When Time Stops, Andrew Mathas May 2012

When Time Stops, Andrew Mathas

All Theses

This creative thesis is a collection of three short stories centered on exploring modern war and military life in Afghanistan. This collection engages in questions of truth, death, and what it means to live on the fringe of a modern warzone. War is a test of the human condition on both soldiers and civilians, the results of which are often impossible to comprehend. In examining that kind of an environment, I am giving voice to stories often forgotten or overlooked during war — stories that need to be heard if we are to have any hope of understanding our actions …

To Live, To Love, To Labor: Challenging The Rigidity Of The Public And Private Spheres, Mallory Neil May 2012

To Live, To Love, To Labor: Challenging The Rigidity Of The Public And Private Spheres, Mallory Neil

All Theses

JŸrgen Habermas's bourgeois public sphere theory led many historians to adopt new categories of social divisions. More specifically, gender historians utilized the theory in order to explain the exclusion of women from the political realm. Imparting male and female classifications onto the public and private spheres, in turn, led to the claim of complete social immobility for women. In the 1990s and 2000s, however, gender historians began to question the rigidity of the gendered spheres. This study adopts this line of argument by looking at the lives of Madame de Sta‘l, George Sand, and Lucie Aubrac. These women present three …

Architecture As Drawing: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew Arkell May 2012

Architecture As Drawing: Representational Space Architecturally Transformed, Andrew Arkell

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis project was motivated by the premise that a drawing could take on architectural meaning beyond its initial performance as a re-presentation of an architectural idea. Initially, there existed the goal to create a drawing that was architecture. In the creation of a process wherein the drawing is the research, however, there comes an understanding that a drawing may never be literal architecture; although, the means by which the drawing is created might be architectural, or at the very least, speak to ideals which are fundamental to the creation, to the process, of architecture itself.

Fateful Lightning: A New History Of The Civil War And Reconstruction, Allen C. Guelzo May 2012

Fateful Lightning: A New History Of The Civil War And Reconstruction, Allen C. Guelzo

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

The Civil War is the greatest trauma ever experienced by the American nation, a four-year paroxysm of violence that left in its wake more than 600,000 dead, more than 2 million refugees, and the destruction (in modern dollars) of more than $700 billion in property. The war also sparked some of the most heroic moments in American history and enshrined a galaxy of American heroes. Above all, it permanently ended the practice of slavery and proved, in an age of resurgent monarchies, that a liberal democracy could survive the most frightful of challenges.

In Fateful Lightning, two-time Lincoln Prize-winning …

Stingray : An Exploration Into The Art And Craft Of Playwriting, Samantha Liguori May 2012

Stingray : An Exploration Into The Art And Craft Of Playwriting, Samantha Liguori

HIM 1990-2015

Cloud Nine by Carol Churchill is a good example of non-linear play structure. Episodic plays are part of an even more disjointed time structure. There are both many different locations and characters in an episodic play; it is similar to a film script for that matter. Onstage, this was a revolution; how can a person be in one city and then the next shortly after? This was the rule of continuity that episodic structure broke. Bertolt Brecht did this throughout his movement in epic theatre, and traces of this structure can also be found as early back as Medieval plays. …

Cold War Rivalry And The Perception Of The American West: Why Both Westerners And Easterners Became Cowboys And Indians, Pawel Goral May 2012

Cold War Rivalry And The Perception Of The American West: Why Both Westerners And Easterners Became Cowboys And Indians, Pawel Goral

History Dissertations - Archive

As the competing ideologies of the Cold War became crucial components of the rivalry, cultural influences gained symbolic power as well. American popular culture had such a tremendous impact upon Europe that the states of the communist bloc denounced it as cultural imperialism. The Western, combined with cultural power and cultural beliefs, analyzed here as a major cold war weapon of influence, contributes to an understanding of transatlantic intercultural transfer, best illustrated by the production of German Westerns between 1962 and 1983. This dissertation demonstrates how the adversaries of the Cold War endeavored to create two distinct and unique German …

The Promethean, Volume 20, Bring On The Buzzards, 2012, English Department, Concordia University-Portland

The Promethean

Every year, the staff of The Promethean has the same goals. We want to create a bold journal full of quality literature and artwork. We want to push the limits of both our contributors and our readers. We want to create a memorable journal that Concordia University-Portland can be proud of.

This year, we decided to accomplish these goals by going back to our roots. We decided that we would use the story of Prometheus, our journal's namesake, as our inspiration. Prometheus was a god who saw that humans needed fire to survive. Against the will of the other gods, …

Designing An "Information-Experience" Using Creativity Science Theory And Tools, Stephanie Belhomme

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

An “information-experience” encapsulated by a technological/digital audio-visual tool presents data and potentially meaningful information to prompt actionable knowledge concerning: “unspoken creative process elements;” their profound impacts on both how well our “physiology of creativity” functions; but also on how well foundational creative thinking and behavioral prerequisites (energy, motivation, imagination, and ownership) are leveraged.

The product: 1) introduces the user to one component of the CPS (Creative Problem Solving) Facilitation Process - Exploring the Challenge; 2) features a content specific component which prompts exploration of the many correlations between societal, organizational / community, human physiological / behavioral data, and the direct …

Note on the Paul Query Prize portfolio published throughout this edition:

  1. Currently I'm working on an extended work titled, "Immunity." Right now I’m immersed in it. It started with my Grandmother, Holly, falling in a bed of poison ivy when she was pregnant, which led to my father's immunity to it. Yet it has evolved into so much more—a mythological tale about who I call ‘The Holy Field," and how and who it …

Measuring Legal Fictions: Law And Sovereignty In Measure For Measure, James Funk May 2012

Measuring Legal Fictions: Law And Sovereignty In Measure For Measure, James Funk

All Theses

In this paper I argue that Shakespeare's Measure for Measure interrogates the performativity inherent in the exercise of law and sovereignty, ultimately revealing that internal contradictions within the early modern political system create the possibility for change. At the level of plot, the substitution of Angelo for the supposedly absent Duke highlights the impossibility of the law's attempt to personify justice. The same issue reveals itself in how one reads the text; there are two ways, for example, to interpret the Duke's declaration near the end of the play that there is 'more behind that is more gratulate': the temporally …

"Threads Of Belief", Erum S. Javed May 2012

"Threads Of Belief", Erum S. Javed

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

As the needle pierces the fabric, the thread finds its way. As the needle lays its rhythmic path, the thread follows the needle, creating a specific sound and pattern. The needle and the thread together create something new or mend something old. As an artist I have found my direction, and sensitivity, the same as the thread that finds its way by filling and tying the spaces between other threads in the fabric. As I draw the point through every stitch, I am drawing a thought, a moment, an expression from past and present. I seek a thread, a theme, …
