrete set of principles, bushido was actually a malleable set of romanticized qualities supposedly possessed by the samurai that were repeatedly adapted to a changing Japanese society in order to maintain a national identity predicated on the warrior class. Beginning with the introduction of the samurai through the Tale of the Heike, this essay will then proceed to discuss the blatant romanticization …

The Disintegration Of Yugoslavia: An Analysis Of Globalization Effects On Union And Disintegration Of Yugoslavia, Una Bobinac
International ResearchScape Journal
The purpose of writing this project is to identify the influence globalization had in two most important parts of Yugoslavia: its formation as well as its fragmentation. The effects of this ongoing process range from direct intervention in the breakup of Yugoslavia to more indirect influence in its formation. This research strongly centers on previously established and well accepted theories of globalization to illustrate the consequences globalization had on Yugoslavia specifically. Throughout the research, the concept of critical globalism emerges as the prevailing method in the attempt to explain the events that took place in this region. The findings and …

Theater Of War: Booth And Beyond, Valerie N. Merlina
Theater Of War: Booth And Beyond, Valerie N. Merlina
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
Lastly, we come upon perhaps the best known actor of the Civil War era, John Wilkes Booth. Of course, the reason memory allows us to recall the name is not because of the merits achieved through his profession, but rather because he murdered the elected executive official – United States President Abraham Lincoln. Booth, a product of a theater family, was a dramatic, eccentric, and impatient being. He wanted the leading roles, did not want to prepare the role, but to simply play the role. His brother, Edwin Booth, a talented poetical performer, one might deduce, did prepare for his …

Lunar New Year And Coca-Cola, Michelle Lee
SURGE
“Happy New Year!”
It’s a bit late for that, isn’t it? It’s already February.
Ironically, I was informed of the Lunar New Year by my beloved American friend, who seemed more excited to celebrate the Year of the Horse than I was. And then came the Toilet Paper Times, inviting students to the Attic to honor the holiday with Asian food and cultural exchange. [excerpt]

Syria And The Olympics: National Identity On An International Stage, Andrea L. Stanton
Syria And The Olympics: National Identity On An International Stage, Andrea L. Stanton
Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
Since its 1946 independence, Syria has fielded a team for every summer Olympic competition except 1956, yet has won only three Olympic medals. In contrast with its smaller, higher-powered neighbor Lebanon, its participation at the Olympics has been consistent but limited, with the country making little impact internationally. Yet the history of Syria’s involvement with the Olympics reflects key elements of its political and social history: its ambitious but short-lived partnership with Egypt, the Baathist-supported promotion of women as athletes and head of the National Olympic Committee, and its commitment to participation in the vexed but ideologically important Pan-Arab Games. …
The Evolutionary Function Of Conscious Information Processing Is Revealed By Its Task-Dependency In The Olfactory System, Andreas Keller
The Evolutionary Function Of Conscious Information Processing Is Revealed By Its Task-Dependency In The Olfactory System, Andreas Keller
Publications and Research
Although many responses to odorous stimuli are mediated without olfactory information being consciously processed, some olfactory behaviors require conscious information processing. I will here contrast situations in which olfactory information is processed consciously to situations in which it is processed non-consciously. This contrastive analysis reveals that conscious information processing is required when an organism is faced with tasks in which there are many behavioral options available. I therefore propose that it is the evolutionary function of conscious information processing to guide behaviors in situations in which the organism has to choose between many possible responses.

Discerning Segment Boundaries Within John 1:19-4:54, Joseph R. Dongell
Discerning Segment Boundaries Within John 1:19-4:54, Joseph R. Dongell
The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies
Bible commentators have traditionally supplied hierarchical outlines for the books they interpret under the assumption that texts are semantically structured, and that valid interpretation flows in part from accurately discerning textual structure. The disciplines of narrative criticism and discourse analysis have significantly advanced our understanding of textual structure, and have crossed paths by way of mutual influence with the IBS movement, which has given sustained attention to formalizing the study of textual structure. Against this backdrop, John 1:19-4:54 invites closer scrutiny in terms of the logic of its composition. The nearly universal agreement that 1:1-18 forms a clear literary unit, …
Interpretation And Structure In Joel, Thomas M. Lyons
Interpretation And Structure In Joel, Thomas M. Lyons
The Journal of Inductive Biblical Studies
Despite renewed interest in the book of Joel and its relationship to the “Book of the Twelve,” scholarly opinions still significantly diverge on the structure of the book of Joel itself. This article surveys recent significant and representative proposals for Joel’s structure before arguing for an alternative unified structure based upon grammar, literary markers or “catchwords”, and structural relationships (according to David R. Bauer and Robert A. Traina, Inductive Bible Study).

The agri-food sector plays an integral part in Ireland’s economy. It is the largest indigenous industry, contributing €26 billion in turnover and generating 12.3% of merchandise exports. The agri-food and drink sector accounts for 7.2% of Ireland's economy-wide GVA and 12.3% of Ireland’s exports. The sector supports around 170,000 jobs or 8.8% of total employment and makes a particularly significant contribution to employment in rural areas. (DAFM 2014).
In a rapidly changing environment the survival of the food service industry and the food retail markets depend to a large extent on their capacity to develop and market new or radically …
