John Hughes May Be Onto Something: Anti-Authoritarianism In Education, Film And Policy, James M. Iddins Jan 2011

John Hughes May Be Onto Something: Anti-Authoritarianism In Education, Film And Policy, James M. Iddins

Graduate Student Publications

In this article, I use two popular anti-authoritarian films to explore often-overlooked options for the education reform debate and general issues related to educational public policy. Bringing in sources from many disciplines, including anthropology, sociology, and economics, I argue for a second look at the issues revealed in the films and action on our part toward creating a more sustainable educational and economic reality. I contend that if we take into account our historical context, we come to a much different conclusion regarding these issues than we might have otherwise.

Wellness, Health, And Salvation : About The Religious Dimension Of Contemporary Body-Mindedness, Christoffer H. Grundmann Jan 2011

Wellness, Health, And Salvation : About The Religious Dimension Of Contemporary Body-Mindedness, Christoffer H. Grundmann

Theology Faculty Publications

Alluding to the enormous investments in wellness, health, and anti-aging by affluent US society today the article focuses on the anthropological and religious implications of this phenomenon by stating that the pursuit of such caring for the body has superseded the quest for salvation. The first section provides a historical background analysis of how the contemporary semi-religious bodymindedness came about, while the second part analyses wellness, health, and salvation from a phenomenological point of view. It shows that any body image which does not address human frailty turns into something utterly inhumane while a religiously informed anthropology, in contrast, not …

M.O.M. Vs. Millionaires: The Fight For Equal Opportunities, Imani Edwards Jan 2011

M.O.M. Vs. Millionaires: The Fight For Equal Opportunities, Imani Edwards

African & African American Studies Senior Theses

Racial and social inequality is major influences on areas like the South Bronx that lack resources. It is especially important to know how race plays a role in the poor housing, employment, environmental, and public school conditions in the South Bronx and to what extent it does. Using Wilson's race-complex books, I will explain how over the years, direct racial inequality has been translated into social class inequality.

The Implications Of Unbelief: Tracing The Emergence Of Distinctively ShiʿI Notions Regarding The Food And Impurity Of Non-Muslims, David M. Freidenreich Jan 2011

The Implications Of Unbelief: Tracing The Emergence Of Distinctively ShiʿI Notions Regarding The Food And Impurity Of Non-Muslims, David M. Freidenreich

Faculty Scholarship

The distinctively Shiʿi conception of non-Muslims as bearers of a contagious form of impurity emerges gradually, reaching its classical form only in the 5th/11th century. Contrary to common scholarly presumptions, Q. 9.28 does not constitute the point of origin for this conception but rather serves as retroactive justification for its validity. This essay utilizes ḥadīth collections and works of law from the 2nd/8th through 5th/11th centuries to trace the emergence of Shiʿi notions regarding the impurity of non-Muslims and the parallel emergence of distinctively Shiʿi norms regarding the meat of animals slaughtered by non-Muslims. It concludes by suggesting that the …

New Perspective: Rereading Seymour Joseph Guy's "Making A Train", Lauren K. Lessing Jan 2011

New Perspective: Rereading Seymour Joseph Guy's "Making A Train", Lauren K. Lessing

Faculty Scholarship

In March 1868 a reviewer for the Commercial Advertiser described a small painting on view in Seymour Joseph Guy’s Tenth Street studio in Manhattan. It depicted a young girl preparing for bed and holding around her waist “a gaudy skirt of a dress, its folds, draped behind her, forming a train. From her shoulders a single garment hangs loosely, disclosing her neck and finely rounded shoulders.” The painting, originally titled The Votary (or Votaress) of Fashion, is now known as Making a Train. Visually complex, beautifully painted, and disturbing in its sensual presentation of a prepubescent female body, Making a …

Mirroring The Madness: Caribbean Female Development In The Works Of Elizabeth Nunez, Lauren Delli Santi Jan 2011

Mirroring The Madness: Caribbean Female Development In The Works Of Elizabeth Nunez, Lauren Delli Santi

MA in English Theses

Elizabeth Nunez is a Trinidadian author, critic, and professor who explores the development of female identity within Trinidadian society through her fictional and critical writings. Nunez's article, "The Paradoxes of Belonging," questions the identity of the white creole woman in the Caribbean as she lives in exile due to rejection from her European heritage as well as Afro-Caribbean society. Nunez questions this shaping and questioning of identity through her own fictional works with the formation of her female characters. She uses her native country of Trinidad as the main setting to develop black and biracial female characters and utilizes the …
