Tango From A Historical And Social Perspective: A Performer’S Supplement To The Tango Fake Book By Mark Wyman, Sarah L. Cosano Apr 2011

Tango From A Historical And Social Perspective: A Performer’S Supplement To The Tango Fake Book By Mark Wyman, Sarah L. Cosano

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Argentine tango, which originated around 1890, has spanned just over a century in its development and evolution. During this time, tango music has been integrated into many genres. Despite this popularity, there is only a small body of research that discusses performance technique, history, and musical lineage. This thesis is a supplement to The Tango Fake Book, a book of lead sheets published by Mark Wyman in 2006. Five tango works from the text were chosen, each representing a different period of tango history. These works are: “El Choclo” (“The Ear of Corn”), “La Cumparsita” (“The Little Parade”), “Por una …

Re-Translating Haruki Murakami's "The Second Bakery Attack", James Preimesberger , '11

Alice L. Crossley Prize

"The Second Bakery Attack" is a short story written by Haruki Murakami, published in 1989 as the first story in a collection ofthe same name. It is the story of a man (known only by the pronoun "Boku," or "I") and wife who, after waking up in the middle of the night to find themselves hungrier than they have ever been, commit a minor crime with the hopes of satisfying their stomachs. "The Second Bakery Attack" explores interpersonal relationships as well as the relationship one has with one's own body. This translation seeks to emphasize this aspect of the story, …

Reasonable Conversions: Susanna Rowan's Mentoria And Conversion Narratives For Young Readers, Karen Roggenkamp Apr 2011

Reasonable Conversions: Susanna Rowan's Mentoria And Conversion Narratives For Young Readers, Karen Roggenkamp

Faculty Publications

Though not well known, Rowson's Mentoria-a curious conglomeration of thematically-related pieces from multiple genres, including the essay, epistolary novel, conduct book, and fairy tale-offers particularly fertile ground for thinking about the nexus between eighteenth-century didactic books and earlier works for young readers.2 At the heart of Mentoria is a series of letters describing girls who yield, with dire and frequently deadly consequences, to the passionate pleas of male suitors.3 Fallen women populate Rowson's world, and scholars have traditionally read Mentoria within the familiar bounds of the eighteenth-century seduction novel.4 However, Rowson's creation transforms the older tradition of didactic, child-centered conversion …

Performing The Audience: Constructing Playgoing In Early Modern Drama, Eric Dunnum Apr 2011

Performing The Audience: Constructing Playgoing In Early Modern Drama, Eric Dunnum

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation argues that early modern playwrights used metadrama to construct the experience and concept of playgoing for their audiences. By staging playgoing in front of playgoers, playwrights sought to teach their audiences how to attend a play and how to react to a performance. This type of instruction was possible, and perhaps necessary, because in early modern London attending a professionally produced play with thousands of other playgoers was a genuinely new cultural activity, so no established tradition of playgoing existed. Thus, playwrights throughout the era from John Lyly to Richard Brome attempted to invent playgoing through their performances. …

Lex Orandi, Lex Legendi: A Correlation Of The Roman Canon And The Fourfold Sense Of Scripture, Matthew Thomas Gerlach Apr 2011

Lex Orandi, Lex Legendi: A Correlation Of The Roman Canon And The Fourfold Sense Of Scripture, Matthew Thomas Gerlach

Dissertations (1934 -)

While the correlation between the liturgy and the Bible was vital in the patristic-medieval period, a dichotomy grew up between them in modern times. Starting with the assumption that a fuller retrieval of the correlation today requires forms of engaging texts which are not exclusively linear or historico-critical, the dissertation argues that the dichotomy between liturgy and Bible is overcome within a correlation of the Eucharist and spiritual exegesis that retrieves a typological reading of Scripture and that attends to the liturgical relationships memorial, presence, and anticipation. The structure of reading the Bible parallels the structure of praying within the …

Revisiting The Zahavi–Brough/Sokolowski Debate, Neal Deroo Apr 2011

Revisiting The Zahavi–Brough/Sokolowski Debate, Neal Deroo

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

In 1999, Dan Zahavi’s Self Awareness and Alterity: A Phenomenological Investigation initiated a critique of the standard interpretation of the distinction between the second and third levels of Husserl’s analysis of time-constituting consciousness. At stake was the possibility of a coherent account of self-awareness (Zahavi’s concern), but also the possibility of prereflectively distinguishing the acts of consciousness (Brough and Sokolowski’s rebuttal of Zahavi’s critique). Using insights gained from Husserl’s Analyses Concerning Passive Synthesis rather than the work on time-consciousness, this paper provides a new, more precise vocabulary in which to carry on the debate, in the hopes of bringing it …

Language And Identity In Postcolonial African Literature: A Case Study Of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, Abigail Guthrie Apr 2011

Language And Identity In Postcolonial African Literature: A Case Study Of Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, Abigail Guthrie

Masters Theses

Sociolinguists often research the development of language attitudes and the state of language within speech communities. Individual speakers reflect the status of their L1 language in both speaking and writing (Wa Thiong'o 1986, Showalter 2001), and the idea that writing can be used as a set of data that reflects an author's language attitude is the motivation for this research. Salikoko Mufwene (2001), one of the leading experts on creolization and the ecology of language, has argued that individual speakers of a language make daily choices that affect the future of their native tongue. Using the novel Things Fall Apart …

Incomplete (Six), Joshua Burel Apr 2011

Incomplete (Six), Joshua Burel

Masters Theses

Incomplete (six) is comprised of six short movements written for full orchestra. Each movement depicts a different idea as it relates to the number six. In biblical numerology the number six represents incompletion and shortcoming while seven signifies completeness and fulfillment. Six therefore cannot be complete without the addition of one to make seven. The number six is commonly used to represent man since he was created on the sixth day of creation while the number one represents God as the one true God. The numbers six and one work together to identify the reality that man is only made …

Resistance Meets Spirituality In Academia: "I Prayed On It!", Vonzell Agosto, Zorka Karanxha

Educational Leadership and Policy Studies Faculty Publications

We describe the lived experiences of a Black Woman educational leader who has studied and worked in the academy and in the field of K-12 education. This partial life history, excavated through the tenets of Critical Race Theory (CRT), illuminates the social construction of race and the pervasiveness and permanence of racism. We determined through a series of interviews that the participant's resilient resistance is guided by critical spirituality so that circumstances and people who challenge her also confront this source of power. Her lived experience, from student to faculty member, conveys the challenges and opportunities she faces and adds …

The Beauty Of The Ethical: An Everyday Ethics That Brings Grace To Life, Ross W. Mccullough Apr 2011

The Beauty Of The Ethical: An Everyday Ethics That Brings Grace To Life, Ross W. Mccullough

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Excerpt: "Malcolm Muggeridge entitled his reflection on Mother Teresa Something Beautiful for God. Perhaps the force of that expression does not immediately strike us, but consider how curious a statement it is: that here was something—an act, a project, a life—beautiful for God. By far the most curious aspect, and the hardest to see afresh and not as mere formula, is that it was for God; but I leave that to a subsequent essay, with only the saints, here Teresa and Irenaeus, to point toward my sequel. For now note instead that it was something beautiful."

The Machinery Of Design: Playing With Brecht, The Surrealists, And Provocative Images, Lynn Koller Apr 2011

The Machinery Of Design: Playing With Brecht, The Surrealists, And Provocative Images, Lynn Koller

Humanities & Communication - Daytona Beach

This paper proposes that print ad designers have usurped Brecht's style of epic theater and the Surrealists’ affection for paradox and irrationality and offers an analysis of three contemporary ads. Brecht used techniques to remind theater audiences that they were watching a play rather than observing a representation of reality. He found that the machinery of theater, opera, and the press is no longer “a means of furthering output but has become an obstacle to output, and specifically to [intellectuals’] own output as soon as it follows a new and original course which the apparatus finds awkward or opposed to …
