Cancer: A Portrait Of Survival, Angela Pierce, John Telford
Cancer: A Portrait Of Survival, Angela Pierce, John Telford
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My essay is a photographic exploration into the personal strength of people who are winning the fight against Cancer. Different from most images of cancer which evoke feelings of helplessness and pity, I wanted to show cancer as a disease that can be beaten, to show survivors who are stronger for their experience. To show people who have come away with stronger character, no matter what their age or experience. I tried to show a broad cross section of ages and philosophies since cancer affects all varieties of people. These portraits were taken on locations that showed something about the …

At Our Crossroads, Jocelyn Lockhart, Jennie Creer-King
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Dance is a unique art form in that it utilizes body movement to express ideas beyond the capacity of the spoken or written word. My project was to choreograph a ballet that explored some of the many transitions faced in life. I chose this subject because, although everyone does not undergo the same transitions, we all experience times of change in our lives. It is a universal subject that we can all relate to. Transitions are times that force us to define who we are, what we are doing, and where we are going. They are moments where we stand …
Gerard Manley Hopkins And Old English Poetic Compounds, Ryan Christensen, Dr. Don Chapman
Gerard Manley Hopkins And Old English Poetic Compounds, Ryan Christensen, Dr. Don Chapman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
It has become almost commonplace to assume a strong connection between the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, a Victorian poet, and the Old English tradition. Hopkins himself noted similarities, as have critics from the year his poems were first published. One aspect of Hopkins’ style that has often been assumed to be similar to Old English is his use of compound words. Because compound words are such a noticeable feature both of Hopkins’ work and of the Old English poems, many have implied that Hopkins’ compounds are somehow derivative of their Old English counterparts.
The Pompeian Building Complex Of 55 B. C. In The Campus Martius, Rebecca Allen, Dr. Roger Macfarlane
The Pompeian Building Complex Of 55 B. C. In The Campus Martius, Rebecca Allen, Dr. Roger Macfarlane
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The period of the late Roman Republic (ca. 80 B. C. to 44 B. C.) is the best documented of all the historical periods of Roman history. The age is characterized by intense struggles for political dominance among the leading politicians and generals of Rome, as well as a flowering of artistic and creative output. Cicero, the statesman and orator, provides much information about this period through his speeches and, more important, his letters to a variety of recipients. It is one of these letters where the research for this project began. In 55 B. C., Cicero wrote a letter …
God’S Youngest Son: A Novel Of The Taiping Rebellion, Adam H. Greenwood, Dr. Chris Crowe
God’S Youngest Son: A Novel Of The Taiping Rebellion, Adam H. Greenwood, Dr. Chris Crowe
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Taiping, a native Chinese Christian movement and rebellion in the 1850s and 1860s, had prophecy, polygamy, and wanted to set up God’s kingdom here on the earth. These positions earned them the opposition of China’s missionaries and colonial powers, not to mention that of their own government, the Manchu Imperial dynasty.

Viola Project Report, Tyler Hokanson, Dr. Claudine Bigelow
Journal of Undergraduate Research
William Primrose, eminent performer, pedagogue, and proponent of the viola, spent his last few years at Brigham Young University. Mr. Primrose was a colleague and former teacher of David Dalton, who was at that time professor of viola at the university. Because of Primrose’s close connection to Dalton, Primrose bequeathed many of his personal viola-related materials to the university in order to from an archive. This archive, named the Primrose International Viola Archive (or PIVA), is now the largest and most complete of its kind. It contains scores, recordings, memorabilia, and instructional materials relating to the viola.

I sometimes fall into patterns where I continue to make art even though I’m not really interested in what I’m doing, simply going through the motions of art making. I generally find my way out of these slumps when I re-examine what is important to me, what my curiosities are, and what simply sounds fun to do. The ORCA grant I received allowed me to begin exploring the relationship between art, space, and sound. These dimensions are an area in art that I have always been passionate about. Working on this project has given me a new direction for my …
Kant On The Nature Of Geometry, James B. Gibson Jr., Dr. Michael Arts
Kant On The Nature Of Geometry, James B. Gibson Jr., Dr. Michael Arts
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In the Critique of Pure Reason, Immanuel Kant develops an account of geometry which rests upon his central claim about metaphysics: that we see the world not as it may be independent of our perceiving it, but as an object of our sensible intuition. Thus, in order to understand our world, we must not only attempt to examine the world, but we must also examine the lens of our intuition, by which we perceive the world:

The Kierkegaardian Intervention: An Alternative Therapeutic Approach Emphasizing Agency, Brooke Bentley, Dr. C. Terry Warner
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Kierkegaard, the Danish, Christian, Existentialist of the 19th century is not only a philosopher, but also a psychologist. Kierkegaard’s interactions and responses to his audiences reveal a complex view of human freedom or agency that has far-reaching implications for psychotherapy. The assumptions about what it means to be a human being associated with this view differ radically from the traditionally naturalistic assumptions of psychology, which include ideas such as determinism and hedonism.1 Moreover, he does not restrict himself to writing about human conduct; he intends his writing to intervene therapeutically into the life of the reader in order to invite …
Health Awareness In Mozambique: Prevailing Misconceptions Of Malaria, Aids, And Cholera, Kendall Burr, Dr. Willis Fails
Health Awareness In Mozambique: Prevailing Misconceptions Of Malaria, Aids, And Cholera, Kendall Burr, Dr. Willis Fails
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Mozambicans only partially understand the nature of malaria, AIDS, and cholera, and I attempted to identify the major misconceptions they have regarding these three diseases. Their perceptions of how they are contracted, avoided, and treated are critically important to health awareness educators in the growing effort to combat these diseases. I found as my project progressed that my hypothesis—that there are several major misconceptions prevalent in Mozambique about these sicknesses—was not as significant a factor as a general ignorance and complete lack of understanding. The problem is not that they have incorrect perceptions of how to avoid and identify these …
The Voice Behind The Crown: Gender And Power In The Literary Legacy Of Maria Theresia, Elizabeth Mcfarland, Dr. Michelle Scott James
The Voice Behind The Crown: Gender And Power In The Literary Legacy Of Maria Theresia, Elizabeth Mcfarland, Dr. Michelle Scott James
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As one of the most powerful and charismatic leaders of Enlightenment-era Europe, Maria Theresia von Habsburg is well-known for her widespread political and social reforms and for her skillful political maneuvering which centralized the disintegrating Austrian Empire and led to a golden age of education, commerce, art, and science. Despite Maria Theresia’s influential position vis-à-vis European philosophy, political theory and aesthetics, this amazing woman is known only through second-hand histories of the Habsburgs.
A Choreographic Medley Of Latin American Dances, Divina Teruel Wakefield, Cathy Black
A Choreographic Medley Of Latin American Dances, Divina Teruel Wakefield, Cathy Black
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Dance productions often involve several different numbers or dances. A single number in a production is usually created with one selection of music. Everything else such as the style, mood, and theme relate to the music. When a medley or suite of dances are arranged in a single number, the components become much more complicated.

In my ORCA project, my aim was to create a contemporary ballet piece for the BYU Theater Ballet Dance Company that would then be performed and judicated at the ACDF (American College Dance Festival) choreography competition and art festival in New Mexico, March 2001. I have focused on four major areas of choreography, experimenting with a.) dance form and movement (dance choreography), b.) lighting, film and costume (scenery), c.) music, and d.) the whole piece as a work of art.
Dramatic Elements In The Seminary/Institute Classroom, Daniel P. Stowell, George Nelson
Dramatic Elements In The Seminary/Institute Classroom, Daniel P. Stowell, George Nelson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Gordon B. Hinckley, current president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, recently stated, “The schooling of our spirits is as important as the schooling of our minds, if not more important”(67). Hinckley here underlines the importance and reason for this study. Religious studies should have all the benefits dramatic elements provide. The purpose of this research project is to explore the possible effects of infusing theatrical or dramatic elements in the Seminary/Institute classroom. I have observed classes, interviewed a number of teachers, and researched the elements of theatre I thought the most pertinent to this portion of …
The Development Of Student Creativity Through A Comprehensive Art Curriculum, Robin Shinsel Jorgensen, Donna Kay Beattie
The Development Of Student Creativity Through A Comprehensive Art Curriculum, Robin Shinsel Jorgensen, Donna Kay Beattie
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My purpose in designing a comprehensive art curriculum is an attempt to elicit and foster creative thinking, and creative art production. This project was inspired by two months that I spent in China and Thailand studying their art education system. I observed their techniques, based mostly on repeating the styles of old masters, and concluded that their style of teaching produces great technical artists, but these students also lack creative direction. Upon reflection of my studies abroad, I realized that my education in art was not vastly different from the methods used in the Pacific rim. A contemporary, creativity based …
Community House, Katie Campbell Rojas, Gary Barton
Community House, Katie Campbell Rojas, Gary Barton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Community House was a concept created to artistically represent individuals within a community. It was proposed that a group of 20 students and 2 professors would construct a house made up of 22 individual rooms. Furthermore, the house could easily be disassembled so that each artist might render his/her room personally. Although many doubted the completion of the structure, it was constructed by the deadline.

Post-Colonial Interpretations Of Role Reversal As Illustrated In Le Radeau De La Meduse By Theodore Gericault, Megan Kramer Collins, Dr. Martha Peacock
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Art historians employ various methodologies in analyzing works of art. Most commonly scholars take a socio-cultural/historical approach to understand the works. We all admit that no work of art was created in a vacuum. In studying the circumstances surrounding the culture and history of the artist, we can more fully understand the meaning of the artwork, and vice versa. Art, as a means of expression, can be seen as a historical document to help in understanding history and culture. Through studying the life and experiences of the artist as well as their influences, we can better understand both the statements …

Rain On The River, Risd Museum, Fritz Drury

George Bellows was critically acclaimed for the frank, even brutal manner of the urban landscapes he painted in the early years of the twentieth century. His view from a rockly ledge above Riverside Park surveys a freight train making its way along the New York Central’s famous Water Level Route. The string of railcars echoes the rushing diagonal that marks the near bank of the Hudson River. Aggressive brushstrokes indicate reflective surfaces that are animated by graphic observations: a lone pedestrian scurries acros a rain-slicked path, and a horse-drawn cart awaits a delivery of scavenged coal. Bellows called Rain on …
