Mapping England's Trade Through Depictions In English Emblems., Valerie J. Erickson May 2011

Mapping England's Trade Through Depictions In English Emblems., Valerie J. Erickson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the growing interaction between England and foreign countries comparing their trade with contemporary later sixteenth century and seventeenth century English emblems. The emblems used are those available over the internet from several different library and university sources. As England expanded its trade throughout the world, English emblems began to show the exchange occurring between England and its various trading partners. Historians have largely overlooked this valuable source of information. By studying emblems historians gain invaluable insight into the economy, society, politics, religion, and other matters with which England was concerned.

Healthy Performance Practice For Male Barbershop Singers, Jacob K. Bartlett May 2011

Healthy Performance Practice For Male Barbershop Singers, Jacob K. Bartlett

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Barbershop singing is a hobby enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of men and women across the world. We attend conventions, shows, competitions, and educational outreach programs each year at our own expense to preserve a style we truly love.

Most singers of the style are amateur musicians. This constitutes somewhat of a challenge when we consider the need for healthy singing in light of certain assumptions about the vocal technique required of the barbershop style. Most do their best to make a healthy sound but end up doing more harm than good to their own voices after a lengthy rehearsal. …

The Ideology Of Equality: James Murray Mason And Antebellum Politics, Adam Zucconi May 2011

The Ideology Of Equality: James Murray Mason And Antebellum Politics, Adam Zucconi

All Theses

Most studies of antebellum Virginia politician James Murray Mason examine his post-Senate career as Confederate ambassador to England. Those that do explore his tenure as a senator and, earlier, state politician, misinterpret his ideology and portray him as a proslavery demagogue. Perhaps most troubling, few delve into the political context of Virginia, and the forces and tensions present in the Commonwealth during this period. This study seeks to question this historiographical trend by asking a question basic to any understanding of Mason's career: What was the foundation of James M. Mason's political ideology, and how did he balance it as …

Potential Conflict: The Confluence Of Race And Economics During The Administration Of Ernest 'Fritz' Hollings, 1959-1963, Phillip Mullinnix

All Theses

This work is about the administration of South Carolina Governor Ernest 'Fritz' Hollings, who served as the state's chief executive from 1959-1963. It specifically deals with his plans for industrial and economic development and how the civil rights movement and integration impacted those plans. The thesis of this work is that the Hollings administration devised a peaceful solution to racial integration that left the state's industrial and economic development pursuits unharmed and untarnished. This work deals with the persistence of poverty and lack of development that plagued the state following the Civil War and the importance and need for development …

The Excursion: A Screenplay Adaptation Of Francis Brooke’S The Excursion., Jennifer Sim Daniel May 2011

The Excursion: A Screenplay Adaptation Of Francis Brooke’S The Excursion., Jennifer Sim Daniel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My master’s thesis consists of a screenplay adaptation of the Eighteenth Century novel The Excursion by Francis Brooke, as well as an Introduction that details the writing process of the main text. In order to prepare this manuscript, I began with a study of both Francis Brooke and her novel as part of Dr. Judith Slagle’s Eighteenth Century British Novel course and developed my work to completion through independent research on and application of my findings on the screenwriting genre. The concluding product is a three-act screenplay which maintains the original period setting, speech, and costuming while adding such contemporary …

Buddhist Contributions To The Question Of (Un)Mediated Mystical Experience, Yaroslav Komarovski May 2011

Buddhist Contributions To The Question Of (Un)Mediated Mystical Experience, Yaroslav Komarovski

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

In this article, I address divergent Buddhist positions on conceptual and non-conceptual understanding of reality and the process of transition from the former to the latter. My discussion is anchored in the context of a well-known problematic issue in the field of religious studies, namely, the question of (un)mediated mystical experience. Connecting uniquely Buddhist philosophical and contemplative perspectives with the questions debated in contemporary studies of mysticism, I argue that Buddhism can make significant contributions to that field. Not only does it provide refined models of mind, contemplative processes, and other elements that help us understand certain mystical experiences, but …

Divide, Mandy C. Stigant May 2011

Divide, Mandy C. Stigant

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

As human beings we have an innate hunger for meaning and, not coincidentally, an interesting ability to assimilate patterns, to recognize working systems. For all our ability to reason and assimilate, however, concrete answers to our questions of meaning and our hunger for understanding are elusive, vague and often lacking. In my work I pursue a two-fold exploration. On the one hand I want to express my fascination with that riddle of the human condition, of our need for meaning and our parallel inability to pinpoint it concretely. On the other hand I am fascinated with the fact that our …

From Form To Form, Pia Bergholtz May 2011

From Form To Form, Pia Bergholtz

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

My MFA thesis project is an exploration of the evolving nature of patterns, and how set shapes and lines can take on new form through position, scale, repetition and color. I have designed four Scandinavian style patterns with imagery and colors drawn from my roots and childhood in Sweden. With the inspiration and direction of a variety of different cultural imagery and form, I then explored how to make new patterns from each of these, ending up with over 100 different patterns and variations from the original four. The exhibit represents the wide range of transformation that can be achieved, …

Metrical Theory And Verdi's Midcentury Operas, William Rothstein May 2011

Metrical Theory And Verdi's Midcentury Operas, William Rothstein

Publications and Research

Both historical and recent theories of meter have tended to assume that meter is a single phenomenon, definable in a single (though perhaps complex) way. Most U.S. theories of meter have been based on a limited repertoire: instrumental music by German composers. Examination of Verdi's mid-century operas, from Macbeth through La traviata (1846–53), suggests that different theoretical approaches may be appropriate for different repertoires. National traditions of composition, depending often on national poetic traditions, may require different ways of hearing and counting, and thus different ways of modeling meter. The metrical theories of Fred Lerdahl and Ray Jackendoff, David Temperley, …

A Tale Of Two Carlos: An Examination Of The Ongoing Battle Between The Marginalized And The Privileged As Exemplified By Carlo Goldoni And Carlo Gozzi During The 18th Century, David Josh Patterson May 2011

A Tale Of Two Carlos: An Examination Of The Ongoing Battle Between The Marginalized And The Privileged As Exemplified By Carlo Goldoni And Carlo Gozzi During The 18th Century, David Josh Patterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis explores the lives and works of Carlo Gozzi and Carlo Goldoni. Specific emphasis is placed on their feud, positions in society, the motivations behind their theatrical styles, and the ways they used theatre to either attempt to maintain the status quo (Gozzi) or strive for social change (Goldoni). Contrary to previous studies, this study suggests that Goldoni tried to influence the world around him, rather than merely reflect it. This study examines the above through the lens of several twentieth century theories including semiotics, structuralism, and the avante-garde. The contents of this work are essential to anyone seeking …

Zababdeh: A Palestinian Water History, Julia S. Templin May 2011

Zababdeh: A Palestinian Water History, Julia S. Templin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study explores the historical evolution of the water situation in Palestine at a local level in the West Bank village of Zababdeh. The thesis examines Palestine's geography and the historical relationship of Zababdeh's people with this environment. A sudden shift in this relationship took place during the second half of the 20th century, particularly after the advent of Israeli occupation. The thesis also addresses the Palestinians' involvement, or lack thereof, in water politics of the West Bank during the 20th century. The pattern of neglect has left Palestinians in a weak position to secure safe and reliable water supplies …

French-Born Settlers In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, 1821-1900 : Immigration, Influence, Integration And Identity, Olivier Schouteden May 2011

French-Born Settlers In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, 1821-1900 : Immigration, Influence, Integration And Identity, Olivier Schouteden

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The thesis analyzes the French-born people who settled in the Lower Rio Grande Valley between 1821 and 1900. It focuses on four key elements which are inter-related: Immigration, influence, integration and identity.

This study answers two complex questions: what was the influence exerted by the French-born settlers on the Lower Rio Grande Valley, and what was the influence of the area on their settlement, integration, and identity? Such an investigation aims to fill the gap in knowledge on the French and European presence in the 19th century Lower Rio Grande society, and to broaden our understanding of the immigration …

Looking For Adam: An Analysis Of The Works Of Marilynne Robinson, Kristina Y. Zavala May 2011

Looking For Adam: An Analysis Of The Works Of Marilynne Robinson, Kristina Y. Zavala

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Many scholars have analyzed the works of Marilynne Robinson, focusing their work on analyzing her novels separately instead of as a whole according to her views of Calvinism and other faith-related themes. This thesis will take apart all of the essays in The Death of Adam, examining each of them for the most important views and opinions expressed by the author. These issues have served to evolve Robinson‘s opinions in such a way that to analyze her novels according to only her religious views would be an injustice. By examining the use of certain aspects of the novel form, this …

The Ripening Of Mangos, Katherine Hoerth May 2011

The Ripening Of Mangos, Katherine Hoerth

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This project is a collection of poems which draw influence from Romantic, confessional, and post-modern poetry movements, and can most accurately be described as Confessionalistic, though they are resistant to categorization. The poems function to dismantle archetypal definitions of feminine identity, and instead aim to depict identity to be fluid and multifaceted.

The Ripening of Mangos is divided into four sections. The first section deconstructs the 'angel' or 'virgin' archetype, while the second deconstructs the 'monster' or 'whore' archetype. Section three includes voices of procreation, and functions to complicate the image of 'the mother.' The last section, Transplanting, shows gendered …

The New Woman Persona In “Dracula” And The “Twilight” Series: An Elliptical Struggle Of Social Order, Silvia E. Herrera May 2011

The New Woman Persona In “Dracula” And The “Twilight” Series: An Elliptical Struggle Of Social Order, Silvia E. Herrera

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis will explore the existence of the New Woman persona found in the Gothic works, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series. By exploring this persona, we can shed light on the internal struggle, comprised of Victorian gender roles and one’s desire to seek greater liberation, which results in the presence of an elliptical struggle that finds itself at a constant state of progression and digression. In order to have a greater understanding of the New Woman persona, we must explore both works’ themes of the uncanny figure, sexuality and female heroism. Through the exploration of these themes, …

Triangular Desire In Sandra Cisneros's “Never Marry A Mexican”, Laura V. Bazaldua May 2011

Triangular Desire In Sandra Cisneros's “Never Marry A Mexican”, Laura V. Bazaldua

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis focuses on desire in Sandra Cisneros’s short story “Never Marry a Mexican” in her collection Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories. Cisneros alters the typical configuration of triangular desire in Western literature by focusing on two females and one male. This thesis analyzes the protagonist’s mimetic desire, applying the Girardian model of triangular desire, for her lover’s wife and how it illustrates her internalized racist views. This analysis examines the correlation between mimetic desire and the protagonist’s, an individual of color, investment in the illusion of whiteness.

Her desire is fundamentally a drive toward Megan, who represents the …

Twelve: Race And Gender Representations In Hidalgo County Petit Jury Selections, 1950–1960, Rene Rios May 2011

Twelve: Race And Gender Representations In Hidalgo County Petit Jury Selections, 1950–1960, Rene Rios

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The purpose of this thesis is to address the composition of Hidalgo County petit (small) juries from 1950-1960 on the basis of race and gender in which I will argue that the racial composition of the County’s petit juries was predominantly Anglo. Following the inclusion of women into juror selection pools after 1954, I assert that Anglo females were selected at higher rates than Mexican American males and females during the same time period which continued the political and civic marginalization of the county’s Mexican American population. This work addresses the social and political environment of Hidalgo County. Along with …

A Theology Of Religious Change, David J. Zehnder May 2011

A Theology Of Religious Change, David J. Zehnder

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Zehnder, David, J. “A Theology of Religious Change.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2011. 218 pp.

This essay sets up a dialogue between the sociology and psychology of religious change (conversion’s human side) and conversion (theologically defined) to prove that empirical research into change experience, ideology as an attracting force to religion, and social networks’ influence on conversion does not threaten theology’s assertions but can help to clarify theology’s tasks in communicating to various audiences. Science helps theology through a correlational model of interaction developed in the study. The correlational method first asks of science: Why do people change religiously? Once …
