Think Independently: How To Think In This World But Not Think With It, James T. Summerhays, Chauncey C. Riddle

BYU Studies

Chauncey C. Riddle, emeritus professor of philosophy at Brigham Young University, has placed an attractive capstone on his professional life with a slim and readable volume that will be of great interest to any Latter-day Saint with a strong philosophical bent. Even those without such a bent will find the book understandable and thought-provoking.

Riddle received his MA and PhD from Columbia University, and adds to his education four decades of experience as a philosophy professor. Each thought in Think Independently is carefully crafted; readers will likely have the sense that behind every sentence is a lifetime of examining, weighing, …

North American Wildland Plants contains descriptions of the salient characteristics of the most important wildland plants of North America. Each illustration has been enhanced to maximize use of the book as a field guide. Each plant description includes identifying characteristics, an illustration of the plant with enlarged parts, and a general distribution map for North America. Each species description includes nomenclature; …

Virginia City, Ronald M. James

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Spent cartridges. The pieces of an original Tabasco Pepper Sauce bottle. Shards of a ceramic pot, stained red. For archaeologists each of the thousands of artifacts uncovered at a site tells a story. For noted Comstock authority Ronald M. James, it is a story resulting from decades of research and excavation at one of the largest National Historic Landmarks in America, the Nevada town that, with the discovery of the Comstock Lode, became a boomtown microcosm of the American West. Drawing on the work of hundreds of volunteers, students, and professional archaeologists, Virginia City: Secrets of a Western Past shows …

Game Faces, Thomas H. Pauly Apr 2011

Game Faces, Thomas H. Pauly

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

This compelling blend of biography and cultural history depicts five important yet nearly forgotten athletes from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries who had a transformative effect on their sports and on the evolution of sports in general. Tom Stevens was the first man to ride a bicycle, “a high wheeler,” around the world (1884-87). Fanny Bullock Workman completed seven expeditions into the Himalayas between 1898 and 1912. Bill Reid, a Harvard football coach and one of the game’s first professionals, played a key role in saving the sport from a national movement to abolish it in 1905. May …

Homelessness And The Mobile Shelter System: Public Transportation As Shelter, Laura Nichols, Fernando Cázares Apr 2011

Homelessness And The Mobile Shelter System: Public Transportation As Shelter, Laura Nichols, Fernando Cázares

Sociology

Those without housing often use public space differently than those who are housed. This can cause dilemmas for and conflicts among public officials as guardians of public space and goods. In this paper, we look at one such utilisation of space from the perspective of those who board 24-hour public transportation routes and ride the bus all night for shelter. We describe the results of a preliminary survey, observations and informal conversations with unhoused riders on the bus over three nights in one county in the United States. We found that a substantial number of the unhoused riders we surveyed …

Mercy, Justice, And Politics: John Paul Ii On Capital Punishment, Kevin E. Miller Apr 2011

Mercy, Justice, And Politics: John Paul Ii On Capital Punishment, Kevin E. Miller

Dissertations (1934 -)

Pope John Paul II's 1995 Evangelium Vitae teaches that capital punishment ought not be used "except ... when it would not be possible otherwise to defend society." Several interpretations of this teaching have been proposed. Through a close reading of the encyclical in itself, in light of John Paul's other writings on the human person and morality, especially the 1980 Dives in Misericordia, and also in the context of such important influences upon him as Thomas Aquinas and Henri de Lubac, I dispute, on the one hand, the interpretation according to which John Paul is pointing toward possible acceptance of …

The Archduke Carl And The Realities Of Habsburg Warfare From 1793-1814: Less Change Then You Thought, Lee W. Eysturlid Apr 2011

The Archduke Carl And The Realities Of Habsburg Warfare From 1793-1814: Less Change Then You Thought, Lee W. Eysturlid

Faculty Publications & Research

The Archduke Carl of Teschen, victor of Stockach and Aspern, and the Habsburg Monarchy’s most famous commander of the age, was an unrepentant opponent of unlimited war; the type of war which he believed had been released by the forces of the French Revolution. To counter these new so-called realities, he looked to “limit” the impact of war through a combination of the Early Modern re-invention of Roman military principles, appeals to service, and the tenets of Theresian Catholicism. In the end, Carl responded to the “emotional,” read nationalistic, forces of the French with Habsburg revanche. This paper will …

Miss Emily Grierson: A Thorn In Jefferson’S Bed, Emily Camras Apr 2011

Miss Emily Grierson: A Thorn In Jefferson’S Bed, Emily Camras

2011 Spring Semester

Judgment, pressure, or failure to live up to a name - although expectations may be inevitable, they often have tragic consequences. In William Faulkner’s short story “A Rose for Emily,” a Southern antebellum town holds many expectations for its Grierson family. The narrator relates Jefferson’s changing regard for Miss Emily between her father’s death, lover’s disappearance, and final seclusion, and also assesses whether she behaves how a legendary Grierson “should”. The town’s judgmental, unrealistic expectations cause Miss Emily’s social exclusion and her descent into a solitary, crazed condition.

The Realization Of The Romantic In "Adonais", Grace Cao Apr 2011

The Realization Of The Romantic In "Adonais", Grace Cao

2011 Spring Semester

In every life, there comes a moment when one wonders if a greater meaning exists beyond this mundane, often sordid world. Is man merely the sum of countless inane struggles, or is there a loftier purpose towards which he can strive? Romanticism is an attempt to answer this question, and is shaped by the belief that there is indeed a more perfect plane which humans yearn to reach. Few works embody the spirit of this movement as well as Percy Bysshe Shelley’s 1821 elegy for John Keats, “Adonais.” By alluding to a Platonic world, idealizing nature, and expressing an attraction …

Escaping To The Sickbed: Illness In Frankenstein, Eleanor Cory '12 Apr 2011

Escaping To The Sickbed: Illness In Frankenstein, Eleanor Cory '12

2011 Spring Semester

Illness tends to lead to separation from society. Becoming sick has always been a reason for someone to stay home to avoid spreading the disease to other people, and because continuing to work rather than resting may cause the one’s condition to get worse or, at the very least, take more time to improve. Throughout Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, the main character falls sick very often, regularly separating himself from society. His deteriorating physical state appears to be linked to the monster he creates, as he usually succumbs to illness immediately after a traumatizing confrontation with it. The character of …

Postmodernism Meets The Mopey Prince: Comparing The Ideologies Of Hamlet And Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, Sarah Weitekamp Apr 2011

Postmodernism Meets The Mopey Prince: Comparing The Ideologies Of Hamlet And Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, Sarah Weitekamp

2011 Spring Semester

It is often said that Hamlet’s tragic flaw was indecisiveness. Centuries of scholars and high school students have imperiously pointed at Hamlet, prescribing an oh-so-obvious solution to our dithering hero’s problems: just do something! Yet in his play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, Tom Stoppard takes the opposite tack, introducing us to characters who are even more actionless and aimless than our troubled Danish prince. Stoppard’s main characters are an obvious homage to Vladimir and Estragon in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot: purely Postmodern men—clueless, directionless, and passionless. By juxtaposing Beckett-like uncertainty with the Bard’s iconic characters and setting, …

Told, Retold, And Repo'd, Jason Tanner Young Apr 2011

Told, Retold, And Repo'd, Jason Tanner Young

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

With a voice comes a story. Stories morph with each retelling. This relates to sculpture; these objects operate as markers. They tell a loose story, but function more as a description of an environment, an attitude or perception. They mark a certain place in time, a feeling. Objects hold a presence. A reminder of when and where, how and how much, and why is that there?

Because Ty left it there, now help me move it.

The work presented is composed of raw beliefs and curious fixations. These truths open memories and start a stumbling internal dialogue. Stories and lived …

Culinary Voices: Perspectives From Dublin Restaurants, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire Apr 2011

Culinary Voices: Perspectives From Dublin Restaurants, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire

Articles

Despite growing interest in culinary history and gastronomy in the last three decades, the use of oral history within the culinary field remains in an embryonic stage. By discussing the strength of oral history, particularly when triangulated with other sources, and surveying some food related projects, the article focuses on the power of oral history to capture the life experiences of chefs, waiters, restaurateurs and diners. The article calls on curators of culinary libraries to build oral history archives which can be accessed electronically.

Solitude And Journey: Two Central Themes In The Spirituality Of John Henry Newman, Ono Ekeh Apr 2011

Solitude And Journey: Two Central Themes In The Spirituality Of John Henry Newman, Ono Ekeh

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

John Henry Newman is widely known for his ideas on doctrinal development, education, conscience, and his reflections on faith and reason. However, it is important to remember that, among the many hats Newman wore, he was mostly a preacher and spiritual director. So in his role as a preacher, pastor, and spiritual leader, did he have a distinct spirituality? If so, what features or ideas would define Newman's spirituality? This paper will explore two prominent and pervasive themes in his spirituality looking primarily at his Parochial and Plain Sermons from his Anglican period and also at some of his Catholic …
