Communicative Action And Mass Communication Via Internet Technologies, Jonathan Kaye Feb 2014

Communicative Action And Mass Communication Via Internet Technologies, Jonathan Kaye

2014 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

The purpose of this study was to analyze the work of German philosopher Jürgen Habermas, focusing on his theory of communicative action. In his work, Habermas specifically probes the epistemological question; how human beings can know anything at all? Through an interconnected scheme of: survival challenges, knowledge and action; there is found grounding for the physical sciences, the social sciences and philosophy itself. Communicative action becomes the “glue” that holds society together in reference to those sciences, for Habermas, communicative action is how shared meaning about the world is established and it is through communicative action and based on communicative …

Is There An Animal Consciousness? A Phenomenological Approach, Matt Mazur Feb 2014

Is There An Animal Consciousness? A Phenomenological Approach, Matt Mazur

2014 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

The notion of consciousness, animal or otherwise, has been often discussed throughout the history of human thought. More recently it has become a topic for debate in philosophy with many competing ideas emerging. This paper is an attempt to discuss the nature of animal consciousness using a phenomenological approach. Phenomenology is a branch of philosophy with the goal of discovering and describing the true nature of phenomena beyond the human subjective experience of them. Using the French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s work on perception, this paper argues for the acceptance of a form of consciousness in many animals while also seeking …

The Duty We Owe Our Creator; Reformed Theology Deism And Disestablishment In Virginia, John Parker Feb 2014

The Duty We Owe Our Creator; Reformed Theology Deism And Disestablishment In Virginia, John Parker

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution contains within it two distinct clauses, the first guarantees the free exercise of religion clause, the second prevents the establishment of a national church. Stating that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof’, this clause ensured that these United States would never have an official state church and that citizens could not be penalized for practicing their own faith. This was a major innovation. There did exist some provision for certain sects within the legal frame work, such as exemptions from the swearing …

Embracing Maturity: An Ignatian Christian Leadership Formation Model For Emerging Adults, Todd Dustin Clark Feb 2014

Embracing Maturity: An Ignatian Christian Leadership Formation Model For Emerging Adults, Todd Dustin Clark

Doctor of Ministry

The research of this project is concentrated on the integration of the disciplines of leadership, developmental psychology, and spiritual formation to inform a nine-month Christian leadership formation process for postmodern emerging adults. As the Staff Development Facilitator for an Outdoor Science Camp ministry (OSS), my task is twofold: (1) In regards to our mission, I aspire to help staff members develop leadership skills that prepare them to be excellent experiential educators; (2) in regards to formation, I desire to facilitate relevant spiritual growth for emerging adults. I believe the overlapping and pragmatic connection between these two goals is the art …

Congregational Leadership Development Through Mentorships: Preparing Each Generation For The Church's Future Through Family Systems Theory, Danny Wayne Russell Feb 2014

Congregational Leadership Development Through Mentorships: Preparing Each Generation For The Church's Future Through Family Systems Theory, Danny Wayne Russell

Doctor of Ministry

For some churches the most important qualification for a church leader is the person's age. When traditional churches have less younger people, they begin thinking of ways to attract the younger generations. Some churches may conclude that having a younger person in a leadership role will help them attract young people. Because the focus on the church becomes getting younger people, a younger person in a leadership role is most desired; therefore, the person's age becomes the deciding factor of who should be a deacon or elder in the church. Through looking at family system theory, the above approach to …

Throughout my four years of education and experience in the design world I’ve come to realize that the reason why I love design is because it can change people’s lives by improving the way they use space. My goal as a future designer is to create sustainable, functional and aesthetic spaces that perform for the people who work, visit and live in them. I love designing because it can make a difference.

Design Philosophy

I strive to meet others in their wholeness and individuality. To see them as unique individuals. The end goal is to create modern spaces that contribute to the health, safety, and welfare of the public. I design to bring a genuine smile to the many people I encounter.

Always reminded that each space needs to be as beautiful as its future owner. Therefore, we must always keep in mind to stay dedicated to the job and always respect the value of craftsmanship. Bringing contemporary design to a new client is always a thrill, but bringing satisfaction …
