Violin Concerto #1, Matthew J. Holman Apr 2013

Violin Concerto #1, Matthew J. Holman

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

This piece is a violin concerto modeled after, but not explicitly quoting melodic material of, several pieces of music by composers Bear McCreary, and Martin O’Donnell. The first and third movements of my piece were each modeled after two of Bear McCreary’s pieces from the soundtrack to Battlestar Galactica Season 2 – Allegro, and Prelude to War, respectively. The second movement of my piece was modeled after Martin O’Donnell’s piece Ashes, from the soundtrack to Halo: Reach.

Although I model my piece on the formal structures and, occasionally, the chord progressions of McCreary’s and O’Donnell’s pieces, …

Conservation And Digitalization Of Byu Papyri, Parchments, Lamella And Ostraca, Dr. Lincoln Blumell

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In January 2011 I received a MEG in the amount of $20,000 to conserve and digitalize BYU’s ancient papyri, parchments, lamellae and Ostraca that are housed in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections Library. I am very pleased to report that this project was a success. During the course of the MEG my team and I were able to clean and conserve most of the papyri and parchment fragments, which were written in Greek, Coptic and Arabic, as well as take high resolution digital images of the pieces so that they can be studied outside of Special Collections.

The Gods Who Speak In Many Voices, And In None: African Novelists On Indigenous And Colonial Religion, John C. Hawley Apr 2013

The Gods Who Speak In Many Voices, And In None: African Novelists On Indigenous And Colonial Religion, John C. Hawley

English

The subject of this essay, then, is the enduring spiritualities of Africa (including "imports"), their varying levels of success in meeting the challenges of engagement with non-African cultures, and, particularly, the manifestations of these encounters in a representative sampling of its fiction. In the first wave of novels in English and French, African religion typically loses out to Christianity and Islam in much the same process that village economies fail before railroads and missionary schools. In more recent fiction, more worldly-wise Africans (whether as characters of novels, or as writers of those novels who have been educated abroad) turn a …

Dark Town's Wealth: A 150-Year-Old Rock-And-Roll Concert Review, John M. Rudy Apr 2013

Dark Town's Wealth: A 150-Year-Old Rock-And-Roll Concert Review, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

I have a lot of odd things scattered around my house, weird ephemera and bric-a-brac that I've picked up here and there as I've studied history.

Some of them are treasures, like CDVs of long-dead College professors and original pieces of decking from the USS North Carolina. Some are less treasures and more, well, junk. Most folks toss old newspapers within a few days of reading. In the Civil War Era, I'm sure many a page of newsprint went to start an honest mother's hearth in the morning or a pile of moist kindling in some godforsaken camp. [excerpt …

Editor-In-Chief Of The Laureate, Andrea Walker

Honors Theses

The Laureate is an undergraduate literary journal that is distributed by the Lee Honors College (LHC) of Western Michigan University. It accepts submissions from all undergraduate students from Western. In fall 2012, I was selected as editor-in-chief of this operation with Becky Cooper as my faculty advisor. My first task was to create a team of assistant editors. The LHC and Sigma Tau Delta sent out emails that let students know of this opportunity. I interviewed several applicants before selecting three assistants. My next task was to create flyers let students know how to submit. I created the flyers myself …

Threshold, Alexandria Knipe Apr 2013

Threshold, Alexandria Knipe

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

My decisions in the studio are tied to my experiences outside of the studio, intertwining the complex relationship of memory and sentience. Each work precariously balances between softness and rigidity, vessel and sculpture, monumentality and intimacy. These tensions transform the familiar into the enigmatic and are an integral part of my philosophical approach to making.

Soft curves and billowing planes are punctuated by the structure of defined edges, hard angles, and areas of dark shadows. This duality suggests two worlds, one of feeling, intuition, sensuality, and dreams, the other of intellect, reason, structure, form, rhythm, and geometry.

By contradicting the …
