The Organization Of American States (Oas) In Rhetoric And Reality, Elizabeth Marie Moore
The Organization Of American States (Oas) In Rhetoric And Reality, Elizabeth Marie Moore
Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity
The purpose of this study is to examine how well the countries in the Western Hemisphere translate Organization of American States’ (OAS) resolutions into actual meaningful legislation, and how international discourse influences, or does not, domestic policy. This study will utilize the data program QDA Miner in order to better analyze texts of agreements and treaties put forth by the OAS, and to highlight the correlation between different types of rhetoric and meaningful member state action. Data will be gathered primarily from the OAS’ own data bases and compiled into the QDA software for analysis. This analysis will allow the …

"I Nevertheless Am A Historian": Digital Historical Practice And Malpractice Around Black Confederate Soldiers, Leslie Madsen-Brooks
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
I have a good deal of interest in how members of the public who are not academically trained historians "do history." For me, then, "public history" does not mean just projects, programs, and exhibits created by professional historians for the public, but rather the very broad and complex intersection of "the public" with historical practice. Provision those occupying this intersection with freely available digital tools and platforms, and things become interesting quickly. Because setting up a blog, wiki, or discussion forum means only a few mouse clicks, and archival resources are increasingly digitized, we are seeing a burgeoning of sites …
The Power Of Dara Puspita: How Four Girls From Indonesia Brought Rock ‘N’ Roll To The World, Eliza Summerlin
The Power Of Dara Puspita: How Four Girls From Indonesia Brought Rock ‘N’ Roll To The World, Eliza Summerlin
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Surrounded by her ever-growing vinyl collection, twenty-year-old Ingga is sprawled on her bedroom floor with her ear pressed closely to a small transistor radio. An announcement on RRI (Radio Republik Indonesia) has caught her attention, but she fears she misheard the DJ. Could it be true? Are they finally coming home? She is in disbelief, but indeed the famed all-female Rock ‘n’ Roll band Dara Puspita is scheduled to play two shows in Jakarta in just a few weeks. A smile flashes across her face. Her heroes have returned.
After what seems like eternity, it is finally the night of …
Prettiest In Pink? Dutch Teenage Girls And Femininity, Leah Allen
Prettiest In Pink? Dutch Teenage Girls And Femininity, Leah Allen
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This report is the result of a month-long qualitative examination of the various attitudes held by Dutch teenage girls on feminine behavior and presentation. Background research included examining work written about Dutch women and Dutch teen girl culture, as well as analyzing two Dutch teen magazines, Meiden and Girlz. I interviewed five Dutch girls from the ages of 13 to 17 about the acceptability and prevalence of femininity and “girliness” among them and their peers. I concluded that these Dutch girls believe that it is most acceptable for a girl to act in a certain way based on her gender: …

Spain: Language, Community, and Social Change
The idea for this project came from many influences. Firstly, my deep love for language has been one of the sole motivators for this project. From a very early age, I grew an appreciation for learning other languages. I was always fascinated by words and expressions. Learning how to say something in another language was like learning a secret code for me. My studies of the Spanish language only fomented my passion for learning. Having been abroad for a year, first in Madrid and now in Granada, I have realized the deep connection between language, culture and society. One can …

Musical Linguistics: How Music And Artistic Creativity When Delivered As A Linguistic Practice, Help Students Master Academic Skills In English Language Arts, Cynthyny Ann Lebo
Theses Digitization Project
This Masters project consists of two elements: 1) an integrated after-school program to improve student English language reading and academic outcomes for third graders' vocabulary development by incorporating music, artistic creativity and linguistics; 2) a pilot sample curriculum that demonstrates the approach for building student comprehension through musical theater and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) content experiences. Called "Water Buddy", this is an after-school program uses singing, dancing, writing, and play to build reading and vocabulary skills. The goal is to improve learner academic outcomes by mastering the elemental building blocks of words, letters, symbols by making memorable the …

American Indian Studies And The Politics Of Educational Colonialism, Kathleen J. Martin, Nicole Ventre
Ethnic Studies
The politics of higher education at universities pose challenges for Native and Indigenous students that impact equity and equality, and the teaching and learning process. The most recent challenge: Native Studies Departments are no longer necessary as an academic discipline. This paper calls into question the right to education and future success and achievement in scholarship that increases knowledge for all peoples in the future. However, higher education institutions are still “working on deconstructing colonialism” with less attention to the enduring marginalization of disempowered peoples as campuses continue struggle with issues of inclusion, budgetary crises, and the minimizing of scholarship. …

Exploring The Significance Of Social Class Identity Performance In The English Classroom: A Case Study Analysis Of A Literature Circle Discussion, Amanda Haertling Thein, Megan Guise, Deann Long Sloan
English
English educators at all levels have endeavored to understand difference in their classrooms both in terms of the content that they teach and in terms of the social and cultural identities of students in their classrooms. However, although educators have come a long way in understanding identity as it is constituted by race and gender, much work is needed for social class identity to be understood with nuance and complexity. This article explores the salience of class identity as it affects one aspect of learning in the English classroom--literary interpretation. Specifically, this article draws on data from a six-week literature …

Locating Royce's Reasoning On Race, Marilyn Fischer
Philosophy Faculty Publications
In the fall 2009 issue of The Pluralist, Tommy Curry and Dwayne Tunstall challenged the current, dominant view of Royce as an antiracist. In "Royce, Racism, and the Colonial Ideal," Curry presents Royce as a white supremacist, an admirer of British colonialism, and an advocate of black assimilation to Anglo-Saxon cultural practices (14-15). Tunstall, in "Josiah Royce's 'Enlightened' Antiblack Racism?," presents Royce as a non-essentialist regarding race, yet as a cultural antiblack racist, with a colonial attitude comparable to that held by John Stuart Mill (Tunstall 40). In the same issue of The Pluralist, Jacquelyn Kegley analyzes Royce's …

The Rhetoric Of The Modern Hijab., Mihret Woldesemait
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The goal of this research is to obtain data about the rhetoric of the modern hijab. This research wants to prove that the hijab is dynamic and not static by looking at the new styles of the hijab in Amman, Jordan. It wants to disprove the idea that the hijab is one of the many examples of the outdated practices of the hijab. The study has three hypothesis:(1) the hijab is dynamic and not static, and it has changed in style because of modernization and westernization. (2) The new styles of the hijab are not absolutely religious. (3) Lastly it …

The Current Status Of Maternal Health In Samoa: Maternal Health Perspectives According To Professionals And Women, Yesenia Pedro Vicente
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Countries that face pressure to develop at a rapid pace under the western model must adapt to social change and adopt new policies that will secure their well-being. In an attempt to guide these countries, the United Nations has established the Millennium Development Goals as a framework for national development. The United Nations recognizes the importance of improving maternal health and has established it as one of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) agreed to by member states. Samoa has agreed to these Goals and is said to be “on track” for improving maternal health by the year 2015. This …

The Vacb Model In Hòa An Village And Xeo Trâm Hamlet: Comparison And Analysis Through A Gendered Lens, Alyssa Bosold
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Burning fuel-wood, a method of traditional cooking practiced by half of all homes in Vietnam (Global Alliance for Clean Cook-stoves 2012) and the majority of homes in Hòa An Village and Xeo Trâm Hamlet, has significant negative consequences in terms of environmental and personal health. In Hòa An Village and Xeo Trâm Hamlet, as is true in much of Vietnam, gender roles dictate that women should be primarily responsible for household chores like cooking (World Bank 2001, Nguyen 2012, Nguyen 2012, Vo 2012). This means that women must often deal directly with the environmental dangers and safety hazards of woodstoves. …
“Diversity Is Our Daily Bread”: An Exploratory Study Of The Dutch ‘Sexual Diversity In Education’ Policy, Alex Sirotzki
“Diversity Is Our Daily Bread”: An Exploratory Study Of The Dutch ‘Sexual Diversity In Education’ Policy, Alex Sirotzki
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This independent study project focuses on the discourse surrounding the recently-approved ‘sexual diversity within education’ policy, which requires all schools in The Netherlands to incorporate discussion of sexual diversity into their curricula. My findings are based on six interviews of individuals who, either directly or indirectly, are connected to or affected by this policy, either in their professional work or simply in their interests. My findings include themes found surrounding the policy: what is being said, how sexual diversity should be implemented in schools, autonomy of schools, normalcy, potential racism within policy implementation, and what should be done. Ideas for …
