Frontier, Displacement, And Mobility In Joss Whedon's Firefly, Emma Leigh Boone Nelson May 2012

Frontier, Displacement, And Mobility In Joss Whedon's Firefly, Emma Leigh Boone Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Firefly, a television series created, written, and directed by Joss Whedon, premiered on the Fox network in 2002 and aired only eleven episodes before it was cancelled halfway through its first season. While it gained some on-air popularity, it was not until fans convinced Fox via online chatrooms to release the series on DVD that it gained posthumous acclaim. Whedon credits westerns as the inspiration for Firefly because frontier characters tend to be natural, flawed, complex human beings who question universal truths through widely recognized motifs of classic westerns. In a February 17, 2011 Entertainment Weekly interview, Firefly actor …

On The Design Of Socially-Aware Distributed Systems, Nicolas Kourtellis May 2012

On The Design Of Socially-Aware Distributed Systems, Nicolas Kourtellis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Social media services and applications enable billions of users to share an unprecedented amount of social information, which is further augmented by location and collocation information from mobile phones, and can be aggregated to provide an accurate digital representation of the social world. This dissertation argues that extracted social knowledge from this wealth of information can be embedded in the design of novel distributed, socially-aware applications and services, consequently improving system response time, availability and resilience to attacks, and reducing system overhead. To support this thesis, two research avenues are explored.

First, this dissertation presents Prometheus, a socially-aware peer-to-peer service …

4th And Goal: What Is The Interpretive Touchdown?, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

What is the aim of historic interpretation? That seems like it would be a simple question to answer, but it's simply not. Historic interpretation seems to be a many headed Hydra, with each interpreter seeing their own purpose and their own goals within the craft. [excerpt]

Writing La Mestiza: Creating A New Chicana Identity In Sandra Cisneros' The House On Mango Street And Woman Hollering Creek, Amber Lea Strother May 2012

Writing La Mestiza: Creating A New Chicana Identity In Sandra Cisneros' The House On Mango Street And Woman Hollering Creek, Amber Lea Strother

Student Theses and Dissertations

Chicana identity is shaped not only by individual development, but also by the homes, communities, and cultures in which that development takes place. This examination of Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street and Woman Hollering Creek illustrates the influences of class, gender, and ethnicity on the negotiation of multicultural identity formation. These two works demonstrate the maturation process that moves the Chicana experience from the individual to the communal. By revising traditional Chicana models, Cisneros demonstrates that a new Chicana identity or la mestiza, one that provides Chicanas with a positive role model, can be created.

Student Teaching Band Arrangement, Whitney Mensink May 2012

Student Teaching Band Arrangement, Whitney Mensink

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

As a future music educator, I have learned how to teach students through various courses and instruction. During the last semester of my undergraduate, I am required to student teach. This gives me an opportunity to apply everything I’ve learned to see if it really works, and what my particular teaching style and philosophy is. At Sky View High School, I had the opportunity to teach the Sophomore Concert Band. For my thesis project, I decided to arrange a piece just for them – to rehearse with them and to score it to the strengths of the ensemble. Since I …

Surface Mass Transfer In Large Eddy Simulation (Les) Of Langmuir Turbulence, Cigdem Akan May 2012

Surface Mass Transfer In Large Eddy Simulation (Les) Of Langmuir Turbulence, Cigdem Akan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Over the past century the study of gas exchange rates between the atmosphere and the ocean has received increased attention because of concern about the fate of greenhouse gases such as CO2 released into the atmosphere. Of interest is the oceanic uptake of CO2 in shallow water coastal regions as biological productivity in these regions is on average about three times larger than in the open ocean. It is well-known that in the absence of breaking surface waves, the water side turbulence controls gas transfer of sparingly soluble gases such as CO2 from the air to the …

The Ecological Role Of Rhizophytic Green Algae In Soft-Bottom Habitats, Laura Bedinger May 2012

The Ecological Role Of Rhizophytic Green Algae In Soft-Bottom Habitats, Laura Bedinger

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Rhizophytic algae are large, abundant primary producers throughout tropical and subtropical areas worldwide where they grow as an understory in seagrass beds, as well as form mixed or monospecific beds of exclusively rhizophytic algal species. In this dissertation, "rhizophytic algae" refers to coenocytic green algae (Chlorophyta) in the order Bryopsidales that use a net of rhizoids to anchor in unconsolidated sediments. In the development of seagrass beds, rhizophytic algae colonize bare patches and are thought to facilitate seagrass colonization by stabilizing sediments and providing organic matter. However, despite their prominence little is known about many aspects of the ecology of …

Aplicación De La Teoría De La Imagen A Pinturas Surrealistas Españolas Durante La Guerra Civil Española, Jordan Kirkegaard

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

El autor W.J.H.B. Sandberg mencionó que: "Great artists by sorne hidden direction assemble where life is most intense, where a new world is about to be born. They come together to shape a new world."

Oral Histories

David Fernandez is a part-time music teacher for the WHEDco music school. Additionally, he has also worked as a professional musician and as crisis para-professional in the New York City Public School system. Mr. Fernandez believes that the traditional manner of teaching students music theory is not always the best one; instead, he teaches them in a manner that permits them to actively learn the concept at hand.

Mr. Fernandez was born in Brooklyn, but moved to Youngstown, Ohio, during his childhood. He was musically exposed in his household, as his father was a backup performer to several major artists …

Stepping Into The World Of The Vocal Coach: Assessing Vocal Coaching Needs, Renina Hoblitz May 2012

Stepping Into The World Of The Vocal Coach: Assessing Vocal Coaching Needs, Renina Hoblitz

Theses and Dissertations

There are many excellent books detailing methods to help actors develop their voices, but not much has been published about vocal coaching itself, apart from the definitive guide to Vocal Coaching Nan-Withers Wilson’s book Vocal Direction for the Theatre, and the highly informative publication How to Use a Vocal Coach: A Practical Guide for Directors prepared by Nancy Houfek, for the Voice and Speech Trainer’s Association (VASTA). This thesis documents my personal journey into the world of vocal coaching in five productions. Specifically, I explore the differences between vocal coaching in the university setting versus the professional theatre setting. I …

Wronskian, Grammian And Pfaffian Solutions To Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, Alrazi Abdeljabbar May 2012

Wronskian, Grammian And Pfaffian Solutions To Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations, Alrazi Abdeljabbar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

It is significantly important to search for exact soliton solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) of mathematical physics. Transforming nonlinear PDEs into bilinear forms using the Hirota differential operators enables us to apply the Wronskian and Pfaffian techniques to search for exact solutions for a (3+1)-dimensional generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation with not only constant coefficients but also variable coefficients under a certain constraint

Perceived Firm Transparency: Scale And Model Development, Jennifer Dapko May 2012

Perceived Firm Transparency: Scale And Model Development, Jennifer Dapko

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the last few years alone, calls for transparency by consumers have grown louder. No longer are consumers willing to sit back and allow firms to make `closed door' decisions that benefit the company (and its executives) at the expense of consumers and society. This dissertation begins to answer the call for a greater understanding of transparency from both practitioner and academic perspectives. In particular, this dissertation focuses on systematically developing a succinct definition of perceived firm transparency, developing a valid measure of transparency, and empirically testing antecedents and consequences of transparency.

Two studies were conducted to develop the transparency …
