It has been said that history repeats itself because people were not paying attention the first time. The panorama of topics covered by this symposium …

Quarter Life Crisis Or How To Get Over College And Become A Functioning Member Of Society, Patrick Martin Anderson Jan 2011

Quarter Life Crisis Or How To Get Over College And Become A Functioning Member Of Society, Patrick Martin Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As a writer, I feel like dealing with conflict in real life is the best way to deal with conflict in my fiction. Quarter-Life Crisis or How to Get Over College and Become a Functioning Member of Society, while a fictional novel, is very much about many of the conflicts I‘ve experienced over the past few years. Sean Easton is a twenty-five year old college graduate living in Miami, trying to balance out his life in a world that doesn‘t make as much sense to him as it did when he first graduated college, happy and looking forward to the …

Gore's Science The Kairos Of An Inconvenient Truth And The Implications For Science Writing, Carolyn M. Glasshoff Jan 2011

Gore's Science The Kairos Of An Inconvenient Truth And The Implications For Science Writing, Carolyn M. Glasshoff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern Americans are exposed to scientific and technical information on a daily basis that urges them to react as well as learn about new ideas. The popular science writing that circulates this information must be portrayed in a way that makes it easy for lay people to understand complicated ideas while at the same time remaining complex enough to convince readers that the information is reliable, accurate, and worth learning. In making decisions about how to accomplish this balancing act, science writers make decisions that influence the audience's opinion about new scientific ideas, how easily the audience will accept or …

Half-Virgin, Alexander Gregory Pollack Jan 2011

Half-Virgin, Alexander Gregory Pollack

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Half-Virgin. (Under the direction of Jocelyn Bartkevicius) Half-Virgin is a cross-genre collection of essays, short stories, and poems about the humor, pain, and occasional glory of journeying into adulthood but not quite getting there. The works in this collection seek to create a definition of a term, “half-virgin,” that I coined in the process of writing this thesis. Among the possibilities explored are: an individual who embarks upon sexual activity for the first time and does not achieve orgasm; an individual who has reached orgasm through consensual sexual activity, but has remained uncertain about what he or she is doing; …

Using Narrative To Improve Reflection In Technical Communication, Carrie Brkich Jan 2011

Using Narrative To Improve Reflection In Technical Communication, Carrie Brkich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores why instructors should use narrative intentionally and effectively with reflection to better understand adult students' perceptions of experiential learning activities in technical communication. The frequent use of narrative in technical discourse reminds us that the tone of technical texts is often appropriately informal, personable, and reflective. A closer analysis of narratives provides instructors with valuable opportunities to learn more about the motivations for and barriers to learning for adult students and to better understand how these students situate themselves in larger social and cultural narratives. Narrative serves many purposes in technical communication. Not only does narrative add …

The Agency Of The Logos-Huios: Exploring The Influence Of Deut 18:15-22 On The Prologue Of The Fourth Gospel, Johndave C. Medina Jan 2011

The Agency Of The Logos-Huios: Exploring The Influence Of Deut 18:15-22 On The Prologue Of The Fourth Gospel, Johndave C. Medina

Seminary Masters Theses

This study explores the influence of the Jewish agency principle found in Deut 18:15–22 on the Prologue of the Fourth Gospel (John 1:1–18). Seeking to answer the question of the Prologue’s background, this study examines the scholarly treatments of agency in the Fourth Gospel, and the agency motif in both Deut 18 and the Prologue. The agency in the Fourth Gospel is similar, if not identical, to the principle of agency in Jewish law that the agent is representative of the principal in every way. This agency motif is applied to Moses as he represents YHWH to the Pharaoh and …

Does Distributive Justice Pay? Sternberg’S Compensation Ethics, Jeffrey Moriarty Jan 2011

Does Distributive Justice Pay? Sternberg’S Compensation Ethics, Jeffrey Moriarty

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Compensation has received a great deal of attention from social scientists. Characteristically, they have been concerned with the causes and effects of various compensation schemes. By contrast, few theorists have addressed the normative aspects of compensation. An exception is Elaine Sternberg, who offers in Just Business a comprehensive theory of compensation ethics. This paper critically examines her theory, and argues that the justification she gives for it fails. Its failure is instructive, however. The main argument Sternberg gives for her theory points in the direction of a different one. This, in turns, helps us to see what a justification of …

"Sit Back Down Where You Belong, In The Corner Of My Bar With Your High Heels On": The Use Of Cross-Dressing In Order To Achieve Female Agency In Shakespeare's Transvestite Comedies, Heather Lynn Wright Jan 2011

"Sit Back Down Where You Belong, In The Corner Of My Bar With Your High Heels On": The Use Of Cross-Dressing In Order To Achieve Female Agency In Shakespeare's Transvestite Comedies, Heather Lynn Wright

MA in English Theses

In taking on their male disguises, Viola (Twelfth Night ), Rosalind (As You Like It ), and Portia (The Merchant of Venice ) are able to transcend the confines of their social roles and achieve agency and voice as both females and males. With their male disguises, they gain power and agency as lower-class males and as aristocratic females. This power correlates to the fact that they are not fully male. Their female attributes, ideas, and nature (the essence of their femininity) still come through. They are limited and marginalized as women not because of their intelligence …

Seeing The World Through The Eyes Of Andries Van Aarde : Radical Inclusivity : Original Research, Glenna S. Jackson

Religion & Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

In the article the author reflected on her personal and existential experience of a journey to Egypt, and how this highlights radical inclusivity. The article focused on the issues of the violence of poverty, the history of Coptic Christianity and the role of women within this tradition. The article touched on aspects such as 'women monks', ecclesiastical hierarchy in modern Coptic Christianity, and the ordination of clergy. It also considered the perspective of 'social hierarchy' and 'spiritual or divine hierarchy'.

Notes From The Editor, Bruce Gleason

Research & Issues in Music Education

As the editorial board presents the ninth issue of Research and Issues in Music Education, I’m reminded that teaching and learning have been going on for a very long time, and that there are all kinds of ways to undertake these tasks with new ways of teaching being constantly developed—but that the musical functions with which Merriam challenged us remain as true now as they did when he published them in 1964. An examination of the variety of this issue’s topics indicates that student, teacher, composer, conductor, professor and audience member all have much at stake as we continue …

Digging Up History: How Photo-Flo And Elbow Grease Are Saving New England’S Historic Cemeteries, Edward E. Andrews Jan 2011

Digging Up History: How Photo-Flo And Elbow Grease Are Saving New England’S Historic Cemeteries, Edward E. Andrews

History & Classics Faculty Publications

Gravestones seem to be, like the memories of the people they honor, eternally immutable, intransient reminders of the lives, loves, and losses of the past. Even the substance they're made of is a metaphor for durability and permanence. And yet, as any resident of New England knows, soil moves, water erodes, tree limbs fall, frost heaves erupt, sun rays blister, roots expand, and mold advances. Constant attacks from weather, in addition to the mechanization of landscaping, conspire to destroy these stones as they once stood. Ironically, New England's historic cemeteries are dying. Fortunately, a handful of preservationists are laboring to …

God In Ocean City, New Jersey, Christine Fadden

On Earth As It Is

Sometimes, God, summer weighs on me like wet ropes. My lungs seize trying to have the most fun in the world before school starts. September is Hell and we all die and go there after Labor Day. Yesterday, I saw my English teacher stuffing her bright red face with pink cotton candy. She is supposed to be reading books all summer, not coming here—wearing her hair down and eating the same things I do. I felt like the boardwalk was going to explode one splinter at a time under my feet, even though yesterday was the kind of day my …

Dear God, Ethel Rohan

On Earth As It Is

I remember, as a girl, I could fly. I also remember You visited often. Not a luminous light, or an apparition, or anything I could hear or touch. You were a presence, a comfort, a knowing. Back then, I didn't need faith. I had certainty.

Two, Megan Mcshea Jan 2011

Two, Megan Mcshea

On Earth As It Is

Precisely this fogged window, which prevails in the cold, wet night, blinks out onto an uninhabited land of Other People?s houses and in sight of all that forgotten real estate, along with all the amiable conversations on phones across America and evenings shared in movie houses, around the corner from a recent homicide, down the block from wild lots and weeds, great unknowns, colossal, all evolving along with Darwin and his species. One?s life, assumed to be finite, ticking away. Night covers things up but you can still hear the rain.

A Functional Approach To Social Networking Sites, Erin M. Bryant, Jennifer Marmo, Artemio Ramirez Jr. Jan 2011

A Functional Approach To Social Networking Sites, Erin M. Bryant, Jennifer Marmo, Artemio Ramirez Jr.

Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research

The widespread use of social networking websites (SNSs) is one of the most groundbreaking communication trends to emerge in recent years. Since its creation in 2004, sites such as Facebook have become immensely popular among college students. Many SNSs continue to experience exponential growth. Facebook, for example, reached 100 million active users in August 2008 and proceeded to quadruple this membership base to surpass 400 million active users by July 2010 (Facebook.com). In addition to maintaining astronomically high membership rates, SNSs also appear to be part of user's daily schedules. In one study assessing Facebook use, Ellison, Heino, and Gibbs …
