Everything's Better In Moderation: Young Women's Gender Role Attitudes And Risky Sexual Behavior, Tamara Leech May 2010

Everything's Better In Moderation: Young Women's Gender Role Attitudes And Risky Sexual Behavior, Tamara Leech

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Purpose This study examines the association between gender role attitudes and risky sexual behavior among young women. Previous studies have posed seemingly contradictory arguments: that either traditional attitudes or egalitarian attitudes are associated with riskier behavior. Methods Data are based on the children of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, representing 520 sexually active 18–19-year-old women. Propensity radius matching was used to assess differences in rates of multiple sexual partners and sex outside of a committed relationship. Results Relative to moderate gender role attitudes, both egalitarian gender role attitudes and traditional gender role attitudes are associated with higher rates of …

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

A SALIENCE-BASED ANALYTIC METHOD APPLIED TO ANDRÉ JOLIVET’S CONCERTINO FOR TRUMPET, STRING ORCHESTRA, AND PIANO

Martin G. Bolt, M.M.

University of Nebraska, 2010

Adviser: Stanley V. Kleppinger

André Jolivet’s music is eclectic, and his compositional process is often enigmatic. Broadly speaking, Jolivet’s music falls into that category of twentieth-century repertoire described as post-tonal and pitch-centric.

This thesis will provide an analysis of Jolivet’s Concertino for Trumpet, String Orchestra, and Piano. It thus serves as a model of an analytic approach for post-tonal pitch-centric music of the twentieth century. My analytical method is based on the theories of Fred Lerdahl posited …

Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications

Research on the Waite-Kirby-Potter house in Westport, Massachusetts, included mapping historical resources visible on the surface and excavating 25 test pits and units near the house foundations in the fall of 2009. Field investigations were complemented by extensive documentary research including a complete chain of title and genealogical research on the three families who have owned the property between the late 17th century and the present. The visible historical features include elements associated with the former stone ender (the standing stone end and chimney, an adjacent brick chimney, and a stone-lined cellar hole), stone walls, a 19th-century barn foundation, a …

Power, Structure, Gender Relations And Community-Based Conservation: The Cawswe Study Of The Sariska Region, Rajasthan, India, Maria Costanza Torri May 2010

Power, Structure, Gender Relations And Community-Based Conservation: The Cawswe Study Of The Sariska Region, Rajasthan, India, Maria Costanza Torri

Journal of International Women's Studies

Most current community development projects have a built in gender component. Despite the WID, WED and GAD schools of thought there is still however a long way to go in order to effectively implement these principles in conservation projects. Merely getting women a place on the policy-making agenda is not enough, especially if it comes at the cost of promoting a simplistic and often wildly inaccurate picture of gender-environment relations. This article analyses the repercussions of community-based conservation on women in terms of use, access, and control of natural resources. The area chosen is the Sariska region of Rajasthan, India. …

Gender Analysis Of Women In The Philippine Agriculture And Their Occupational Issues, Jinky Leilanie Lu May 2010

Gender Analysis Of Women In The Philippine Agriculture And Their Occupational Issues, Jinky Leilanie Lu

Journal of International Women's Studies

Feminist research shows how gender, in interaction with other socioeconomic differentiation theories on class and ethnicity, influences agrarian transition, health patterns, and economic development. In the highland community where this study was conducted, women play a very important role in the production of vegetables and crops. At the same time, there are hazards facing these women predisposing them to certain occupational health issues. As such, this research study aimed to look into occupational issues of women, as well as certain cultural, political, socio-economic perceptions and attributes that affect women’s occupational issues. 251 women farmers from identified communities using cluster sampling …

She Dresses To Attract, He Perceives Seduction: A Gender Gap In Attribution Of Intent To Women’S Revealing Style Of Dress And Its Relation To Blaming The Victims Of Sexual Violence, Avigail Moor May 2010

She Dresses To Attract, He Perceives Seduction: A Gender Gap In Attribution Of Intent To Women’S Revealing Style Of Dress And Its Relation To Blaming The Victims Of Sexual Violence, Avigail Moor

Journal of International Women's Studies

Victims of sexual violence are often blamed for precipitating their own assault with their so-called “provocative” body-revealing style of dress, which is viewed as conveying consent for sexual advances. To explore some of the grounds for this allegation as well as its accurateness, the present study examines the attributions made by both sexes regarding the motivation for women’s sexualized appearance. The factual connection between revealing clothing and actual occurrences of sexual invasions is examined as well. The results demonstrate a gender-based attribution gap wherein men report perceiving the sexualized look as indicating an interest in sex and intent to seduce, …

Contradiction And The Role Of The ‘Floating Signifier’: Identity And The ‘New Woman’ In Italian Cartoons During Fascism, Efharis Mascha May 2010

Contradiction And The Role Of The ‘Floating Signifier’: Identity And The ‘New Woman’ In Italian Cartoons During Fascism, Efharis Mascha

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper addresses the issue of political cartooning during Italian fascism, with specific reference to the role of women, as it is symbolised in the cartoons (i.e.the woman-mother/care-taker/fascist/worker). The latter will be revealed through a careful study of the contradictions generated by fascism and the representation of this ‘New Woman’ in political satire. The caricatures I will examine belong strictly to the Left discourse. They received high circulation figures and characterised Italy’s popular culture during the 1920’s. Whilst fascism did not provide any space for women to join the high ranks of the PNF (Partito Nazionale Fascista), the Left similarly …

Upscaling Community-Arranged Preparedness For Preventing Maternal Mortality In Ghana: A Case Study Of Keta And Akatsi Districts Of Volta Region, Chuks J. Mba, Irene K. Aboh

Journal of International Women's Studies

The main objective of the study is to assess maternal health in Ghana using empirical evidence from Akatsi and Keta districts of the Volta Region. Interviews were conducted from a sample size of 6,250 respondents within the reproductive age group of 15-49 years drawn from both districts in 2007. The results show that most of the women had only basic education and were generally petty traders, farmers and fishmongers. Overwhelming majority of the women stated that there was no community-arranged preparedness to aid them in times of emergency obstetric care. A significant proportion of the women (about 30%) relied on …

A Survey Of Osteoporosis Risk Factors And Practices Among Jordanian Women, Lubna Abushaikha, Suha Omran

Journal of International Women's Studies

The aim of this study was to explore osteoporosis (OP) risk factors among Jordanian women. Osteoporosis (OP) is a chronic complex health problem for millions of women worldwide, 80% of whom are postmenopausal women. Unless prevented or treated, this silent disease will continue to limit both the quantity and quality of life of many older women and significantly add to the health care cost for this group. A sample of Jordanian women in different settings in Jordan (N=192; mean age=43years). The study was descriptive and data were collected over a two month period in 2005 with the use of a …

A Feminist Struggle? South African Hiv Activism As Feminist Politics, Katarina Jungar, Elina Oinas May 2010

A Feminist Struggle? South African Hiv Activism As Feminist Politics, Katarina Jungar, Elina Oinas

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper is a feminist reading of HIV activism in South Africa, of a social movement that does not describe itself as a women’s movement: it advocates both women’s and men’s, trans, hetero- and homosexual peoples’ rights for adequate health care and antiretroviral medication. Like many others, Chandra Talpade Mohanty suggests that today’s powerful feminism is found in anti-globalization movements that do not necessarily call themselves feminist. These critiques maintain that the theory, critique and activism of grass-root women across the globe, for example around anti-globalization, should also inform academic feminist discussions. This article studies discourses on HIV in Africa …

'Champions Of Contending Armies': The Ancient Rivalry Between Massachusetts And South Carolina, 1829-1856, William Merrell May 2010

'Champions Of Contending Armies': The Ancient Rivalry Between Massachusetts And South Carolina, 1829-1856, William Merrell

All Theses

The focus of this work is the 'ancient rivalry' between Massachusetts and South Carolina, as it played out in the antebellum era. Although little attention has been devoted exclusively to the study of this rivalry, it exercised a considerable degree of influence over the nation on its path to civil war. Most notably, this rivalry directly impacted the emergence of an American national identity between 1830 and 1860. The self-perpetuating rivalry between South Carolina and Massachusetts helped define the parameters of American identity, and ensured the eventual exclusion of South Carolina from such an identity. Filtered through three specific episodes, …

Image-Based Modeling Techniques For Artistic Rendering, Bynum Murray Iii May 2010

Image-Based Modeling Techniques For Artistic Rendering, Bynum Murray Iii

All Theses

This thesis presents various techniques for recreating and enhancing two-dimensional paintings and images in three-dimensional ways. The techniques include camera projection modeling, digital relief sculpture, and digital impasto. We also explore current problems of replicating and enhancing natural media and describe various solutions, along with their relative strengths and weaknesses. The importance of artistic skill in the implementation of these techniques is covered, along with implementation within the current industry applications Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter, and Pixologic Zbrush. The result is a set of methods for the digital artist to create effects that would not otherwise be possible.

Alterations, Michael Marks Ii May 2010

Alterations, Michael Marks Ii

All Theses

My work is an investigation into the physical and cognitive spaces that painting occupies as both image and object. By transplanting fragments of mechanical and digital reproductions into formal and conceptual participation, I seek to disrupt the significations of culturally accepted iconography and probe the locations of acceptance they normally inhabit. I employ strategies of manipulation, framing, and juxtaposition to visually suggest the presence of the original object through the parameters of the reproduced composite and implicate the presence of the institution by incorporating the gallery wall directly into a number of my compositions. By utilizing imagery from the art …

Some Kind Of Familiar Image, Brian Nogues May 2010

Some Kind Of Familiar Image, Brian Nogues

All Theses

I make images about images, sometimes about the ones that already exist in a given photographic outlet - be it the media, the web, magazines, periodicals, or the canon of art history, and occasionally, I make images fueled by the philosophy and aesthetics of these channels.
My role as a photographer is not that of a problem solver but rather a locator and creator of visual discrepancies. I locate something that strikes me as interesting or curious, perhaps the gaze of a dog in an Erwitt photograph, and then I find something else that is equally compelling, and combine them …

Rainbows And Sunshine: Experiencing Life And Art, Matthew Rink May 2010

Rainbows And Sunshine: Experiencing Life And Art, Matthew Rink

All Theses

In this body of work I create temporary public-interstices that provide enjoyment, respite and reflection within the everyday experience. These projects are living-breathing events where I act as the facilitator of pleasure or comfort to encourage the viewer to consider valuable moments in the present. These are alive with real-time tactility; something that can be eaten, witnessed, physically felt or shared.
Within this series, I challenge the ordinary by splicing in comfort, gratification and excitement at random to provide a temporary moment outside of the norm. These moments oppose the rampant drive for commodity; fueled by under-compensated over-working by offering …

Turning `The Angel Of The House' Out Of The House: Privacy In The Nineteenth Century Sensation Novel, Ashley Crider May 2010

Turning `The Angel Of The House' Out Of The House: Privacy In The Nineteenth Century Sensation Novel, Ashley Crider

All Theses

This thesis explores nineteenth-century transatlantic sensation fiction. My examination of George Lippard's The Quaker City: Or the Monks of Monk HallThe Quaker City: Or the Monks of Monk Hall (1845) and Mary Elizabeth Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret investigates the construction of the Angel of the House in both the domestic and public spheres. I pay particular attention to `feminine' spaces such as the boudoir, and how the sensation novel represents physical space and commodity culture to comment on female sexual agency and how nineteenth century classes constructed womanhood. In addition to Braddon and Lippard, my thesis explores such American texts …

At Their Own Deliberate Speed: The Desegregation Of The Public Schools In Beaufort County, South Carolina, Anne Kelsey May 2010

At Their Own Deliberate Speed: The Desegregation Of The Public Schools In Beaufort County, South Carolina, Anne Kelsey

All Theses

This project studies public school desegregation in Beaufort County, South Carolina, from 1954-1973. Beaufort County is a community that historians have overlooked in the narrative of southern school desegregation. Just like other southern communities, Beaufort County's school desegregation story must be studied from multiple angles and across time. By focusing on a rural county on the coast of South Carolina, this project asks how school desegregation occurred in areas outside of the `visible South.' Within this narrative, this project approaches Beaufort County's school desegregation from two historiographical angles--one top-down and the other bottom-up. The first explores how federal mandates and …

The Intercultural Ancients: A Mock Exhibit Exploring The Cross-Cultural Influences In The Representation Of Women In Ancient South Asian And Ancient Mediterranean Art, Roshni Bhambhwani

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

This project is a mock-exhibit which explores the existence the crosscultural diffusion between the early people of the Mediterranean (from the Balkan Peninsula to the Syrian coast) and South Asia (from Afghanistan to Bhutan). The components of the project are an exhibition catalog and 3D exhibition design. Although there is substantial evidence of ancient contacts between the Aegean (Balkan Peninsula, Crete, Cyclades) and the Near East (Syria, South Turkey, Eastern Iraq, Western Iran) and South Asia and the Near East, there is little scholarship in the evidence-scarce topic of communication between the Aegean and South Asia. This exhibit broaches this …

Meet Pig Guy: An Animated Character Study In 3-D, Michael Lebson

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The 3D animation, “Meet Pig Guy,” is an introduction to the character Pig Guy, who I have designed over the past year and a half. Pig Guy is a world renowned super-hero that is enormously successful in his professional endeavors, but has flaws, shortcomings, and imperfections that make him very human. In this one minute and 20 second long animated short, we get a glimpse into his behaviors through a candid situation of himself in his basement. “Meet Pig Guy” presents us with a problem of his, the abuse of his superpower to eat anything he wants.

Fashion Campaign: Katy Ann Lyons New York, Katy Ann Lyons

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Over the past four years, my skill, technique, and style as a fashion design major at Syracuse University has grown and developed enormously. I came to college with no prior experience in sewing or garment construction but after much practice and patience, I have learned the basic skills necessary to design and to make wearable clothing. Consequently, when it came time to choose a topic for my Capstone project, I sought a creative project that would serve to showcase the expertise I have developed during my time in school.

The concept of my project is an advertising campaign featuring the …
