The Role Of Indulgences In The Building Of New Saint Peter’S Basilica, Ginny Justice May 2011

The Role Of Indulgences In The Building Of New Saint Peter’S Basilica, Ginny Justice

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

New St. Peter’s Basilica is the second largest church in the world and considered by many to be the most beautiful. Built mainly during the sixteenth century, it took over a century to complete, and withstood corruption, wars, the Reformation, the Counter-Reformation, good popes and evil ones, and inched its way toward completion in 1626. The main funding for the early stages of building New St. Peter’s came from the sale of indulgences. Indulgences did more than help pay for the basilica, however. The abusive means of selling indulgences, including lies from priests and the papacy about their efficacy, resulted …

Re-Envisioning The Mexican American Experience In World War Ii: A Local History Of Sacramento & The Mexican American Wwii Generation, Juan Pablo Mercado

Master's Projects

Traditional U.S. historical scholars, as a matter of practice, carelessly push the history of the Mexican American community to the fringes of the collective historical consciousness of this country by selecting the common stories that students of all races learn. This study examines the problem of insufficient and inadequate historical scholarship pertaining to people of Mexican ancestry of the United States. By providing a local history of Mexican Americans in the Sacramento Valley this project provides a challenge to the legacy of historical exclusion by documenting the contributions and experiences of the Mexican American World War II generation and provides …

Innocence Lost: The Tension Of Contrary States In Blake And Milton, Andrew M. Spratt May 2011

Innocence Lost: The Tension Of Contrary States In Blake And Milton, Andrew M. Spratt

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Though writing more than one-hundred years apart, the poetic works of John Milton and William Blake interacted with one another to such an extent that they have become increasingly entwined within the critical imagination of scholars over the past two centuries. Despite the recognition of the influence of Milton upon Blake, and subsequent examinations of Blake’s opinions of Milton as an artist, a thorough examination of Blake’s opinion of Milton as the narrator of Paradise Lost has heretofore remained unattempted. This essay examines Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience as a lens through which to interpret the narrator of …

My Made For Tv Life Or How We Survived My Psycho-Killer Dad, Sarah Beth Mcdonald May 2011

My Made For Tv Life Or How We Survived My Psycho-Killer Dad, Sarah Beth Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The critical afterword discusses my struggles writing a memoir after a lifetime of primarily fictional influences, the ethics of truth and memory, and my attempts to find a style that would do justice to my mother s struggles. The memoir began its life as a portrayal of my mother's story, but in the end was the story of a girl growing up with the knowledge of her father's attempted murder, and the strength of her mother's guidance. My story.

After “Borderlands” The Making Of An Academic Chola: Poems, Veronica Sandoval

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This poetry collection is by a Mexican American spoken word, performance poet, Lady Mariposa, from Sullivan City turned Chican@ feminist after coming to terms with her mestizaje through Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands La Frontera: The New Mestiza. In Lady Mariposa’s journey as an “Academic Chola,” the term “chola” articulates her Chican@ identity and creates a new space in academia by using “chola” as a hybrid of identity and style in the formation of her poetics. Her poetry can also be called pocho, pocha, Tex-Mex and code switches. She is inspired by Chican@ literature and history, lowriders, cholo culture, cholas, jazz, hip …

Tinged, Sarah Sherrill May 2011

Tinged, Sarah Sherrill

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Authors use connotation to create subtext and depth; often, words fail me. Instead, I use color, lines, and texture, and once I’ve labored to bring them into being, I’m surprised by the truths they reveal about my subjects and me. That which I find difficult to articulate, I am able to convey through canvas, wood, metal, any material that speaks to me. Most of my art is a reflection of my internal exploration. In my search to find myself, I reflect on my childhood memories of traveling through Mexico with my family. Tinged is my visual diary; it gave me …

Phosphormorphosis, Elizabeth Fernandez Figueroa May 2011

Phosphormorphosis, Elizabeth Fernandez Figueroa

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The artwork I create facilitates my artistic direction and has developed from childhood memories to current adulthood experiences of viewing how light can change the form of many things including organic forms. My extensive research and technical experimentations with the different color value manipulation of acrylic and oil based paints to accommodate the phosphorescent paint has brought me to create a new technique in painting which I titled “Phosphormorphosis”. Phosphormorphosis is to change the form of a two-dimensional image or three-dimensional surface by manipulating the color value of wet or dry media and adding phosphorescent paint to distort the image …

Disciples Of Vu, Leif Carl Behmer May 2011

Disciples Of Vu, Leif Carl Behmer

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This project is in the design of high-fantasy sword and sorcery, wherein the concepts of mana and magic are employed as expressions of virtue to highlight contemporary issues of cultural identity and belonging. This project is also an experiment to attract a readership of non-traditional fantasy readers into the genre by creating, rather than assuming, a fantastic world context using immersive rhetorical techniques.

This project in of itself is not so much a re-invention of the traditional adventure quest as it is an exploration of its post-Tolkien form (the attraction of mythology and folklore, the narrative use of prophecy), and …

Common Core Thesis And A Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Mysticism In Chinese Buddhist Monks And Nuns, Zhuo Chen May 2011

Common Core Thesis And A Qualitative And Quantitative Analysis Of Mysticism In Chinese Buddhist Monks And Nuns, Zhuo Chen

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study explored the phenomenological structure of mystical experience among 139 Chinese Pure Land and Chan Buddhist monks and nuns. Semi-structured interviews, thematic coding, and statistical analyses identified Hood’s Mysticism Scale as a valid tool for studying mysticism across religions and cultures. Stace’s common facets of mysticism as measured by Hood’s scale successfully described Buddhist experience as modified by Buddhist doctrines. Confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that these facets could be formed into Stace’s three-factor structure. A mystical introvertive unity hypothesized to be separate from an extrovertive unity appeared instead to converge in the Chinese Buddhist context. These results lent strong …

John Wesley‟S Liturgical Revision: A Pattern For Reshaping Worship For Post-Christian America, Lawrence A. Lacher May 2011

John Wesley‟S Liturgical Revision: A Pattern For Reshaping Worship For Post-Christian America, Lawrence A. Lacher

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Lacher, Lawrence A. “John Wesley‟s Liturgical Revision: A Pattern for Reshaping Worship for Post-Christian America.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2011. 316 pp.

This project seeks to find a solution to the current malformation of Christian Worship in the American church through re-examining John Wesley‟s Sunday Service for Methodists in North America (1784) in order to extract the underlying pattern. That pattern is then proposed as a paradigm that allows for the contextualization of worship while retaining its historic shape, function and purpose.

John Wesley‟s liturgical advices are examined for several reasons. Since the writer is interested in helping those who …
