Dao De Qin: A Case Study Of The Guqin, Dashiell H. Nathanson Apr 2012

Dao De Qin: A Case Study Of The Guqin, Dashiell H. Nathanson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This is a case study of the guqin that enables the reader to understand the multifaceted history, construction, technique, and ideology behind the instrument. I use my online research of different well-informed sites and scholarly articles as a basis for my research. These different sources allowed me to begin to understand the depth that this ancient zither holds. I quote such sources throughout this essay as they have been written in a very articulated fashion. Through these readings, I was able to interpret my field research regarding the guqin more clearly. My nonstop study of the guqin in this three-week …

An Austrian Identity Crisis: Conservative Thought, Political Posters, And Questions Of National Identity During The First Republic., Meyer Weinshel Apr 2012

An Austrian Identity Crisis: Conservative Thought, Political Posters, And Questions Of National Identity During The First Republic., Meyer Weinshel

German and Russian Studies Honors Projects

The political writings of Karl Lueger and Georg Ritter von Schönerer, the founders of the Austrian Christian Social and German National Parties, shaped the right-wing political discourse regarding national identity after the Austro-Hungarian Ausgleich in 1867. As Habsburg hegemony in Central Europe crumbled after the First World War, this conservative political discourse concerning Austrian identity was resurrected in the political posters of the Austrian First Republic. Through an examination of Christian Social and German National constructions of national identity in both pre- and post-World War I Austria, this paper seeks to determine the role that conservative constructions of Austrian National …

17th Century French Philosphy, Benedikt I. Gottwald Apr 2012

17th Century French Philosphy, Benedikt I. Gottwald

Student Foreign Language Research

Benedikt Gottwald

17th-century French Philosophy: The main parameters of the decades long debate between Nicolas Malebranche and Antoine Arnauld, in specific the nature of ideas and the controversy on grace and freedom. (Dates of research: 23rd January 2012 – 16th April 2012)

If faith and reason do not contradict one another, as Nicolas Malebranche claims, we need to either completely separate the two as disciples of philosophy and theology, or we can furthermore follow Malebranche in talking about a coherent body of philosophical theology. The great philosophical debate between Nicolas Malebranche and Antoine Arnauld, which was …

Illuminating The Infelice: Defiance And Transcendence In The 19th Century Operatic Madwoman, Claire Biringer Apr 2012

Illuminating The Infelice: Defiance And Transcendence In The 19th Century Operatic Madwoman, Claire Biringer

Music Honors Projects

The female protagonist’s mad scene, since coming into true vogue in the early nineteenth-century Italian opera tradition, has been prized for its dramatic and poignant emotive qualities. This project explores four nineteenth-century mad scenes; Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor (1835), Bellini’s I Puritani (1835), Meyerbeer’s Dinorah (1859), and Verdi’s Macbeth (1847), surveying the literature of each scene and providing formal analysis of musical attributes such as harmony, melodic structure, and formal design, all in comparison to generic operatic conventions. Musical elements generally associated with the operatic madwoman include the orchestral recollection of significant past themes, virtuosic coloratura lines, and the presence …

Leather Whips And Rapier Wit: Observations On Sadomasochists And The World They Have Created, Samantha Ann Roberg Apr 2012

Leather Whips And Rapier Wit: Observations On Sadomasochists And The World They Have Created, Samantha Ann Roberg

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

What kind of world is the kink and fetish community? Is it a deep, dark, devilish abyss splattered with bodily fluids, coursing with gyrating bodies stomping out its heartbeat? Polite society seemingly thinks so. Bondage, and even worse, sadomasochism are portrayed by today's television and media as satanic and evil, not what love between a man and woman should be. In today's day and age, love is no longer limited to just one man or one woman, but still seems only appropriately hidden away behind closed doors, hidden from parents or children, a dirty act until marriage. What happens when …

Acts Of Kindness, Demetria Hayman Apr 2012

Acts Of Kindness, Demetria Hayman

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

I believe that for every evil act, there is a kind one. When I’m home, away from my college life in Rhode Island, I usually wake up and lazily watch the news for a half hour and drink a few cups of coffee. Usually the news is a depressing way to start the day, but often there is a short story about something miraculous or cheerful, like when a soldier receives a purple heart or when someone vows to dedicate her life to community service.

Lo Personal Es Político: La Lucha Por La Legalización Del Aborto En Chile, A Través De La Organización Feminista, Católicas Por El Derecho A Decidir, Gavin Odabashian

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper investigates the work of a small collective of women—Católicas por el Derecho a Decidir—and the practice of their activism in Valparaíso, Chile. I focus on the ways in which these women are strategically mobilizing as an organization to fight for justice for women in Chile—more specifically, for gender equality, access to reproductive rights, and the legalization of abortion in all cases. I examine the history of the organization, its form and structure, the projects and campaigns they are currently working on, the individual experiences of the women working within the organization, their perspectives on their work, …

The Interaction Of Wolof And French In Dakarois Families: A Specific Look At Ouakam Households, Ashlee Sang Apr 2012

The Interaction Of Wolof And French In Dakarois Families: A Specific Look At Ouakam Households, Ashlee Sang

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this study was to show the unique multilingual situation in Dakar, which manifests itself most frequently with a mixture of Wolof and French use. By using the neighborhood of Ouakam as an indicator of Dakar as a whole, one can see the immense impact of both Wolof and French in family settings. More importantly, the interaction of Wolof and French in Ouakam households is used as a lens to show the social impact language has on families in Dakar.

Capitalizing Art: The Marketing Of Senegalese Bronze Sculpture, Julia Mears Embry Apr 2012

Capitalizing Art: The Marketing Of Senegalese Bronze Sculpture, Julia Mears Embry

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Bronze sculpture is an art form that, while it did not originate in Senegal, has been a part of the culture for centuries. Unfortunately, since the number of people producing it is so much smaller than for other media, a great deal of the market for bronze, and its support, has come from Westerners. Although there is broad difference between foreign buyers commissioning pieces and tourists buying from small shops in Dakar, both groups have historically impacted the bronze trade. For my project, I sought to learn more about the production of bronze sculpture through creating my own pieces in …

The Life Of A Child: Learning, Imitating, And Interacting Among Children In The Northern And Ashanti Regions, Annie Alexander Apr 2012

The Life Of A Child: Learning, Imitating, And Interacting Among Children In The Northern And Ashanti Regions, Annie Alexander

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

During the time of independent study, I split my time between the Northern and Ashanti Regions. I lived in a village by the name of Gumo outside of Tamale and in the Ashanti Region; I stayed in Benim located near Ashanti Mampong. While my home was in each respective village, I traveled to surrounding areas to expand the scope of my research and provide conclusive evidence. I spent my time among the children observing, learning, and recording their interactions. Living in the village gave me the chance to experience the daily lives and actions of the children. Using participant and …

Progression Of Aesthetic: A Study Of Beads And Adornment In Contemporary Krobo Society, Jordan Ashe Apr 2012

Progression Of Aesthetic: A Study Of Beads And Adornment In Contemporary Krobo Society, Jordan Ashe

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

  1. Methodology: To gain insight into the role of bead heritage and adornment in Krobo, I spent 18 days in Krobo-Nyaso, learning how to make recycled glass beads called giga, and observing the use of beads in daily life and ceremonious occasions. I observed one wedding ceremony and parts of a Dipo ceremony, though I was unable to attend a naming ceremony or funeral. To gain insight into contemporary bead culture, I interviewed Krobos of all ages, occupations, and social ranks, including one bead vendor, two bead makers, two chiefs, one priest, and four Krobo women. I also sought …

Whose Gay Town Is Cape Town? An Examination Of Cape Town’S Gay Village And The Production Of A Queer White Patriarchy., Mollie Beebe

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

My ISP works to illuminate the diversity of LGBTQI experiences and lives in Cape Town. I do this through discussing the privilege necessary to "come out" in Cape Town and, subsequently, have access to The Pink Village, Cape Town's gay district. By Bringing in theory on "coming out" as a white experience and the queer movement as re-centering white normativity, I work to openly discuss how a history of exclusion has lived on in Cape Town's gay district and pushed the more marginalized gay communities out of the city center. Through academic research, participant observation in both the gay village …
