Breathe... Keep Breathing., Shaun C. Kiel May 2010

Breathe... Keep Breathing., Shaun C. Kiel

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

I work with short-duration seamless video loops. My work simultaneously depicts and emulates the material composition of time, specifically how action composes time and how time can compose or construct objects.

My work is self-reflexive. Self-reflexive means that a product actively considers or examines its own production. In video this means breaking either the illusion of depicted time as real time or the illusion of the depicted image as real space. Video loops are self-reflexive by function. Their periodic recurrence points out the artifact of the medium.

The periodic recurrence of video loops also changes the narrative quality of the …

Advanced Studies In The Graphic Novel, Thomas Barkman May 2010

Advanced Studies In The Graphic Novel, Thomas Barkman

Senior Honors Projects

Advanced Studies in the Graphic Novel entails a practical intimacy with the form. My work serves to elucidate only some of the many differences between the graphic novel and traditional literature, to complicate the use of written language in the form as it relates to images, to address confrontations with publishing, and to share intimately the process and mechanisms by which my effort functions.

The paper will reveal the guts of the effort (itself a graphic novel) and in doing so will highlight issues as they uniquely relate to the form, and hopefully encourage others to attempt such work. The …

The Postsecret Phenomenon: A Contemporary Application Of Existential Psychotherapy, Dan Martin May 2010

The Postsecret Phenomenon: A Contemporary Application Of Existential Psychotherapy, Dan Martin

Senior Honors Projects

In November 2004, as a whimsical break from his monotonous job, Frank Warren decided he would start a small art project in his community. This idea, which he entitled “PostSecret,” involved leaving blank post cards in various public locations that simply asked to “Share a Secret” and listed a few guidelines. Frank’s goal was to “create this non-judgmental, safe place where people could feel comfortable sharing parts of their lives that they've never told a soul.” What he expected to be a small result became a weekly blog, five published books, a traveling art gallery, and a lecture series given …

Defining A Metaphorical Space To Speak From : Exploring The Relationship Between Women And Place Within Gloria Naylor's The Women Of Brewster Place And Toni Morrison's Sula, Adriana Maria Immediate May 2010

Defining A Metaphorical Space To Speak From : Exploring The Relationship Between Women And Place Within Gloria Naylor's The Women Of Brewster Place And Toni Morrison's Sula, Adriana Maria Immediate

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis explores the complex yet indispensable relationship that exists between the Black female character and place in Gloria Naylor’s novel The Women of Brewster Place and Toni Morrison’s novel Sula. The representation of place, both landscape and homeplace, are examined through a close reading of language, particularly through metaphorical elements. Naylor and Morrison employ metaphorical elements to not only emphasize each woman’s intimate engagement with her sense of place, but also to acknowledge the transformative powers that place wields over each woman’s identity. For each woman that has been suppressed and silenced within a patriarchal society, the home becomes …

Disrupting Social Order : The Widows Of Pride And Prejudice And Sense And Sensibility, Jacklyn Grace Ievoli May 2010

Disrupting Social Order : The Widows Of Pride And Prejudice And Sense And Sensibility, Jacklyn Grace Ievoli

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis explores the power struggle between the widows and young men in Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. The focus is specifically on the power struggle regarding marriage: the widow endeavors to arrange the man’s marriage, while the man fights to regain his agency and masculinity by manying whom he chooses. This thesis examines the implications of these struggles between male and female and arranged and companionate marriages.

This thesis will also discuss the stylistic reflection of these struggles in the text. Jane Austen gives us male characters who are under the domination of a wealthy widow. While …

The Function Of Seduction In Guy De Maupassant's Novels : Bel-Ami, Une Vie And Pierre Et Jean, Ilkay Ozdemir May 2010

The Function Of Seduction In Guy De Maupassant's Novels : Bel-Ami, Une Vie And Pierre Et Jean, Ilkay Ozdemir

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

From Goethe to Maupassant, the act of seduction has fascinated writers. Consequently, seduction —as stimulation of love and pleasure- has been discussed often; however, its psychological motivations (other than pleasure), and its consequences have not been sufficiently studied, particularly with regard to the works of the French author Guy de Maupassant. When analyzing the notion of seduction in Maupassant’s works, many critics, such as Mary Donaldson-Evans or Nicholas White, evoke its sexual nature and its narrative manifestations, but no one has specifically written about the driving force behind the act of seduction. Nor has anyone remarked upon the paradoxical nature …

‘But They Would Not Teach Her To Play’ : Child Heroines, Fantasy, And The Victorian Debate On Female Education, Nicole Papaioannou May 2010

‘But They Would Not Teach Her To Play’ : Child Heroines, Fantasy, And The Victorian Debate On Female Education, Nicole Papaioannou

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

For England, the nineteenth century was a time of transformation. The landscape of England changed rapidly as industrialization and urbanization took hold of the nation. The population boomed, and children overpopulated cities and towns. With so many youngsters running about, mass education became a major public concern. By the midnineteenth century, the sad state of the nation’s public education system had been exposed by the Newcastle Committee, and reforms were beginning to take place.

In particular, the education available for females came under scrutiny. Many lower class girls left school unable to read, write, or perform basic mathematics, while middle …

Walk-In Tuen Mun, Ying Chi, Stella Tang

Artists-in-Residence Programme : Exhibition Catalogues

A Residency Project by Tang Ying Chi

The project was started with one photographic image of a Tuen Mun street scene. The image was then saved to the computer and projected onto a small canvas with a projector. Students, staff and visitors from Lingnan University were invited to visit the studio and trace the projected images using acrylic paints. These participants came at different times and worked individually or with others who were known or unknown to them.
