Perspectives On The Interdisciplinary Cultural Study Of Comics And Comic Books: An Apology For Superheroes, Eric J. Ehlers, Dr. Dale Pratt

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Comic books are burdened with a poor public image, both within and without academic circles. Altering this perception has seemed a Herculean task, and taking on this chore has demonstrated quite a few errors in my thinking on the subject.

Computer-Animated Agent In The Virtual Room As A Learning And Teaching Tool, Fabian Fulda, Dr. Randall Lund Jan 2014

Computer-Animated Agent In The Virtual Room As A Learning And Teaching Tool, Fabian Fulda, Dr. Randall Lund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Many people have difficulty learning foreign languages, especially when it comes to pronouncing words and phrases exactly.1 A 3-dimesional animated agent, in this case a computer animation which models the motions of important instruments of speech, can be an effective tool for teaching and learning how to pronounce desired words and phrases exactly.

Tonga, Sunnie Bybee, Joseph Ostraff Jan 2014

Tonga, Sunnie Bybee, Joseph Ostraff

Journal of Undergraduate Research

To whom it may concern, I’m writing to report on the results of my research and ORCA grant project. As my proposal explained, I was asked to participate in a project involving children’s artwork from Tonga by my professor, Joseph Ostraff. This project involved traveling to Tonga and living there for three months. I traveled with a group of people, including my professor’s family, a couple of fellow students and a filmmaker’s family. The other two students were also involved in similar projects that involved and the culture in which we lived.

Áûòü: A Study Of Everyday Life On The Collective Farm After World War Ii, Christopher Farris Bush, Rodney Bohac Jan 2014

Áûòü: A Study Of Everyday Life On The Collective Farm After World War Ii, Christopher Farris Bush, Rodney Bohac

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Collective farms in the Soviet Union have always been enigmatic. Stalin’s initiative to collectivize the peasants in 1930 met with heavy opposition. With heavy-handed brutality, the government put down the rebellions and forced farmers to stay on the Kolkhoz to endure the 1932-1933 famine. While this famine reached holocaust-levels of casualties, the incident has gone relatively unnoticed. With the start of World War II conditions on the collective farm worsened due to redirected funds and lack of the male workers needed to perform the rigorous labor. Rumors of Western intervention to alleviate suffering, kept the hopes of the downtrodden peasants …

Isaiah On The Web, Andrew J. Frost, Dr. Victor L. Ludlow Jan 2014

Isaiah On The Web, Andrew J. Frost, Dr. Victor L. Ludlow

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project began as a class assignment for Dr. Ludlow’s Writings of Isaiah class. One of the sections that I found most helpful in Dr. Ludlow’s class was the section on poetic parallelism. Dr. Ludlow identifies a visual symbol of each of seven types of parallelism used by Isaiah. As my semester project, I wrote a stand-alone computer tutorial that taught each form of parallelism using the visual symbols given in class. The tutorial also included a self-quiz to assess the user s mastery of the subject matter. At the end of the semester, Dr. Ludlow approached me with the …

Tutoring Techniques In Online Vs. Face-To-Face Environments, Melissa Helquist, Dr. Beverly Zimmerman Jan 2014

Tutoring Techniques In Online Vs. Face-To-Face Environments, Melissa Helquist, Dr. Beverly Zimmerman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Online tutoring is a commonly used, but rarely evaluated, pedagogical extension of the traditional campus writing center. Online tutoring moves one-on-one student/ tutor conferences from a familiar face-to-face environment to the less familiar environment of the Internet (via email, chatrooms, MOOs, etc.) I conducted a qualitative study, observing over the course of a semester the workings of UVSC’s online tutorial system. I initially planned to focus on the student side of the issue, to document how students were helped or hindered by tutorials in the online environment; however, because of low student involvement in my research project, my focus moved …

A Confession Of A Blonde Asian Girl, Michelle Lee Jan 2014

A Confession Of A Blonde Asian Girl, Michelle Lee

SURGE

I never realized I was an Asian.

Nor was I aware I was from South Korea.

The thought of identifying myself as Asian was redundant for I was, indeed, from Asia where Asian people lived. So when I no longer lived amongst “my own people,” I was immediately labeled, “Asian.” However, I wasn’t exactly excited about the new label. Not that I was in denial of my Asian heritage, but I didn’t comprehend people’s continuous need to point out the obvious. Yes, I am Asian, but you are only looking at a microscopic part of me. My ethnicity had no …

Increasing Awareness And Skills Regarding Ukrainian Family History, Daniel Blomberg, Thom Edlund Jan 2014

Increasing Awareness And Skills Regarding Ukrainian Family History, Daniel Blomberg, Thom Edlund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The former Russian Empire is one of the most challenging places to do family history research in the world. One of the reasons is related to the fact that the records used to locate genealogical data depend on political and ecclesiastical boundaries. For example, a Christian man living in a village without a church will be baptized, married and buried in a village different from his hometown. Thus, it is not only necessary to know one’s ancestor’s place(s) of residence, but the place(s) where he or she was civilly registered, attended religious services, was married, etc. Due to the colorful …

“…And So We Went Toward Rome (Acts 28:14):” Tracing The Final Journey Of The Apostle Paul, Matthew J. Grey, Dr. Richard Neitzel Holzapfel Jan 2014

“…And So We Went Toward Rome (Acts 28:14):” Tracing The Final Journey Of The Apostle Paul, Matthew J. Grey, Dr. Richard Neitzel Holzapfel

Journal of Undergraduate Research

After traveling the Mediterranean world for 30 years as a missionary for Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul embarked on his final journey from the port of Caesarea in ancient Judaea. Eventually his company would sail toward Italy, land in the harbor at Puteoli (just north of modern Naples), and from there travel the road to Rome. Traditionally, it was in Rome where he would spend the final years of his life “preaching the kingdom of God (Acts 28:31)” and eventually be martyred for the cause of Christ. Interestingly enough, the scriptural account in Acts 28 offers less than five verses …

Reactivation And Retention In Missionary Work For The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints From 1830-1844, Hollie J. Pollan, Dr. John Livingstone Jan 2014

Reactivation And Retention In Missionary Work For The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints From 1830-1844, Hollie J. Pollan, Dr. John Livingstone

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Reactivation and retention of members and converts plays an enormous role in the duties of LDS missionaries today. Modern prophets have stressed the need to retain new members through a calling, a friend, and hearing the good word of God. Dozens of hours a week are allotted for reactivation of less active members in missions around the world. It is an essential part of member and missionary work for the Church.

John F. Boynton: Forgotten Apostle, Wendy Woodfield, Dr. Alex Baugh Jan 2014

John F. Boynton: Forgotten Apostle, Wendy Woodfield, Dr. Alex Baugh

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Brigham Young, Parley P. Pratt, and nearly all of the original twelve apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are familiar names in the homes of many church members. Their memories have lived on to our day through the many publications of church historians. However, one of these original church leaders seems to have faded from memory due to a lack of information. John F. Boynton also served as one of the original twelve apostles, impacted the lives of early church leaders, and was an outstanding advocate for the church during his years of missionary service. Andrew …

Maya Embedded Language For Artists: An Introduction, James M. Hales, Dr. R. Brent Adams Jan 2014

Maya Embedded Language For Artists: An Introduction, James M. Hales, Dr. R. Brent Adams

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Maya Embedded Language (MEL) is a powerful programming tool for Maya, the leading 3D modeling and animation software produced by AliasWavefront. It has been used by the top motion picture companies in the makings of major blockbuster films such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Toy Story I and II, and Monsters Inc. MEL is further fundamental in other areas such as architecture, commercials, computer gaming, and broadcast media. This programming language provides an open architecture format for Maya. This means artists, programmers, and directors are not limited by the existing functions of a software program and can instead create …

The Correlation Between Religiosity And Education In Mexico, Mark Williams, Janel Williams, Dr. Keith Wilson Jan 2014

The Correlation Between Religiosity And Education In Mexico, Mark Williams, Janel Williams, Dr. Keith Wilson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A common concern for religious leaders for centuries has been the effect of education on religious devotion. During medieval times in Europe, leaders of the Catholic Church found that secular education was not compatible with church doctrines, and they strongly discouraged church members from studying works outside of the canonized church literature. The worries of the Catholic Church are still a reality today. Several modern-day studies, including a 1982 study done by Princeton University among Americans of several different religions, have found a negative correlation between education level and religious devotion: as education level increased among adults, religious devotion and …

The Law Of Consecration: A Painted Perspective, Jared Miller, Dr. Dennis Wright Jan 2014

The Law Of Consecration: A Painted Perspective, Jared Miller, Dr. Dennis Wright

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As a requirement for salvation, Christ’s life and teachings illuminate the key principles in the law of consecration, providing the roadmap requisite in obedience to the spirit and letter of consecration. While nothing can supplant these teachings, art throughout time has served as a supplementary tool allowing the viewer to take a new pictorial perspective to these concepts. This project consists of five paintings and a number of studies dealing with the law of consecration and the separate aspects of the law. Brigham Young pointed out three principles he saw essential in truly consecrating ones life to God. The first …

Saints At War: History Of The Church In Vietnam, 1965-1975, Matthew Gardner, Dr. Dennis Wright Jan 2014

Saints At War: History Of The Church In Vietnam, 1965-1975, Matthew Gardner, Dr. Dennis Wright

Journal of Undergraduate Research

How does the Lord view participation in something as controversial as war? In scriptural history, we read that He supports the righteous through added strength, prosperity, and oftentimes, victory. The Lord’s followers often fought due to the commandments of God, whereas today’s wars are fought for political reasons. While “History of the Church in Vietnam, 1965-1975” does not focus on the Lord’s opinion on war, it does show how He uses it as a tool to carry on his work. As Joseph Smith said: “Armies may assemble . . . but the truth of God will go forth, boldly, nobly, …

The “Sideward Glance”: Double-Voiced Discourse In The Tempest, Joel W. Darrington, Dr. Joseph Parry Jan 2014

The “Sideward Glance”: Double-Voiced Discourse In The Tempest, Joel W. Darrington, Dr. Joseph Parry

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Mikhail Mikhailovich (M. M.) Bakhtin is increasingly becoming one of the important literary theorists of our century. Writing in Stalinist Russia in the first half of this century, Bakhtin has come out of obscurity in the last twenty or so years to a place of prominence. His literary theories are broad and diverse. One dimension to his theories stood out to me as being particularly useful to any reading of Shakespeare. Bakhtin, while writing about the novel, articulated the nature of “double-voiced discourse”&that is, discourse which anticipates, incorporates, and is penetrated by the discourse of others, words “with a sideward …

B.F.A. Photography Show: A Quest For Eve, Val Brinkerhoff, Christina Domingues

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With the contribution of the Undergraduate ORCA Scholarship, the B.F.A. Photography show, “A Quest for Eve”, was created and presented for public viewing April 1st through the 14th, in the Harris Fine Arts Center. The show was also displayed in the photography department in the Brimhall Building for May and June. The ten framed still lifes and portraits, displayed with quotes, an artist’s statement, and comment book, depict the values and emotions gained throughout the development of a child into a young woman. In a world where innocence and purity are slowly being substituted for quite lesser values, it was …

Crossing The Ocean: Identifying The Origins Of British Emigrant Ancestors, Nathan W. Murphy, Dr. Cynthia Doxey

Historical sources available only in the British Isles greatly facilitated research on my Highley family and BYU’s British Emigrants Project. The experience convinced me to pursue a graduate degree at an English university.

English Emigration: A Sample Of Unpublished Emigration Records From England And Scotland, Emily Wilbur, Dr. Cynthia Doxey

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Unfortunately, finding our ancestors is not an easy task. It takes expertise and training, as well as informative sources. One of the biggest barriers to family historians is migration. Getting individuals and families across the oceans and to their place of origin often seems impossible. There are currently only a few resources which economically facilitate emigration research.

The Council House As A House For Sacred Ordinances In The Early Church, Gil Bradshaw, Dr. Fred E. Woods Jan 2014

The Council House As A House For Sacred Ordinances In The Early Church, Gil Bradshaw, Dr. Fred E. Woods

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With no available temples wherein they could perform their endowments, early Saints performed endowments for the living in various other places. For example, when Church members first entered the Salt Lake valley, their early endowments were performed on top of Ensign Peak. This was a special exception for missionaries returning from the South Pacific who missed the Nauvoo era completely1. For this paper I concentrated on the Council House as a similar temple substitute. Though not a temple, between its construction in 1850 and its eventual destruction in 1883, the Council House on Temple Square served as Utah’s first established …
