Passive Acoustic Studies Of Estuarine Fish Populations Of Southwest Florida, James Vincent Locascio
Passive Acoustic Studies Of Estuarine Fish Populations Of Southwest Florida, James Vincent Locascio
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recordings of fish sound production were made in Charlotte Harbor, Florida using Long Term Acoustic Recording Systems (LARS) programmed to record 10 seconds of sound every 10 minutes. Results demonstrated a strong circadian pattern in fish sound production that occurred within a few hours of dusk each evening. Sound production lasted on average 8.7 hrs each evening during the peak spawning season. LARS were deployed when Hurricane Charley crossed Charlotte Harbor in August, 2004. The hurricane did not inhibit nightly chorusing events of spawning fish. Rather, sound levels produced by spawning fish on the night of and 3 days after …

The Fanconi Anemia (Fa)/Brca Dna Damage Repair Pathway Is Regulated By Nf-Κb And Mediates Drug Resistance In Multiple Myeloma, Danielle N. Yarde
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Fanconi Anemia (FA)/BRCA DNA damage repair pathway plays a critical role in the cellular response to stress induced by DNA alkylating agents and greatly influences drug response in cancer treatment. We recently reported that FA/BRCA DNA damage repair pathway genes are overexpressed and causative for resistance in multiple myeloma (MM) cell lines selected for resistance to melphalan. We hypothesized that the FA/BRCA DNA damage repair pathway mediates response and resistance to chemotherapeutic agents used to treat multiple myeloma and other cancers, and targeting this pathway is vital to overcoming drug resistance. In this dissertation, we show that FA/BRCA pathway …

Requiem For The Orchard, Oliver De La Paz
Requiem For The Orchard, Oliver De La Paz
University of Akron Press Publications
These are vivid, visceral poems about coming of age in a place “where the Ferris Wheel/ was the tallest thing in the valley,” where a boy would learn “to fire a shotgun at nine and wring a chicken’s neck/ with one hand by twirling the bird and whipping it straight like a towel.” Looking back, the poet wrestles with the meaning of labor in the apple orchards and “the filthy dollars we’d wad into our pockets,” or the rites of passage that included sinking a knife into the flank of a dead chestnut horse. In spite of such hardscrabble cruelties—or …

Predicting Fear Of Recurrence And Protective Health Behaviors Using Protection Motivation Theory, Heather L. Mcginty
Predicting Fear Of Recurrence And Protective Health Behaviors Using Protection Motivation Theory, Heather L. Mcginty
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prior research suggests that fear of cancer recurrence is very common among cancer survivors. This study examined the extent to which Protection Motivation Theory variables of threat appraisal and coping appraisal accounted for differences in fear of recurrence and performance of health behaviors in cancer patients who recently completed treatment. It was hypothesized that greater fear of recurrence would be related to a combination of high threat appraisal and low coping appraisal. Also, it was hypothesized that higher rates of health behaviors would be related to higher threat appraisals for cancer recurrence and higher coping appraisals for reducing risk of …

Properties Of Carbon Nanotubes Under External Factors: Adsorption, Mechanical Deformations, Defects, And External Electric Fields, Yaroslav Shtogun
Properties Of Carbon Nanotubes Under External Factors: Adsorption, Mechanical Deformations, Defects, And External Electric Fields, Yaroslav Shtogun
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Carbon nanotubes have unique electronic, optical, mechanical, and transport properties which make them an important element of nanoscience and nanotechnology. However, successful application and integration of carbon nanotubes into new nanodevices requires fundamental understanding of their property changes under the influence of many external factors. This dissertation presents qualitative and quantitative theoretical understanding of property changes, while carbon nanotubes are exposed to the deformations, defects, external electric fields, and adsorption. Adsorption mechanisms due to Van der Waals dispersion forces are analyzed first for the interactions of graphitic materials and biological molecules with carbon nanotubes. In particular, the calculations are performed …
