Types Of Prayer And Depressive Symptoms Among Cancer Patients: The Mediating Role Of Rumination And Social Support, John E. Perez, Amy Rex Smith, Rebecca L. Norris, Katia M. Canenguez, Elizabeth F. Tracey, Susan B. Decristofaro

Psychology

We examined the association between different types of prayer and depressive symptoms—with rumination and social support as potential mediators—in a sample of predominantly White, Christian, and female ambulatory cancer patients. In a cross-sectional design, 179 adult cancer outpatients completed measures of prayer, rumination, social support, depressive symptoms, and demographic variables. Type and stage of cancer were collected from electronic medical charts. Depressive symptoms were negatively correlated with adoration prayer (r = −.15), reception prayer (r = −.17), thanksgiving prayer (r = −.29), and prayer for the well-being of others (r = −.26). In the path analysis, …

England [Medieval Music], Peter M. Lefferts Jan 2011

England [Medieval Music], Peter M. Lefferts

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

English musical life in the Middle Ages is often treated in standard textbook surveys as peripheral to that of France and Italy. This approach has several causes, but is rooted especially in musicology's preoccupation over the past 150 years of scholarship with medieval France. Noteworthy also in this negligence is the pairing of France and Italy late in the era in the emergence of polyphonic refrain songs as the chief new artefacts of secular high music culture in the 1300s, an attractive trend with no contemporary English-language counterpart. Musicology's paradigmatic narrative of English entrance onto the international stage, through its …

Compositional Trajectories [Medieval Music], Peter M. Lefferts Jan 2011

Compositional Trajectories [Medieval Music], Peter M. Lefferts

Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications

Here, to illuminate a small set of issues in respect to style and compositional practice, we will approach the medieval composer via specific repertory, namely, some sacred chants and some two-voice polyphony.

A persistent conviction of many relative newcomers to medieval music is that all chant sounds the same - melodically vague, un differentiable, hypnotic and slightly 'New Age' - and that it is governed by a universal, monolithic, standard medieval 'theory of the modes'. Neither of these points is true, but one needs to gain a broad familiarity with some very large bodies of melodies, and the histories of …

Regional Media And Its Role In Tahrir's Revolution: Comparison Between Al-Jazeera And Al-Arabiya, Alia Nabil Eshaq

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

One of the hallmarks of the Egyptian revolution was the extensive presence of different media outlets to the extent that their coverage directly affected the course of events, if not shaped them. Being a central state in the Arab world, Egypt naturally received a great attention through out the world during the revolution. The coverage of the 25 January revolution was by far more focused and extensive than that of the Tunisian revolution. Unlike the Tunisian revolution which developed gradually, the Egyptian revolution emerged since its initial stages with thousands of people marching to Tahrir Square, which is a stage …

To What Extent Is The History Of Egypt Repeating Itself?, Nouran Ghannam Jan 2011

To What Extent Is The History Of Egypt Repeating Itself?, Nouran Ghannam

Papers, Posters, and Presentations

This paper explores the question of whether the history of Egypt has been repeating itself. Throughout the past 20th century Egypt has been in a continuous cycle of revolutions and authoritarian regimes. Hence, we can never be sure whether the recent 2011 Revolution will lead to something different than the regimes we have seen in the past. Nonetheless, this recent uprising could be the first break from the cycle. First we establish what a revolution and authoritarian regime are, to make sure that this has been true of Egyptian history. We then regimes to see whether there are similarities; thus …

The Experience Of Drugs: Utopian Imagination And Virtual Community In The Rose Seller, Lizardo Herrera Jan 2011

The Experience Of Drugs: Utopian Imagination And Virtual Community In The Rose Seller, Lizardo Herrera

Modern Languages

This article explores the hallucinations and the utopian desire in The Rose Seller (1998), a movie by the Colombian director Víctor Gaviria. On the one hand, the film shows the death of the street children of Medellín-Colombia and that the surrounding world of drugs is extremely violent; thus the audience can watch how these children live in very precarious conditions and how they are forced to face death on a daily basis. On the other hand, drugs lead these children to an imaginary space where they experience their affective world intensely. I suggest that this imaginary space constitute their utopian …

Two Weeks Notice...Aloha, John L. Bove

Books

Written and published by John L. Bove, former Dean of Admissions for St. Francis College, Two Weeks Notice...Aloha documents his struggle to come to terms with his loss following the death of his wife. From its preface:

“This was originally a journal through which I sought to regain some equilibrium and understanding. The loss of Fran turned my world “topsy turvy.” I was so angry and grief stricken it threatened my health. Stress of any kind, left unchecked, attacks the immune system which inevitably leads to illness.

Writing gives you a focal point for your anger and grief. Introspective …

Black women in one US City have more than a 2-fold likelihood of experiencing a death in the womb or an infant death within the first year of life when compared to Whites. The purpose of this retrospective population based cohort study was to examine the unexplained high rates of Black fetal and infant (feto-infant) mortality in this city. The study was built on the perinatal periods of risk (PPOR) model. The PPOR model maps each death in a geographic region into four distinct periods of risk based on birth weight and age at death. The study relied upon 51,303 …

Excavations yielded a small assemblage of chipped stone artifacts (tools, cores, and unmodified debitage), two features, and other cultural materials that appear to be associated with occupations ranging from the Late Archaic …

Early To Mid-19th Century Occupation At The Dead Cow Site (41sm324), Smith County, Texas, Timothy K. Perttula

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Dead Cow site is an early to mid-19th century archaeological site located within the northern part (Sabine River basin) of the proposed Republic of Texas 1836 Cherokee Indians land grant in East Texas, generally east of the downtown area of the modem city of Tyler. Cherokee Indians had moved into East Texas by the early 1820s, and "most of the Cherokees cleared land and carved out farms in the uninhabited region directly north of Nacogdoches, on the upper branches of the Neches, Angelina, and Sabine rivers. By 1822 their population had grown to nearly three hundred."

To date, historic …
