Mastering Berio’S Sequenza For Oboe, Melanie Carter, Dr. Geralyn Giovannetti
Mastering Berio’S Sequenza For Oboe, Melanie Carter, Dr. Geralyn Giovannetti
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My principal goals upon starting this project were first, to prepare myself for graduate level studies, future orchestral playing, and teaching; and second, to help me gain an appreciation and understanding of 20th century music.
Inspire Or Damage: A Documentary Film About Travis Eberhard, Brad Barber, Thomas Lefler
Inspire Or Damage: A Documentary Film About Travis Eberhard, Brad Barber, Thomas Lefler
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In making this documentary film, my original intent was to document Travis Eberhard’s personality, humor, and goals as a recently BYU-graduated film student. Specifically, I wanted to achieve this by not asking him any questions about what it was like to live with a wheelchair. This was not to be what I consider “a typical film” highlighting how Travis overcomes the obstacles life has dealt him, or how he deals with being treated differently. However, I believe the project was unique in that I still wanted to achieve some of the same goals such a film might seek after. By …
The Literature Of Reconciliation: A Future For Afrikaans Publishing In South Africa, Desmond A. Eppel, Larry H. Peer
The Literature Of Reconciliation: A Future For Afrikaans Publishing In South Africa, Desmond A. Eppel, Larry H. Peer
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As an native English-speaking South African married to a native Afrikaans-speaking wife, this research project held special personal importance for me. My wife and I intend to raise our children in a bilingual environment, and have been concerned about the future of Afrikaans materials and products with which to teach our children. I approached my research in an effort to understand the different factors influencing the market for Afrikaans publishing in South Africa, and discovered a wealth of information which will hopefully be instructive in a comprehensive effort to predict future growth or decline in this market.
The Early Poetry Of Pablo Neruda: A Study Of Temuco As An Inspirational Source, James Krause, Dr. Ted Lyon
The Early Poetry Of Pablo Neruda: A Study Of Temuco As An Inspirational Source, James Krause, Dr. Ted Lyon
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto, whose pseudonym was to be Pablo Neruda, was born in the small Chilean town, Parral. His mother died two months after she gave birth to her son and two years later, Neruda’s father moved his small family to Temuco. After the Chilean military defeated the local Mapuche Indians, Temuco and the entire Araucano region was opened to settlers. With the extension of the railroad, Temuco soon became a bustling pioneer town. Many historians and literary experts have compared early 20th century Temuco to Frontier Oregon. Although Temuco was considered to be the “Far West” of Chile …

“The history of painting may be characterized in terms of the gradual withdrawal of painting from the task of representing reality – or of reality from the power of painting to represent it – in favor of an increasing preoccupation with problems intrinsic to painting itself…painting and sculpture became free to pursue concerns intrinsic to themselves.” -Michael Fried, critic
Portrait Of A Negress: Post-Colonial Studies Of A Black Female Subject, Abby Beal, Dr. Martha Peacock
Portrait Of A Negress: Post-Colonial Studies Of A Black Female Subject, Abby Beal, Dr. Martha Peacock
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The painting Portrait of a Negress completed in 1800 is a rare piece for its time. The painting is unique because of its isolation of a rare subject for art—the black woman. Not only is the subject rare, but also the painting gains more interest because the artist was a woman herself— uncommon in France in the 1800s. Traditionally, the connection between a painter and a black subject at this time can be seen as a colonial ownership over the black visual. However, the connection between the woman artist, Marie Benoist, and her black female subject in this painting is …
La Fine Del Mondo?, Namon D. Bills, Joseph Ostraff
La Fine Del Mondo?, Namon D. Bills, Joseph Ostraff
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In my proposal for this project I suggested doing a series of paintings which referred both to Michelangelo’s Last Judgement and to contemporary culture in order to raise questions about the end of the world and our view of it. I feel that conceptually my show stayed quite close to my original idea and was able, through the combination of Michelangelo’s figures and modern-day images and the progression shown through my work in series, to adequately communicate my ideas. Judging by a number of responses I got during my reception I believe that people were intrigued by this combination and …
Classic Chinese Fiction: Building A 21st Century Bridge For Ancient Chinese Literature, J Michael Isom, Dr. Gary Williams
Classic Chinese Fiction: Building A 21st Century Bridge For Ancient Chinese Literature, J Michael Isom, Dr. Gary Williams
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Prior to the European Renaissance, China continually led the world in virtually every conceivable field of thought and technology. Although they have temporarily fallen behind most of the industrialized world due to the lingering effects of several poor political and economic policies from the 19th and early 20th centuries, in many ways this sleeping giant is awaking once again. In fact, experts believe that, if current trends continue, China will even surpass the United States in economic and military prowess by the year 2025.

Nineteenth Century Mormon Poetry, Samuel S. Harkness, Dr. Richard H. Cracroft
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I still recall the day over four years ago when a General Authority proclaimed the LDS hymnal to be a ‘book of scripture.’ His seemingly bold declaration surprised me; but after reconsideration, it made sense. Some of the most spiritual times in my life have been accompanied by these “songs of the heart” (Doctrine and Covenants 45) Thus, the Preface of the hymnal reads, “Some of the greatest sermons are preached by the singing of hymns” (First Presidency ix). From then on, I viewed the hymns in a different light.
The Waldenses: A People Prepared For The Lord, David Rolph Seely, Dr. Jared M. Halverson
The Waldenses: A People Prepared For The Lord, David Rolph Seely, Dr. Jared M. Halverson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Over three hundred years before Martin Luther drove his ninety-five theses into the door of Catholicism, another Protestant group was being driven from their homes amidst the Alps&the Waldenses. Named for Peter Waldo, this early Christian sect rejected the authority of the Catholic Church and based all their beliefs on the Bible. Most scholars say the sect originated in the late 12th century, although some more zealous supporters have tried to argue that the Waldenses, or Vaudois in French, can be traced back to Christ’s original church itself.
Arabic Reading Instruction, Joshua Gubler, Steven Robertson, Dr. Kirk Belnap
Arabic Reading Instruction, Joshua Gubler, Steven Robertson, Dr. Kirk Belnap
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The “proficiency movement” of recent years has significantly changed the way Arabic is taught in the United States. No longer can teachers focus solely on reading and grammar in the classroom. They must additionally divide already limited class time between teaching listening and speaking skills. Because of this emphasis on speaking skills, many students, especially those learning less commonly taught or very difficult languages, do not learn to read well. In an effort to solve this problem, many teachers are looking for new ways to help students learn reading, by its nature an essentially personal endeavor, outside the classroom. To …
Timing The Introduction Of Kanji In The Study Of Japanese As A Second Language, Kerilee Grames, Dr. Robert A. Russell
Timing The Introduction Of Kanji In The Study Of Japanese As A Second Language, Kerilee Grames, Dr. Robert A. Russell
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Japanese language has a reputation of being difficult for native English speakers to master as a second language because of kanji, a complex, character alphabet that the Japanese borrowed from China. One of the greatest struggles for teachers of Japanese as a second language (JSL) is knowing when to introduce these foreign characters to their students. As a student who has struggled to learn kanji, and one who intends to also teach it, I proposed to study the research that has already been done in this area, to observe teachers of JSL in both Japan and America, and to …

Slave Women In Euripides: Struggling For Identity And Power In A Hostile World, Iantha M. Haight, Dr. Norbert H. O. Duckwitz
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Euripides’ plays continue to be very popular today because of their powerfully human themes. Because of their strong, emotional impact, however, many critics disagree on how to interpret Euripides’ views on women. Since so much knowledge about Greek society in general and women in particular has been lost, classical literature, such as poetry and plays, though difficult to interpret, are important sources of knowledge about the lives and attitudes of the ancient Greeks, especially in regards to the politically disenfranchised groups of women and slaves who feature insignificantly in political writings. Unlike Aeschylus and Sophocles, the other great Greek tragedians, …
In Search Of Grandeur: The Life And Times Of The Rio Grande, Todd Condie, Dr. John Bennion
In Search Of Grandeur: The Life And Times Of The Rio Grande, Todd Condie, Dr. John Bennion
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Eight years ago I moved to west Texas. In fact, I moved about as far west in the state of Texas as one can get. The housing plots adjacent to my own are bisected by the interstate border with New Mexico. Not forty yards beyond that invisible line of demarcation, the Rio Grande, itself a border-to-be, flows serenely through fields of knee-high grasses.
Sarcasm In The Bible: Old Testament Prophets And The Unbridled Tongue, Leanna Kowallis, Dr. Steven Walker
Sarcasm In The Bible: Old Testament Prophets And The Unbridled Tongue, Leanna Kowallis, Dr. Steven Walker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Studying the Bible as literature, as opposed to studying it solely as scripture, opens up many insights into the meaning of the text. These insights are gained by viewing the text through different lenses, one of which is humor, and more specifically, sarcasm. Whether they are blatant or subtle, sarcastic remarks are found throughout the Bible in many different anecdotes and personalities. Although it is commonly believed that humor and sarcasm have no place in scripture, I believe they do have value as tools to understanding what is happening in the text.

Making Thai Literature Available To The English Speaking Audience: Translating Ganokpong Songsomphan’S Stories From Thai To English, Lewis Jones, Dr. Alma Keith Lawrence
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Currently many readers are beginning to turn to translated literature to add some spice to their readings. Magazines such as Harper’s and The New Yorker are publishing more and more translated literature as the demand for it continues to grow. Much of the translated literature which is published is Asian literature; however, it is mainly Chinese and Japanese literature which is currently being translated. When I searched online to find the Thai literature available, I was disappointed to find that it consisted mainly of cook books. I thought that the Asian literature audience, if given the chance, would appreciate Thai …

The Impact Of Latino Folklore On The Future Of American Culture, Sally M. Giles, Dr. Trenton Hickman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
A wide variety of nationalities have come together in this country to create what we now call American culture. As any culture develops, the folklore that is passed down from one generation to the next, in the form of stories and anecdotes, plays a vital role. Recently, Latinos have become the largest minority group in the United States, and rising. In order to understand the future of American culture, we must examine the stories that Latinos are currently passing down to their children.
Metatheatrical Gender: The Empowerment Of Female Roles In Renaissance Theater, Elisa Clements, Dr. Gideon O. Burton
Metatheatrical Gender: The Empowerment Of Female Roles In Renaissance Theater, Elisa Clements, Dr. Gideon O. Burton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Discussions about women in our 21st century era when awareness of feminist issues is intensified ultimately boil down to questions of identity and roles. The different roles that women play, the hats that they wear on a daily basis and trade regularly for other hats, require different things of them–a different performance in each role. Tradition, society, culture, and religion each influence their performance and their script. Why do they wear these multiple hats and what do these shifting costumes indicate about their true identities? In a situation similar to our modernday focus on women, during the English Renaissance questions …

Each of these homepage items links to a separate page on the site. On each page we discuss, in …
Analysis Of Transitional Effects Of World War Ii On French Military And Civilians, Mark Ellis, Dr. Marc Olivier
Analysis Of Transitional Effects Of World War Ii On French Military And Civilians, Mark Ellis, Dr. Marc Olivier
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Second World War has captured the attention of every generation. As historians try to recount exactly what happened during this major turning point in western civilization, the value of primary narratives has become apparent. The voices that experienced World War II have much to say that can not be found in text books, and their generation is quickly disappearing.

First of all, I must say that it was a great honor and privilege to receive the ORCA award and the opportunity to set off on my own academic journey. I was able to work with two of my greatest loves—film and Russia. In the journey, however, I also had to deal with the darker sides of their characters—those of bureaucracy and escapist entertainment.
Humanitarian Art Project For The Orphans Of Minsk, Belarus, Julie Bean, Robert Barrett
Humanitarian Art Project For The Orphans Of Minsk, Belarus, Julie Bean, Robert Barrett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Through consulting with Brother Dick Ogden at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Humanitarian Center in Salt Lake City, a plan was developed to aid the orphans of Minsk, Belarus. The atmosphere and housing conditions of the Minsk orphanage are grayed by years of neglect. It was concluded that several paintings would greatly improve the atmosphere and enjoyment for the children of the orphanage.
Art And Politics: The Provenance Of Phillip Lord Wharton, David Amott, Dr. Mark Magelby
Art And Politics: The Provenance Of Phillip Lord Wharton, David Amott, Dr. Mark Magelby
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Throughout history, art has often been closely tied to politics, although not all governments and politicians have given art equal consideration. This fact is illustrated through the provenance of Sir Anthony Van Dyck’s portrait of Phillip, Lord Wharton (1632, National Gallery of Art). Since its completion, this portrait has traveled between the collections of politicians representing four major forms of government: parliamentary monarchy, autocratic monarchy, communism, and capitalism, and has acquired a history that illustrates how the visual arts have often been regarded by these forms of government. Additionally, the history of Phillip, Lord Wharton is important because it reveals …

The Weeping Wuntzel Tree, Jeffrey A. Goodsell, Brian Christensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
For this show, my work started out being a look at life, and the places we struggle to attain to, but I quickly found out that my work is more about beauty than anything. I feel that the project was very successful indeed because not only was I able to create a large body of 32 pieces for the show, but I learned some things about my work and myself that I didn’t realize before. I realized that my work, rather than being successfully narrative at this point, lends itself to more formal aspects. While I was trying to build …

Costume Designs For The Play “Plea”, Merrilee Allred, Richard Hull
Journal of Undergraduate Research
What seems to ever plague humanity throughout the ages is the plight of man – the classic search of self and truth. It seems that every one of us must go through this individually, manifest in several different ways and at different times. What remains the same in all of us, however, is that we are all looking for acceptance from others and self as well as answers to why life is difficult and why there is pain. As members of the gospel we have answers to many of these questions but this does not stop us from hurting nor …

Images Of Earth And The Human Form, Heather Heiner, Pat Debenham
Journal of Undergraduate Research
There is much beauty in the natural world that leaves me, as a dancer, stimulated with choreographic ideas. It was through the collaborative medium of dance and photography that I sought to share those experiences with others. I traveled with three other dancers from the BYU dance department and a photographer, Erin Holmberg, to Arches National Park, where we explored the connections and similarities between the human form and the elements of the natural environment. The visual aspect of the experience was captured through photography. We utilized the environment on both a large and small scale, with some improvisations being …

Music Cataloging: The Compositions Of Murray Boren, Darrell L. Brown, Dr. Brian Harker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Murray Boren is the composer-in-residence at Brigham Young University as well as a professor of musical composition and theory. He studied composition at BYU as an undergraduate and did graduate work at BYU and City University of New York. He is a composer who has generated many works and is respected by his colleges. I have had association with Professor Boren, and because of that association, my peers have often asked why access to Professor Boren’s compositions is non-existent—why recordings of the performances are difficult to find and the scores unobtainable. Premieres of Professor Boren’s compositions are regular on the …
Communicating Hope Through Music In Ukraine, Alisha Ard, Dr. Daniel Bachelder
Communicating Hope Through Music In Ukraine, Alisha Ard, Dr. Daniel Bachelder
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Recently celebrating the ten-year anniversary of its independence, Ukraine is a country that for those ten years has been plagued with the need for drastic social and economic reform. The people are desperate for the freedoms a word like “independence” promises, but the opportunities just don’t seem to exist for many. Discouragement sets in followed shortly by apathy, and soon they are faced with a close relative of the chicken and the egg conundrum: do people lack ambition because there are no opportunities, or are there no opportunities because the people lack ambition. While I do not offer an answer …
Photographic Processes In Printmaking, Todd Chilton, Gary Barton
Photographic Processes In Printmaking, Todd Chilton, Gary Barton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The advent of photography brought about a change in the world of art. Many artists felt that they no longer needed to adhere to academic standards in rendering traditional subjects such as the figure, landscape, or still life. They even felt that it was necessary to separate their work from the confining standards of the academy and representation. Art and photography resided in entirely separate and unique worlds. In the last half of the twentieth century, photography and the other art mediums began to merge and compliment each other as forms of expression. Artists have explored techniques for incorporating photographic …
