Louisiana's Hope For A Francophone Future: Exploring The Linguistic Phenomena Of Acadiana's French Immersion Schools, Albert Sidney Camp Jan 2010

Louisiana's Hope For A Francophone Future: Exploring The Linguistic Phenomena Of Acadiana's French Immersion Schools, Albert Sidney Camp

LSU Master's Theses

Cajun and Creole French are thought of by scholars and lay-people alike as the two varieties of French spoken in Louisiana. While this may have been true to some extent in the past, the linguistic landscape of Louisiana is constantly evolving. As in other parts of the world, globalization, higher education, and an ever expanding media presence are changing the linguistic reality for Louisiana’s French speaking community. The twentieth century has seen a complete shift in the status of the French language in relation to public schools in Louisiana. In the early twentieth century, many children learned French at home …

Understanding Teen Pregnancy Amongst Latinas: An Investigation Of The Cultural Values And Societal Factors That Contribute To Adolescent Motherhood, Mary Bateman Krom Jan 2010

Understanding Teen Pregnancy Amongst Latinas: An Investigation Of The Cultural Values And Societal Factors That Contribute To Adolescent Motherhood, Mary Bateman Krom

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis presents an investigation into the various cultural and societal factors that contribute to the Latina teen pregnancy rate. According to the PEW Hispanic Center, Latinas account for more instances of adolescent motherhood than any other ethnic or ethnic demographic in the country. Although much research has been done in the area of teen pregnancy, so far little has been completed with the specified focus on the Latina population. This study therefore offers a unique perspective of the phenomenon in its consideration of various literary and sociological works, by both Latina and non-Latina authors, that underscore the prevalence of …

Pain In Palliative And Supportive Care Outpatients: A Longitudinal Exploration, Jessica Erin Pullins Jan 2010

Pain In Palliative And Supportive Care Outpatients: A Longitudinal Exploration, Jessica Erin Pullins

All ETDs from UAB

This longitudinal observational study examined the pain experience of palliative care outpatients during their first four appointments. To illustrate the longitudinal methods used, the author first provides a general overview of the multilevel model for change and then applies it to the outpatients' pain data. Younger age and an existing or new opioid prescription at the first appointment were linked to higher pain intensity and interference scores. Pain intensity and interference trajectories were widely varied across appointments, with the overall effect of a gradual reduction in pain over time. The clinical and research implications of these results are discussed.

The Bcs Gap Equation For Asymmetric Fermionic Systems, Abraham Freiji Jan 2010

The Bcs Gap Equation For Asymmetric Fermionic Systems, Abraham Freiji

All ETDs from UAB

We present a rigorous analysis of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieer (BCS) functional for asymmetric fermionic systems with general pair interaction potentials. We relate the existence of a non-trivial solution to the non-linear BCS gap equation to the spectrum of certain linear operators. In addition, we derive upper and lower bounds on the asymptotic behavior of the critical temperature and energy gap (at zero temperature) for the BCS gap equation, describing asymmetric fermions interacting via a two-body interaction potential \lambdaV , in the small coupling limit. Our results hold for all values of the chemical potential.

Fabrication And Dynamic Mechanical Analysis Of Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticle /Gelatin Porous Scaffolds, Hicham K. Ghossein Jan 2010

Fabrication And Dynamic Mechanical Analysis Of Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticle /Gelatin Porous Scaffolds, Hicham K. Ghossein

All ETDs from UAB

The application of engineered biomaterial scaffolds for hard tissue repair critically depends on the scaffold's internal architecture at various length scales. The pore size, shape, surface morphology, and pore connectivity are among the most important factors that affect the scaffold's mechanical properties and biointegration. Reported in this thesis are the results of the investigation of porous constructs fabricated by a freeze-drying process from synthetic nanosized hydroxyapatite / gelatin (nanoHA/Gel) dispersions with different nanoHA/Gel ratios (nanoHA loading was varied from 0 to 50 % by weight). The fabricated scaffolds had porosity up to 90% with pore size in the range of …

Se Rã©Ã©Crire: L'Appropriation Du Langage Du Colonisateur, Une Lecture Du Chemin Des Ordalies D’Abdellatif Laã¢Bi, Nadia Miskowiec

LSU Master's Theses

After the independence of Morocco in 1956, the question of the language arose among Moroccan writers. Highly aware of its historical implications authors had to choose between a vernacular such as spoken Arabic or Berber and a traditionally written language such as classical Arabic or French, languages of the colonizers. From there arose the contested choice of French, perceived by some as a patriotic treason. Use of French was predicted to disappear, however some authors defended its use. One such author is Abdellatif Laâbi, father of the famous review Souffles created in 1966, that played a crucial role in defining …

This Doorknob Is On The Ceiling, Cody Tyler Arnall Jan 2010

This Doorknob Is On The Ceiling, Cody Tyler Arnall

LSU Master's Theses

This Doorknob is on the Ceiling is a thesis exhibition of sculptural works that explore the fusion of various domestic, industrial and commonplace objects. Some are new, but most of them are used and outdated. I explore and take advantage of the baggage that comes along with them, their history, their functions and what they suggest. My intention with these items is to both exploit and subvert the contextual boundaries which define them. I manipulate these objects in opposition to the way they are normally presented, encountered and understood, while leaving them recognizable. I am interested in obstructing function and …

Early Stage Adult Christian Formation In Emerging Northwest Culture, Robert E. Hunter Jan 2010

Early Stage Adult Christian Formation In Emerging Northwest Culture, Robert E. Hunter

Doctor of Ministry

The problem this dissertation addresses is that many churches, disciplers, catechists, and ecclesial leaders use lecture-based fonnats primarily when nurturing people new to the faith. The thesis of this paper is that a biblically sound, transformative model can be developed to form new disciples. The thesis provides the foundation for a ten-part curriculum presented as media artifact.

Section 2 describes other solutions and methodologies used currently to nurture people in the early stages of Christian formation. Some of the current methodologies include traditional Sunday school, sermon-based small groups, biblical discipleship, and group media discipleship. The fourth section develops the thesis …

Leading As You Were Designed: Applying A Career Assessment Tool For Pastoral Compatibility In Ministry, Cameron R. Garven Jan 2010

Leading As You Were Designed: Applying A Career Assessment Tool For Pastoral Compatibility In Ministry, Cameron R. Garven

Doctor of Ministry

The thesis of this paper is that pastors must be compatible with the churches they serve in order to have fruitful and long-lasting ministries, and proper assessment of compatibility can increase a pastor's success. Many pastors leave due to an incompatibility with churches they serve, and this paper asserts that pastors must be compatible in order to lead others. Research indicates that long tenure in a church contributes to effective ministry, and a better match between church and pastor contributes to a longer tenure. This dissertation uses the PRO Development™ (PRO D) assessment tool to help pastors discern their match …

Flower Symbolism As Female Sexual Metaphor, Andrea Frownfelter Jan 2010

Flower Symbolism As Female Sexual Metaphor, Andrea Frownfelter

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The watercolor paintings that I created from September 2009 to March 2010 use flowers as metaphorical subject matter to address issues and emotions associated with the topic of female sexuality. My goal was to use the long-standing tradition of flowers as symbols of female genitalia (which will be thoroughly explained in part two of this thesis) to allude to my personal attitudes, experiences, observations, and worries in a manner that would be easier for me to express and less abrasive for my audience to accept. Creating these watercolors was certainly therapeutic for me; I hope that other women who have …

Political Shifts In The Eastern Upper Peninsula Of Michigan During The Great Depression, Kristina Schwab Jan 2010

Political Shifts In The Eastern Upper Peninsula Of Michigan During The Great Depression, Kristina Schwab

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Regarded as one of the greatest struggles in American history, the Great Depression was a catalyst not only for economic change but also political change. The defeat of Hoover in 1,932 was one of the largest margins of victory by a Democratic presidential candidate ever seen. The victory of Franklin D. Roosevelt brought change to a nation struggling with unemployment. The efforts of the Works Progress Administration, Civilian Conservation Corps, Public Works Administration, along with numerous other employment programs, helped put people back to work. More importantly, though, these public works projects ranged from the improvement of roads and preservation …

Parental Absence, Benjamin Brainsby Jan 2010

Parental Absence, Benjamin Brainsby

Theses

The two short stories presented herein feature wildly different narratives operating under a common thematic umbrella; absent fathers.

While not always the central focus of the narrative, or the principle motivation of the protagonists, the fathers' absence in both stories casts a long shadow that defines their sense of happiness. Characters in both_ stories suffer from a feeling of incompleteness that is rooted in the longing for the absent father.

1n both cases the father's absence is beyond the protagonist's control and as such they must react to the affect it has on their lives and the situations that it, …

Upon Wakening, Joan M. Lovelace Jan 2010

Upon Wakening, Joan M. Lovelace

Theses

Upon awakening is a memoir essay that details the free fall from my prime into the disease of addiction, which took everything from me but the one thing I willingly would have given: my life. Instead, alcoholism dragged me on a horrifying public journey that began in a secret place in my mind.

At first, only I knew the trouble I was in, as I began drinking from the liquor bottles in the wet bar of our home. As my craving for booze grew beyond my control, I lost my career as a television journalist, my self-respect, my dignity and …

Konsep Malu Orang Melayu Dalam Novel Saga : Satu Kajian Sosiolinguistik., Norazlina Mohd. Kiram

Student Works (2010-2019)

The concept of shyness is an important concept as it encompasses the principles, behaviors, beliefs and rules that should be observed by its society. In relation to this, the concept of shyness among Malays is regarded as peculiar and unique as it is based on the Holy Quran and as-Sunnah. Basically, it is considered as a character awareness concept for the Malays which is very much related to self  worth, dignity and maintenance of one’s face. This being the starting point, the research  tries to put forward an analysis of the concept of shyness among Malays which is  explored in …

Flat Files: The Absence Of Vernacular Photography In Museum Collections, Kimberly Wolfe Jan 2010

Flat Files: The Absence Of Vernacular Photography In Museum Collections, Kimberly Wolfe

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will explore the causes and consequences of the absence of vernacular photography from museum collections. Through historical analysis of vernacular photography and a close interpretation of a contemporary family snapshot, I will argue that vernacular photographs are important objects of great cultural significance and poignant personal meaning. Photography has always defied categorization. It serves multiple functions and roles, is studied in a vast number of disciplines, and exists in a variety of institutions and collections. Furthermore, it is difficult to classify a single photograph. Vernacular photography thus poses a challenge to museum methods of sorting documents, artifacts, and …

Repressive Bodies, Transgressive Bodies : Dracula And The Feminine, Sharon Kostopoulos Jan 2010

Repressive Bodies, Transgressive Bodies : Dracula And The Feminine, Sharon Kostopoulos

Theses : Honours

Dracula has long been associated with the repressive qualities of Victorian society and the oppression of the emerging New Woman. However, taking into account that the novel is part of the gothic genre, a genre which endeavours to infringe the social boundaries in any given era, this thesis will demonstrate an equally visible and potent transgressive feminine element playing out in Dracula. Using Michel Foucault's idea of discourse to show how subjects are generated, the novel can be seen as facilitating both productive and repressive ideas of femininity. Power, as it operates through discourse, tends to produce its own resistance, …

The Dialogism Of Self And Other In Contemporary American Drama, Shih-Yi Huang Jan 2010

The Dialogism Of Self And Other In Contemporary American Drama, Shih-Yi Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This work is interdisciplinary in orientation and brings together American theatre (and culture) and contemporary ethical philosophy. I am introducing the French philosopher Emmanuel Lévinas and his theory of Self and Other to an analysis of contemporary American drama—a mode of approach that is new to the discipline of theatre studies. Lévinas’s insights are particularly relevant to the concerns of the 21st century and how we might rethink relationships and values. My work looks at contemporary American plays in terms of nationalism, gender politics, racial dynamics and ecological issues. I contend that these playwrights are attempting to go beyond conventional …

Bel Canto Rarities: A Performance Guide To Rarely Performed Tenor Arias From The Works Of Gaetano Donizetti, Zachary Bruton Jan 2010

Bel Canto Rarities: A Performance Guide To Rarely Performed Tenor Arias From The Works Of Gaetano Donizetti, Zachary Bruton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The subject of this dissertation is rarely performed tenor arias from operas of Gaetano Donizetti. Each of the arias chosen for this document was selected on the basis of its quality within the canon of Donizetti’s works in contrast with its deficient representation in the repertoire of the majority of student tenors. This document’s purpose is not to represent Donizetti’s development stylistically, dramatically, or in any other respect. Rather it presents a sampling of those arias which I feel are representative of some of the best writing for the tenor voice found in Donizetti’s operas, not only as admirable pieces …
