Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Marais Des Cygnes, John Michael Orr
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis documents the concept, process, installation, and specific pieces in my Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, Marais des Cygnes. The Marais des Cygnes is a river in southeast Kansas and western Missouri, near a Bleeding Kansas-era massacre site of the same name. The river is notorious for flash flooding, was named by French explorers and translates to Marsh of the Swans. The work is about a fictional wandering car thief and alcoholic named Vernon, the bad guy in my novel. Vernon is obsessed with the distant past, particularly the time before the Louisiana Purchase and the Louisiana of …
Pixel; Ghost, John Christopher Kelley
Pixel; Ghost, John Christopher Kelley
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Pixel; Ghost is an exhibition of video and sound installations that explore the creation, change, and degradation of memory, transitional states of mind, and family. The pieces are structured around cinematic clichés such as dream sequences, flashbacks and establishing shots, using them as a language to translate personal experience into something more universal.
In my work, Pixel refers to the individually active component of a larger system. A pixel itself changes and has its own characteristics, though these are ultimately subservient to its role in the larger system of a screen. The purpose and meaning of a pixel comes not …
Spiral Installation, Mauricio Alfredo Linares-Aguilar
Spiral Installation, Mauricio Alfredo Linares-Aguilar
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Spiral is a site-specific gallery installation. Simplicity and subtleness are the goals for this installation. It shapes a spiral from above, and is meant to be experienced by walking through it. It has four different elements: one white cotton scrim, 71 feet long by 9 feet high, one cotton scrim 15 feet long by 9 feet high, a direct wall print, and outside natural air. The piece is made of materials such as cotton fabric, casein, bleach and Arkansas yellow oxide clay.
The intent of Spiral Installation is to convey the idea of the flowing process of life and death …
Dessert, Glenna Worrell
Dessert, Glenna Worrell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
From an early age craft played a major role in my development as a person and as an artist. The traditional 1950s-70s crafts such as quilting, knitting, and sewing as performed by my mother began to influence me as a child and are now what I draw upon in my artwork. This thesis exhibition addresses my future role as a nurturer and how it relates to my relationship with my mother. It is my way of forming a connection with the rich history of craft and that of the studio potter. I draw inspiration from historical and contemporary ceramics, the …
The Production Of Choreography Influenced By Works Of George Balanchine, Tiffany Guy
The Production Of Choreography Influenced By Works Of George Balanchine, Tiffany Guy
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
One of the most renowned Ballet Masters in the history of dance is George Balanchine. By studying his works and feedback from his dancers, my goal is to gain enough information to develop a two to three minute choreographed work of my own, incorporating the influence of Balanchine’s style and design. In my research, I will be examining his history and the interviews of Balanchine-influenced dancers, reflecting on personal experiences, and dissecting his choreography and elements of my own work in creating my final choreography. Within my piece, I will be manipulating various uses of rhythms, implementing Balanchine-style movements, and …

Care Of The Self, Foucauldian Ethics, And Contemporary Subjectivity, Christopher J. Menihan
Care Of The Self, Foucauldian Ethics, And Contemporary Subjectivity, Christopher J. Menihan
Senior Honors Projects
Through studying literature, literary theory, and poststructural philosophy within the English Department and Honors Program, I have learned to critically analyze texts and other media. Narratives, objects, and situations are so often other than what they appear to be, greater than what they offer through the first read, and are thus always in need of further analysis. Our lives, societies, and even our own subjectivities are no exception. Not only is what we observe and believe not as simple as it seems, but often what we regard as “true” may actually be far less stable than what that label denotes. …
Thinking Through Ethics: The Processes Of Ethical Decisionmaking By Novice And Expert American Sign Language Interpreters, Elizabeth Mendoza
Thinking Through Ethics: The Processes Of Ethical Decisionmaking By Novice And Expert American Sign Language Interpreters, Elizabeth Mendoza
International Journal of Interpreter Education
In the course of their work, interpreters face ethical dilemmas that require prioritizing competing moral beliefs and views on professional practice. Although several decision-making models exist, little research has been done on how interpreters learn to identify and make ethical decisions. Through surveys and interviews on ethical decision making, the author investigated how expert and novice American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters discuss their ethical decision-making processes and prioritize prima facie duties, or meta-ethical principles (Ross, 1930/2002). The survey participants included 225 novice interpreters with 3 or fewer years of experience as nationally certified interpreters and 168 expert interpreters with 10 …

Saint John Fisher Is Irish, Tim Madigan
Verbum
In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.
"St. John Fisher College has just launched an Irish Studies Program, of which I have been named the first Director. In conjunction with this, I have endeavored to find out as many Irish-related connections that already exist (such as courses presently being offered relating to Irish culture, history and literature), and also what future projects might be feasible for the program, including study abroad possibilities for students and faculty exchanges. Imagine my joy when I learned that the namesake of our college is himself a good Irishman!"

"Spoiler alert: If you have not yet seen the movie “Enchanted April,” I’m going to tell you how it ends. Rent and watch it anyway. Lushly filmed with the compelling and capable actors Jim Broadbent and Joan Plowright, among others, it is one of those rare movies that stay with you long after the final credits roll."

You Are Some Other Thing, Victoria Hoyt
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
There is only one book I reread on a regular basis. Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson, published in 1980, is a story about drifting and loss and longing, of women existing in the world in an uneasy, awkward way. The idea of living in a house is foreign to the transient Aunt Sylvie and when she suddenly has to take care of her nieces, she manages to bring all her homeless habits indoors. She eats in the dark and sleeps on top of her covers and throws rocks at the neighbors’ dogs. My favorite is her collection of tin cans and …

Time And Fortune, Tiffany C. Anderson
Time And Fortune, Tiffany C. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Time and Fortune, a graphic novel script, takes the true story of John Harrison’s competition for the longitude prize, as told by Dava Sobel, and seeks the changes that could have culminated had Harrison sought other avenues for his product. Considering his judge was his competitor, if Harrison made a secret copy of H-4, a watch that accurately holds the time from homeport, and gave it to a sailor invested in its success, naval military power could have changed today’s world as we know it. Imagining that John Harrison changed one small decision in his life, this storyline sets a …

Evocative Communication: Selected Projects In Projection, Scenic, And Lighting Design, Milinda Esplin Weeks
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
I didn’t always want to be a theatrical designer. As a child, I wanted to be a ballerina, an artist, a teacher. My answer to, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” changed ever time someone asked me the question. Though I didn’t understand it a the time, what I wanted was to affect people. I wanted my work to create emotion and thought.
I found that reaction in the theater. Here was a small circle of people who were entirely codependent upon each other to create one large piece of art, all in the hopes of …

Convergence, Megan R. Mitchell
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Fences, doors and windows indicate a point of intersection between inside and outside, public and private. These porous boundaries provide enclosure while also allowing access to an outside world. I am drawn to these divisions in space both as aesthetic and metaphorical objects. They are the point of departure for an exploration of the intersection between real and imagined worlds.
I am fascinated by the ways that my brain filters and interprets the outside world, which then takes root in dreams and the imagination. Certain structures and landscapes hold a specific symbolic power; while completely inanimate, they seem to mirror …
Maidens, Matrons, And Magicians : Women And Personal Ritual Power In Late Antique Egypt., Meghan Paalz Mcginnis
Maidens, Matrons, And Magicians : Women And Personal Ritual Power In Late Antique Egypt., Meghan Paalz Mcginnis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to a variety of material, textual, and literary evidence, the aim of this thesis is to shed light on the realities – rather than stereotypes -- of an important aspect of late ancient women’s experience: the use of ritual power. Patterns of gender differentiation in late antique Egyptian magic are investigated and shown to be connected to the particular aims to which numinous powers were employed, aims which were in turn bound up with the social roles expected of each sex. The majority of this study consists of a series of case studies of different types …
Song Of The Wind, Aaron B. Bittman
Song Of The Wind, Aaron B. Bittman
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
Song of the Wind is an original cantata for contralto soloist, chorus, and chamber orchestra. More similar to Carmina Burana than a cantata such as those written by J. S. Bach, musical influences were drawn from such diverse sources as Greek Orthodox chant, minimalism, and New Age popular music. The story of Song of the Wind is drawn from a number of different texts, mostly Eastern and Mid-Eastern in origin, but European texts are represented as well. These texts span a period of time between 3,000 years before the Common Era and the Renaissance, and also include newly written verse. …
The Impact Of Vowels On Pitch Finding And Intonation In The Movable-Do Solmization System, Thomas Neuerburg
The Impact Of Vowels On Pitch Finding And Intonation In The Movable-Do Solmization System, Thomas Neuerburg
Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances
The modern movable-Do solmization system based on syllables devised by Guido d'Arezzo was modified and pieced together over centuries by various scholars and pedagogues, each with their own rationale. To date, considerations of the movable-Do system have not sufficiently examined the effects of the vowels contained within its solfège syllables. While vowels have been thoroughly analyzed among vocal pedagogues, that information has not been adequately transferred to the realm of aural theory. Individual vowels contain perceptual qualities and intonational tendencies, due to their physiological articulation and acoustic properties. This document relates vowel characteristics with the solfège syllables used in the …
The Royal Monastery Of Tsuklakhang – A Buddhist Jewel, Katharine Louise James
The Royal Monastery Of Tsuklakhang – A Buddhist Jewel, Katharine Louise James
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Originating in India, Buddhism has spread throughout the world, eventually developing into two main branches known as Theravada and Mayahana. Within these two branches, Buddhism has further diversified its teachings with the establishment of numerous schools, each promoting their own sutras with different approaches to enlightenment. One such sect is Tibetan Buddhism, which has disseminated beyond the political boundaries of Tibet, promoting its teachings in parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim. Sikkimese monastic structures evolved from and within the practice of Tibetan Buddhism, while simultaneously incorporating the indigenous living cultures of the Sikkimese local people. The royal monastery of …

Fort Brown, Jeannie Marie Floyd
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This is a collection of four short stories and three essays with a critical introduction. The people in these stories, both fiction and non-fiction, are all on the fringes of society. They are experiencing financial ruin, emotional turmoil, sickness, mental instability and other struggles. This material is an examination of their lives and the alternately humorous and tragic attempts of coping with their circumstances. Some of the pieces are related to the shrimping industry in the Port of Brownsville, one is about prostitution in Mexico, still others are about social misfits in California and other parts of the country. But …
Copyright’S Creative Hierarchy In The Performing Arts, Michael W. Carroll
Copyright’S Creative Hierarchy In The Performing Arts, Michael W. Carroll
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Copyright law grants authors certain rights of creative control over their works. This Article argues that these rights of creative control are too strong when applied to the performing arts because they fail to take account of the mutual dependence between writers and performers to fully realize the work in performance. This failure is particularly problematic in cases in which the author of a source work, such as a play or a choreographic work, imposes content-based restrictions on how a third party may render the work in performance. This Article then explores how Congress might craft a statutory license to …

Don't Take Orpheus Without The Lyre: The Intricacies Of Using Pagan Myths For Christian Purposes In The Divine Comedy And Paradise Lost, Rebekah J. Waltmann
Don't Take Orpheus Without The Lyre: The Intricacies Of Using Pagan Myths For Christian Purposes In The Divine Comedy And Paradise Lost, Rebekah J. Waltmann
Masters Theses
Because of their universal and artistic nature, the classical myths lend themselves well to use in literature, especially poetry. When used properly, as by Dante and Milton, the myths have the ability to enhance the work; when used poorly, they become gaudy ornamentation. It was, and is, this ability to enhance both the artistry and function of literature that pulled so many poets to the myths, despite the difficulties that could arise when the pagan myths did not quite match the Christian setting. My purpose in this thesis is not to explicate every use of myth within The Divine Comedy …
Linden Hills And The Women Of Brewster Place : Race, Class, And Gender Seen Through The Gothic, Nicole Marie Riotto
Linden Hills And The Women Of Brewster Place : Race, Class, And Gender Seen Through The Gothic, Nicole Marie Riotto
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Gloria Naylor uses Gothic elements in two of her novels, Linden Hills and The Women of Brewster Place, to highlight struggles and fears of the black communities of these texts. In each, the characters try to navigate through a white, patriarchal world, which causes them to struggle economically, emotionally, and socially. Throughout reading these texts, it is clear that Naylor uses the sins of the father, the absent mother/fear of motherhood, and religion versus the state/science, all Gothic elements, to show how these characters are put in the position of other and how they respond to occupying that space.
Each …
