Genre, Database, And The Anatomy Of The Digital Archive, Elizabeth J. Vincelette Apr 2010

Genre, Database, And The Anatomy Of The Digital Archive, Elizabeth J. Vincelette

English Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to define shared characteristics of literary digital archives, specifically to explore how conceptual and structural qualities of such archives express generic qualities. In order to describe digital media such as database or digital archives, scholars resort to metaphors, and this study offers the metaphor of anatomy as a generic inscription with historical and methodological implications. The definition of the anatomy genre draws from Northrop Frye's in Anatomy of Criticism, in which Frye describes how anatomies are characterized by proliferating lists, the mixing of prose and non-prose forms, and self-reflexivity--under the guise of knowledge …

I Have To Tell You Something, Edmund E. Dowe Apr 2010

I Have To Tell You Something, Edmund E. Dowe

English Theses & Dissertations

The poems of I Have to Tell You Something will hopefully invoke the spirit of duende, that city of sinister images Federico Garcia Lorca so passionately described. They are my attempt to make sense of the reality I wake to everyday, and they are a challenge to my perception and my audience's perception of the realities that have been created by the technological and digital machine of the 20th and 21st centuries. In these pages is a collection of highly imagistic poems, reminiscent of the imagist poetry of the late 1960s and early 1970s. They live by the …

The Way Of Sinners, Mary Westbrook Apr 2010

The Way Of Sinners, Mary Westbrook

English Theses & Dissertations

The Way of Sinners is a collection of short stories united by place and themes. The stories, most of which are told in first-person, take place in fictional and real towns around Virginia, in Tidewater, the Shenandoah Valley and the western part of the commonwealth, near Blacksburg. The stories concern women and girls who feel they have failed, who fear they cannot be redeemed. The characters want to be restored to dignity — to be whole again, good. Human nature stands in their way. The characters are keenly aware of slights and sins committed by and against them, and as …

Other People's Houses, David Williamson Apr 2010

Other People's Houses, David Williamson

English Theses & Dissertations

The stories in this collection concern the suburban demography as an American landscape, as unique as Manhattan or the West Coast or the Mississippi River or the Arizona desert, with its own lore, mythos, and expectations. These stories attempt to retell those myths and ask why expectations fall short, when they do.

These stories are similar in their exposition and context: male viewpoint characters who live in middle class neighborhoods and communities and spend their days battling anxiety and paranoia and fear and mystery and confusion. Each story represents a piece of suburbia and how a specific landscape and culture …

Though hardened by her life's circumstances, Beatrix receives undeserved grace. Flowers of Purgatory contemplates the nature of redemption, the burdens we bear, and the cost of letting them go.

Cyber This, Cyber That...So What?, Eric D. Trias, Bryan Bell Apr 2010

Cyber This, Cyber That...So What?, Eric D. Trias, Bryan Bell

Faculty Publications

This article endorses the idea that cyber operations may be conducted in all war-fighting domains: air, space, cyberspace, land, and sea. In addition, despite the immaturity of cyberspace operational doctrines, the doctrines from air and space remain relevant and applicable to the cyberspace domain. Cyber operations are just another set of tools in the commander's toolbox. Although cyber operations have distinct ways of achieving effects, from an Air Force perspective they are similar too the air and space operations that support air and space (and cyberspace) functions. Known and established cyber operations provide war fighters with viable options to kinetic …

Bonfire Night And Other Stories, Leslie Clements

English Theses & Dissertations

Bonfire Night and Other Stories is a collection of short stories that deal in the speculative subgenres of fiction writing. Embracing elements of the fantastic, these stories trace characters and their cultural heritage in the United Kingdom and United States. Under the surface of every innocuous situation, the past, history, and collective memory seep out from the cracks in common perception to expose the fragility of our world and our place in it. What Did I Do To Susan Orlean And Other Stories, Brian C. Wilson Apr 2010

What Did I Do To Susan Orlean And Other Stories, Brian C. Wilson

English Theses & Dissertations

From the seat of a bicycle, behind the stage of a lumberjack competition, atop a boatful of oyster shells, and from other unusual perspectives the nonfiction stories in this collection explore a variety of subjects. In some cases I position myself as an outsider, learning through research, interviews and observation. In others I begin as an outsider and then dive in personally, making myself the subject of the experiment. Through it all I hope to make readers, at least temporarily, as interested in online encyclopedias, fixed-wheel bicycles, replica schooners and hungry stingrays as I am.

The proper audience for the …

Masalah Penterjemahan Kolokasi Bahasa Arab Ke Bahasa Melayu : Satu Kajian Teks Tafsir., Saifullah Kamalie

Student Works (2010-2019)

Collocation is a universal linguistic phenomenon and has been a common concern among linguists, lexicographers as well as language pedagogues and those involved in translation works. Arabic language has paid special attention to collocation usage, although in the early days it had not been recognized nor termed as collocation. Arabic collocations have existed in the Jahiliah poetry, or Islamic texts such as the Holy Qur’an as well as in language and literature books. This thesis characterizes collocations in the Arabic language, by classifying grammatical and semantic distributional patterns of collocations and investigates the problems of its translation into Malay language. …

It demonstrates the interaction between macro-sociological modifications with changes in language choice patterns of the Bidayuh community, an ethnic minority located in East Malaysia. The motivation for the study is driven by the need to ascertain the direction of the changing language choice patterns of its community members, and the extent to which it is threatening the position of the mother tongue. Despite having a population of approximately 170,000 speakers, the Bidayuh language displays characteristics of a “threatened” language. The proximity of the Bidayuh speech community …

Surah al-Kahf is a distinctive surah that looks into the narrative discourse through retrospections of some of the most amazing tales that had ever happened in the history of human civilisation and customs. It has 110 verses comprising four main stories: The Story of Asha:b al-Kahf (Cave Dwellers), The Story of Sa:hib al- Jannatayn (Owner of Two Orchards), The Story of the Meeting of Prophet Musa (Moses) and Khidr, and The Story of Dhul-Qarnain. The Noetic Paschal Anthropos: Genesis 1:27 And The Theology Of The Divine Image In Early Paschal Literature, Dragos Andrei Giulea Apr 2010

The Noetic Paschal Anthropos: Genesis 1:27 And The Theology Of The Divine Image In Early Paschal Literature, Dragos Andrei Giulea

Dissertations (1934 -)

This study examines the theme of the heavenly Anthropos in the earliest extant paschal writings: Melito's Peri Pascha, Origen's Peri Pascha, and Pseudo-Hippolytus's In sanctum Pascha. Instead of analyzing these materials through the prism of such classical images as sacrifice and divine Lamb, the study investigates them through the perspective of the categories of heavenly Man and divine Image. The particular method of the study will be tradition criticism and will envision the paschal tradition of the heavenly luminous Anthropos as a development of the theophanic traditions of the Jewish Second Temple. Echoing such ancient passages as Genesis 1:27, Ezekiel …

In what follows, I will argue that two current theories about how our minds ascribe intentional psychological states to other people (so-called Theory of Mind) as well as to non-personal events that happen to us (a proposed Existential Theory of Mind) provide a rich interpretive framework for understanding the social and historical context of Kundera’s innovative aesthetics.

Of Horror And Humor : The Transformation Of The Grotesque Into The Gothic In The Novels Of Frances Burney, Brittany Taylor Apr 2010

Of Horror And Humor : The Transformation Of The Grotesque Into The Gothic In The Novels Of Frances Burney, Brittany Taylor

Honors Theses

This year was ushered in by a grand and most important event,—for at the latter end of January, the literary world was favoured with the first publication of the ingenious, learned, and most profound Fanny Burney!—I doubt not but this memorable affair will, in future times, mark the period whence chronologers will date the zenith of the polite arts in this island! This admirable authoress has named her most elaborate performance “EVELINA, OR A YOUNG LADY’S ENTRANCE INTO THE WORLD.” (Ellis 212)

When 1778 dawned, twenty-five-year-old Frances Burney was not the egotist this pronouncement in her diary might suggest. She …

Native But Foreign: Indigenous Transnational Refugees And Immigrants In The U.S.–Canadian And U.S.–Mexican Borderlands, 1880–Present, Brenden Rensink Apr 2010

Native But Foreign: Indigenous Transnational Refugees And Immigrants In The U.S.–Canadian And U.S.–Mexican Borderlands, 1880–Present, Brenden Rensink

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Post-Columbian borderlands between competing Euro-American empires and North America’s indigenous populations were complex multi-national and international landscapes. Nineteenth and twentieth-century transnational indigenous migration across U.S-Canadian and U.S-Mexican borders provide important narratives for better understanding these contested regions. During these years, Canada, the United States and Mexico increasingly strove to use the borders as barriers to define what Native peoples fell within the confines of their jurisdiction or responsibility. Concurrently, some Native groups used the geopolitical implications of imposed Euro-American borders to escape persecution and seek better conditions in newly defined “foreign” lands. These transnational narratives resulted in unique Native North …

Background Environmental Justice: An Extension Of Rawls's Political Liberalism, Edward Abplanalp Apr 2010

Background Environmental Justice: An Extension Of Rawls's Political Liberalism, Edward Abplanalp

Department of Philosophy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation extends John Rawls’s mature theory of justice out to address the environmental challenges that citizens of liberal democracies now face. Specifically, using Rawls’s framework of political liberalism, I piece together a theory of procedural justice to be applied to a constitutional democracy. I show how citizens of pluralistic democracies should apply this theory to environmental matters in a four stage contracting procedure. I argue that, if implemented, this extension to Rawls’s theory would secure background environmental justice. I explain why the theory can be viewed as a partially specified political conception of environmental pragmatism, and how it relates …
