Remnant Motif In Amos, Micah And Zephaniah, Alison Lo
Remnant Motif In Amos, Micah And Zephaniah, Alison Lo
Seminary Faculty Publications
‘Remnant’ is one of the significant motifs in the Minor Prophets. This essay will examine the remnant motif in Amos, Micah and Zephaniah, seeking to find out the commonality of this concept between these three pre-exilic books. In order to facilitate this study, finding the remnant terminology helps us locate the remnant passages. In Amos the term תיראשׁ is used with reference to Israel, i.e. the ‘remnant of Joseph’ (Amos 5.15). It also refers to other peoples, like the remnant of the Philistines (Amos 1.8) and Edomites (Amos 9.12). The term תיראשׁ is used five times in Micah (Mic. 2.12; …
Free Trade, Poverty, And Inequality, Nicole Hassoun
Free Trade, Poverty, And Inequality, Nicole Hassoun
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
Anyone familiar with The Economist knows the mantra: Free trade will ameliorate poverty by increasing growth and reducing inequality. This paper suggests that problems underlying measurement of poverty, inequality, and free trade provide reason to worry about this argument. Furthermore, the paper suggests that better evidence is necessary to establish that free trade is causing inequality and poverty to fall. Experimental studies usually provide the best evidence of causation. So, the paper concludes with a call for further research into the prospects for ethically acceptable experimental testing of free trade's impact on poverty and inequality. Although the paper is unabashedly …
The Anthropocentric Advantage? Environmental Ethics And Climate Change Policy, Nicole Hassoun
The Anthropocentric Advantage? Environmental Ethics And Climate Change Policy, Nicole Hassoun
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
Environmental ethicists often criticize liberalism. For, many liberals embrace anthropocentric theories on which only humans have non-instrumental value. Environmental ethicists argue that such liberals fail to account for many things that matter or provide an ethic sufficient for addressing climate change. These critics suggest that many parts of nature -- non-human individuals, other species, ecosystems and the biosphere have a kind of value beyond what they contribute to human freedom (or other things of value). This article suggests, however, that if environmental ethics are inclusive and also entail that concern for some parts of nature does not always trump concern …

Peripheral Wonders: Nature, Knowledge, And Enlightenment In The Eighteenth~Century Orinoco: Book Review, Laura Miller
Peripheral Wonders: Nature, Knowledge, And Enlightenment In The Eighteenth~Century Orinoco: Book Review, Laura Miller
Religion in the Age of Enlightenment
Margaret R. Ewalt's Peripheral Wonders: Nature, Knowledge, and Enlightenment in the Eighteenth-Century Orinoco responds to several essential topics in eighteenth-century studies, including the connections between scientific work and socioeconomic forces, the interpenetration of colonial powers and Amerindian populations, the recasting of the Enlightenment, and the variable uses of rhetoric to address print audiences. Peripheral Wonders centers on Jesuit missionary Joseph Gumilla's El Orinoco ilustrado ( 17 41, 17 45), a natural history that offers a narrative in which Catholicism and scientific inquiry mutually engage. In El Orinoco ilustrado, natural history remains informed by religious beliefs as well as local …

Descriptions Of Old Laie, 1871-1921, Riley Moffat
Mormon Pacific Historical Society
Along with the few photographs of La’ie during the early plantation era from about 1865 to 1920, several people made verbal sketches of La’ie. La’ie and Hawai’i always have been considered exotic, and before photographs were common in newspapers, magazines and books, a verbal description was a highly developed means of sharing with readers what a place was like. It was meant to help a reader visualize a place the way we now use photographic images. We’ve all heard that a picture is worth a thousand words; here follows some examples of people using words in the place of a …

Brother Low reports, "A jack hammer was necessary to dig footing the entire length of the building except the spot where the baptismal font was designed in the plans. Considerable time and effort was spent trying to get me to relocate the building in another location rather than the one chosen by the authorities, but I refused to change the plan. Consequently, the excavating for the font was carried on by two sisters and was accomplished with ease."

The Moral Of The Story: The Power Of Narrative To Inspire And Sustain Scholarship, Amy Vorenberg
The Moral Of The Story: The Power Of Narrative To Inspire And Sustain Scholarship, Amy Vorenberg
Law Faculty Scholarship
This article describes how I discovered the power of story as a tool to inspire scholarship. We think of stories as a means to bring life to legal cases in a way that grounds them and makes them visceral and comprehensible. We use storytelling to teach our students - showing how the emotive power of a story can persuade. However, stories can also serve a different function. In my search for a way to inspire and sustain my own writing, I found out that a good story can be the source of a writer’s motivation to both create and sustain …
An Equal Rights Amendment To Make Women Human, Ann Bartow
An Equal Rights Amendment To Make Women Human, Ann Bartow
Law Faculty Scholarship
[Excerpt] “I can state with some authority that two times fourteen is twenty-eight, flouting the stereotype that women are inept at mathematics and simultaneously framing my argument in favor of an Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Though the Fourteenth Amendment' provides women with partial legal armament (a dull sword, a small shield), equal protection requires something twice as powerful in the form of a Twenty-Eighth Amendment that would expressly vest women with equal rights under the law. The Fourteenth Amendment has completed only half of the job.”

Making Music Together : A Music Handbook For An Early Childhood Classroom, Shana Hope Frankel
Making Music Together : A Music Handbook For An Early Childhood Classroom, Shana Hope Frankel
Graduate Student Independent Studies
This paper discusses the importance of music in Early Childhood classrooms. It is meant to be a resource for the classroom intended to be used by teachers, however; it can also be used by families and caregivers who want to add more music in to their homes. The songs are organized to follow a typical daily schedule in a classroom. The readers do not need background knowledge of music and can make up their own tunes to most of the songs provided. I have suggested the music to go along with most of the songs however other melodies could work …
Evangelical And Frontier Mission Perspectives On The Global Progress Of The Gospel, Beth Snodderly, A. Scott Moreau
Evangelical And Frontier Mission Perspectives On The Global Progress Of The Gospel, Beth Snodderly, A. Scott Moreau
Edinburgh Centenary Series
As we reflect on the past century, then, the stories of the evangelical world church deserve to be heard. In this volume, we do not have space to even begin to scratch the surface. Being forced to choose an orientation, we collected stories and thinking related to the way evangelicals have idealized, operationalized and organized in light of the remaining frontiers of mission.

The Cypriot Ceramic Cargo Of The Uluburun Shipwreck, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld
The Cypriot Ceramic Cargo Of The Uluburun Shipwreck, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld
Classical Studies Faculty Research
The ship that sank at Uluburun was carrying about 130 pieces of Cypriot pottery in its cargo, mostly fine bowls and juglets but also lamps and wall brackets. Some coarse-ware bowls, pitchers, kraters, and the pithoi may also have been intended as cargo. This ceramic shipment is diverse in substance and unassuming in quality. By tracing how the Cypriot vases spilled and broke apart during the shipwreck, it has been possible to determine that they were originally packed into three pithoi for transport. The odd assortment of vases suggests that this cargo was not acquired at a manufacturing center. More …
The Structure And Genesis Of Copland's Quiet City, Stanley V. Kleppinger
The Structure And Genesis Of Copland's Quiet City, Stanley V. Kleppinger
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
Aaron Copland’s Quiet City (1940), a one-movement work for trumpet, cor anglais, and strings, derives from incidental music the composer wrote for an unsuccessful and now forgotten Irwin Shaw play. This essay explores in detail the pitch structure of the concert work, suggesting dramatic parallels between the music and Shaw’s play.
The opening of the piece hinges on an anhemitonic pentatonic collection, which becomes the source of significant pitch centres for the whole composition, in that the most prominent pitch classes of each section, when taken together, replicate the collection governing the music’s first and last bars. Both this principle …

The Effect Of Powerpoint And Nongraphic Paired List Presentations On The Vocabulary Production And Recognition Of Elementary-Level College French Students, Lucie Viakinnou-Brinson, Steven P. Cole
Faculty Articles
This study investigates the effect of presenting images via PowerPoint (PPT) and nongraphic paired lists to teach vocabulary. In this study nongraphic paired list (PL) refers to a list of French words paired with their English equivalent. The study, conducted with 38 elementary-level college students, examined their recall performance for written production and visual recognition of French vocabulary words. Students were taught French vocabulary via PPT and nongraphic PL presentations. Quantitative results indicated a significant difference between participants’ mean immediate test scores favoring the PPT condition for both written production and visual recognition. The study also investigated participants’ instructional perceptions …

Recuerda Que Yo Estoy Aqui Tambien : A Bilingual Picture Book, Liliana Ivette Funes
Graduate Student Independent Studies
My independent study for my Integrative Masters consists of a bilingual (Spanish/English) picture book that is based on personal experience, and endeavors to describe the emotional distress and anxiety children can experience as second language learners entering a monolingual classroom for the first time. The book addresses not only the emotional and academic struggles of the child, but also the ways in which peers and teachers can intervene to ease the child's transition into English. Thus the book can serve as a resource to support monolingual classrooms. The study also includes a personal reflection of the process and journey, I …
Mirror-Reading Moral Issues In Paul's Letters, Nijay Gupta
Mirror-Reading Moral Issues In Paul's Letters, Nijay Gupta
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Biblical interpreters have long recognized the need to engage in mirror-reading when it comes to studying the apostle Paul’s letters, as they are ‘occasional’ writings, where an understanding of the context of the wider conversation gives insight into the proper understanding of the text’s meaning. In 1987, John Barclay made a key contribution to the practice of interpreting Paul’s letters by offering a criticism of unwieldy attempts at mirror-reading and by presenting a methodological standard for how mirror-reading can and should be carried out. While Barclay’s article has brought a helpful critical standard to the practice of mirror-reading Paul’s letters in …
