The Life And Works Of Edvard Grieg, Leah Kennedy May 2011

The Life And Works Of Edvard Grieg, Leah Kennedy

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Composer Edvard Grieg merged a Classical and Romantic style of music with traditional Norwegian characteristics to create his own unique, complex style that is still widely performed today. His music changed the way we think of Romantic music and foreshadowed 20th century styles that would emerge only a few years later. His compositions vary throughout his life based on other composers’ innovations and his own preferences, but how much did Grieg’s personal life affect his music? And how did his life events shape his emerging style during his career? This information is displayed in a lecture recital format and will …

Legal Positivism: An Analysis, Jonathan Brett Chambers May 2011

Legal Positivism: An Analysis, Jonathan Brett Chambers

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Having taken some constitution and government courses during my undergraduate studies, I was comfortable with my understanding of justice and morality. An independent research seminar into the philosophy of law with Dr. Huenemann changed that. Taking Brian Leiter's book Naluralizing Jurilprudence as our guide, we dived into the vast question of "what is the law?" This seemingly simple question has shaped western society in too many ways to account. for instance, Legal Realists - one group that believes all rights "are the creations of government and the legal rules it lays down,,1 - dramatically changed labor laws in the early …

Crossing Borders: Cultural And Linguistic Passages In The Poetry Of Pat Mora And Gary Soto, Amber Christine Bowden May 2011

Crossing Borders: Cultural And Linguistic Passages In The Poetry Of Pat Mora And Gary Soto, Amber Christine Bowden

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Poets Pat Mora and Gary Soto have long been a presence in anthologies citing their multicultural content, yet their work has not been placed as part of the classroom canon. By leaving their work out of the classroom, we have lost the benefit of their diverse poetry. As the demographics of Utah shift, including works such as Mora and Soto’s becomes more essential for student success. In a close textual analysis of seventeen poems by Mora and Soto we can see that each poet uses a variety of themes to frame their verse. Not only does an overall analysis show …

Wounded Planet, Wounded People: The Possibility Of Ecological Trauma, Lauren Woolbright May 2011

Wounded Planet, Wounded People: The Possibility Of Ecological Trauma, Lauren Woolbright

All Theses

In recognizing that the human relationship to the nonhuman natural world has been characterized primarily by trauma, we might notice that humans abuse landscapes and deplete resources, harming the very ecosystems that support us, moving on when they no longer can or using technology in order to remain. This might be seen as a double trauma in which the human traumatizes ecosystems, which are then traumatic to the human. Our unwillingness as a culture to consider the nonhuman natural world as a valuable subject capable of experiencing trauma prevents us from understanding the repercussions of our actions. Spivak's theory offers …

Bodies Of Flesh, Bodies Of Knowledge: Representations Of Female Genital Cutting And Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery, Maureen Whitcomb May 2011

Bodies Of Flesh, Bodies Of Knowledge: Representations Of Female Genital Cutting And Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery, Maureen Whitcomb

Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

This paper will examine popular feminist and mainstream representations of female genital cutting (FGC) and female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS) and its influence on the creation of effective cross-cultural dialogue and engagement in a deeper understanding of cultural practices. I suggest that these current depictions of FGC and FGCS highlight cultural differences and overlook similarities that exist between the two practices. I further posit that the inability to recognize similarities that exist between FGC and FGCS does not allow for an examination of power structures in regards to who has the power to define these cultural practices as they exist …

Developing Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (Calp) In Diverse Classrooms, Kristen M. Lillywhite May 2011

Developing Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (Calp) In Diverse Classrooms, Kristen M. Lillywhite

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The process of second language acquisition was studied by examining the distinction between basic interpersonal conversation skills (BICS) and cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP). This distinction, originally proposed by linguist Jim Cummins, relates to current trends in the U.S public education system. A review of the literature was conducted and integrated with information obtained by interviewing local language arts teachers. The primary goal of the study was to learn how public school teachers conceptualize second language acquisition and literacy instruction. The thesis also addresses how the BICS/CALP distinction can be applied in real classroom settings. Teachers reported that low student …

Rising Metaphors: Bread And Christianity In Contemporary Short Fiction, Marleah Callie Jacobson May 2011

Rising Metaphors: Bread And Christianity In Contemporary Short Fiction, Marleah Callie Jacobson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Although my thesis centers on the use of bread metaphors to represent Christian themes in fiction, it became important that my thesis explored and examined a variety of food writing. Broadly defined, food writing has existed since the beginnings of literature. Because food encompasses all five senses, writing about food is a rich metaphorical tool. Bread is an excellent example of a prevalent food metaphor that largely involves all five senses. Early examples using this metaphor are found frequently in the Bible. My thesis also examines how this metaphor is present and used in contemporary fiction. Consideration is given to …

Continuity And Development In Roman Catholic Ecclesiology, Susan K. Wood May 2011

Continuity And Development In Roman Catholic Ecclesiology, Susan K. Wood

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

An overview of the conceptualizations of the Catholic Church from the theology of Bellarmine to contemporary understanding of the church as communion shows both continuity and development from one concept to the next rather than an abrupt change to a new model that discards the model preceding it. This essay examines the church as perfect society, church as mystical body, church as sacrament, church as people of God, and church as communion, demonstrating that the various conceptualizations represent development, balance, correction, and a deeper penetration in the understanding and articulation of the prior conceptualizations. The church as body of Christ …
