Robot Ethics: Mapping The Issues For A Mechanized World, Patrick Lin, Keith Abney, George Bekey Apr 2011

Robot Ethics: Mapping The Issues For A Mechanized World, Patrick Lin, Keith Abney, George Bekey

Philosophy

As with other emerging technologies, advanced robotics brings with it new ethical and policy challenges. This paper will describe the flourishing role of robots in society—from security to sex—and survey the numerous ethical and social issues, which we locate in three broad categories: safety & errors, law & ethics, and social impact. We discuss many of these issues in greater detail in our forthcoming edited volume on robot ethics from MIT Press.

Autonomy Or Multi-Site? A Policy Capturing Study Of Two Models Of Church Planting For The Guidance Of Future Site Planting At Ascension Lutheran Church, Wichita, Kansas, Michael Bingenheimer Apr 2011

Autonomy Or Multi-Site? A Policy Capturing Study Of Two Models Of Church Planting For The Guidance Of Future Site Planting At Ascension Lutheran Church, Wichita, Kansas, Michael Bingenheimer

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The purpose of this study was to produce a set of reasoned recommendations for future site planting for Ascension Lutheran Church, Wichita, KS. Ascension unintentionally became a multi-site congregation in 2002. This study looks at thirteen Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod congregations. Six congregations planted independent congregations (daughter sites). Six congregations planted multi-site venues (sister sites). One congregation has used both models of church planting. The primary component for information gathering was a survey seeking information from each of these churches on how they decided which model to follow. Understanding the reasoning and assumptions made by these churches, I developed …

Improving Business Performance Through Effectively Managing Employees, Ross E.L. Poquette

Academic Symposium of Undergraduate Scholarship

Businesses in today’s highly competitive environment need to be aware of the best methods for motivating, training, developing, and promoting a diverse environment in an organization. These methods will be examined in order to gain an understanding of what works well and how the ideal organization implements the methods.

The more motivated an employee is, the better he or she will perform. Therefore, it is essential for management to continuously motivate its workforce. Training and development also play an important role in overall performance. The more an employee is trained, the better he or she can complete tasks. Development decreases …

Episcopal Applicants To Ordained Ministry: Are They Psychological Healthy?, Thomas G. Plante, Christopher Apodaca Apr 2011

Episcopal Applicants To Ordained Ministry: Are They Psychological Healthy?, Thomas G. Plante, Christopher Apodaca

Psychology

The current investigation evaluated psychological and personality profiles of applicants to the diaconate and priesthood for several Episcopal dioceses. Applicants included both genders and their ages ranged from 29 to 67 years. A psychological testing battery including the MMPI-2, 16PF, and MCMI-III was administered to 42 applicants between 2008 and 2009 who subsequently entered the diaconate or priestly formation program in the Episcopal Church. Results indicate that these applicants were generally well-adjusted. Findings also suggest some tendency for defensiveness, repression, naïveté, and a strong need for affection, as well as for being emotionally stable, intelligent, trusting, and open to change. …

The Hands Behind The Handicraft: How “Fair” Is Fair Trade?, Carly Hubbard Apr 2011

The Hands Behind The Handicraft: How “Fair” Is Fair Trade?, Carly Hubbard

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Nepal’s male-dominated society, tradition, and culture have left its female population to experience an undermining of their gender socially, politically, and economically. There are fewer opportunities for women in education and in the labor market. In an effort to encourage equality and decrease levels of the widespread poverty existing among Nepal’s female population, thousands of Fair Trade skills training programs have been established. By teaching simple tasks like weaving, sewing, and dyeing, such programs strive to teach those who would otherwise struggle to sustain themselves to perform tasks that will allow them to earn a living. Research and observation of …

Experiencing Samoa Through Stories: Myths And Legends Of A People And Place, Samantha Lichtenberg Apr 2011

Experiencing Samoa Through Stories: Myths And Legends Of A People And Place, Samantha Lichtenberg

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research will explore oral tradition, indigenous beliefs prior to Christianity, and the significance of place through the study of Samoan myths and legends. The researcher will investigate the tradition of storytelling by hearing the stories from Samoan elders themselves. These stories will be supplemented with details from secondary written resources in order to compile comprehensive versions of the myths and legends. The research will consider the affect that Christianity has on the meaning of the stories and examine whether traces of indigenous belief/religion are preserved today through storytelling and the remembrance of myths. The researcher will spend a significant …

Conciencia Social En Granada: Los Éxitos Y Las Dificultades - Raising Social Consciousness In Granada: Successes And Difficulties, Heidi Hong

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Through my community service project at Granada Insider, an English language tourist magazine, I was encouraged to research upcoming events that may give tourists a different perspective of Granada. As I compiled lists of activities in Granada, I was struck by the quantity of events that promoted consciousness about critical themes concerning gender, immigration, and social justice. At my home institution, I had been involved in various campus organizations that are concerned with social issues. My personal interest led me to investigate the role of the provincial government in raising consciousness in public locations. In my project, I establish …

La Concencia Mestiza Materialized: A Study Of Judith Ortiz Cofer’S Silent Dancing, Megan Frutiger Apr 2011

La Concencia Mestiza Materialized: A Study Of Judith Ortiz Cofer’S Silent Dancing, Megan Frutiger

Honors Student Works

In her creative nonfiction memoir Silent Dancing: A Partial Remembrance of a Puerto Rican Childhood, Judith Ortiz Cofer demonstrates one way of dealing with questions of bicultural identity. This creative work, Ortiz Cofer says, arose out of necessity, out of “a need to study [herself] and [her] life in retrospect; to understand what people and events formed [her]” (Cofer 11). Ortiz Cofer felt that she needed to revisit the stories of her childhood and remember the people who told them. It was listening to the stories her grandmother told “under the mango tree that [she] first began to feel the …

The Un-Human Femme Bisclavret: Monstrous Misuses Of The Disunion Between Secular And Religious Culture In Marie De France’S 'Bisclavret', Santidad Bennett Apr 2011

The Un-Human Femme Bisclavret: Monstrous Misuses Of The Disunion Between Secular And Religious Culture In Marie De France’S 'Bisclavret', Santidad Bennett

Honors Student Works

While much of the recent scholarship on Bisclavret has focused on its unusual treatment of the werewolf motif, the more telling character of the story is actually the wife whose abuse of language subverts the major cultural constructs of which she is a part and recasts her as the true monster of the story. Freeman notices the significance of the wife but focuses primarily on the subversion of secular courtly culture. Meanwhile, Stypczynksi and Bruckner are more interested in the religious atmosphere and tone of the short lai. While each approach is useful in its own right, this paper puts …

Innovation And Harmonization In Raphael's Stanza Della Segnatura, Nathan Cornelius Apr 2011

Innovation And Harmonization In Raphael's Stanza Della Segnatura, Nathan Cornelius

Library Research Prize Student Works

Raphael's paintings for the Stanza della Segnatura, Pope Julius II's personal library in the Vatican, are one of the great masterpieces of Renaissance art. My research project explored the rich meaning behind this innovative series of images, which project an expansive and holistic view of truth. I discovered that Raphael's message is relevant for Christians today who are trying to preserve a coherent view of truth in a complex, pluralistic culture.

From Famine To Feast: The Give And Take Of Food In A Global Subsistence Environment, Laurence M. Carucci Apr 2011

From Famine To Feast: The Give And Take Of Food In A Global Subsistence Environment, Laurence M. Carucci

Pacific Studies

Food is the primary transactional substance for Enewetak/Ujelang people [Republic of the Marshall Islands] and its production, preparation, consumption and exchange are central to how local people fashion and maintain social relationships and how they construct identities. At the same time, while the constitutive properties of food have remained culturally vigorous, the foods themselves have changed radically under colonialism. In particular, rehabilitation attempts in the post-nuclear testing era on Enewetak introduced extraordinary rapid dietary changes in the community and resulted in the onset of an epidemic of sedentary illnesses. The social practices that relate to food production and consumption are …

In today's world of music, everything is constantly changing alongside the progression of technology. With these developments, new musical genres have emerged and many people are still unaware of them. If you listen, you can hear these styles and genres being used in popular music.

For the past several months I have jumped headfirst into the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) and rave scene. I have been documenting, observing, and researching all that it has to offer. I have been networking with people involved, be they DJs, Go-Go Dancers, Participants, Promoters, or Photographers. It has been a truly rewarding experience.

Every Tribe And Tongue: A Biblical Vision For Language In Society, Michael Pasquale, Nathan Bierma Apr 2011

Every Tribe And Tongue: A Biblical Vision For Language In Society, Michael Pasquale, Nathan Bierma

Alumni Book Gallery

Every Tribe and Tongue offers a way, first, to rediscover biblical stories and principles that relate to questions about immigration and societal multilingualism, and, second, to outline possible ways to guide thoughtful engagement in the discourse of the "public square" based on the biblical witness. We will try to show that, far from being an afterthought in the Bible, the call to love our neighbors and to gather people of every nation together in the worship of God is at the very core of the gospel message.

Two powerful passions animate this book from beginning to end. First, this work …

The Oval, 2011

The Oval

We all come from different places, be they physical, mental, or emotional. College is, for many, the place where all these different viewpoints connect. While some have criscrossed the country, trying to settle down, others have stayed close to home, hunting on the Missouri Breaks or getting to know the locals. The 2011 issue of the Oval contains stories, poems, and art expressing this variety of places.

Putting John On Trial: Teaching Christology By Using The Classroom As A Courtroom, George Faithful Apr 2011

Putting John On Trial: Teaching Christology By Using The Classroom As A Courtroom, George Faithful

Collected Faculty Scholarship

My purpose today is to share the results of an experiment I conducted and to suggest ways it could be improved and reproduced. In a 200-level course called “Christian Beliefs” at a Saint Louis University, a Catholic institution, I staged a mock trial. All students in the class were assigned to read the Gospel of John with an eye for how its author portrayed Christ’s nature. From among the thirty students, I asked for four volunteers, two each for two competing teams, the defense and prosecution. The defense was charged with summarizing John’s Christology and with making the case that …
