This paper analyses the novel Saint-Germain ou la négociation, which appears to hide a controversial discourse under a classic form. a special attention is given to the last chapter to show how this end modifies the novel’s reception. Finally, it is the whole neoclassic aesthetics that seems to be violate.
This paper analyses the duel as a central motive in Marcel Proust’s novel À la recherche du temps perdu. In the novels cycle, it appears that the occasions the men have to fight or to watch a duel help to understand why that violent practice increased during the last decade before the second World War. The practice seems to be monstrous morally and socially.
Roland Brival Et Le Métissage:Un Nouvel Humanisme, Yolande Aline Helm
Roland Brival Et Le Métissage:Un Nouvel Humanisme, Yolande Aline Helm
the article focalizes on roland Brival’s conception of “métissage” in his fiction texts:for him, it is synonymous to a new “humanism”. i revisit the theories which have permeate French caribbean literature (negritude, creolity, creolization). they are not synonymous of “métissage”; in fact, Brival’s vision is apart from the “creolity” movement.
Immigration and otherness represent core concerns in contemporary society and, as such, give rise to debate and discussion in many disciplines. the question of otherness also arises as a recurrent and key subject in the field of literature. Tahar Ben Jelloun’s novel Partir is replete with the ambivalence of otherness: attraction/aversion; difference/similarity; lack/exile; native/foreigner; close/distant; normal/deviant and as such provides a laboratory where the expression of otherness in discourse can be dissected. We will examine the perception and the issue of otherness in the novel as well as the strength of its representations.
Images De Femmes: Une H/Histoire De La France En Algérie À Travers Les Carnets D’Orient De Jacques Ferrandez, Carla Calargé
Images De Femmes: Une H/Histoire De La France En Algérie À Travers Les Carnets D’Orient De Jacques Ferrandez, Carla Calargé
My article analyses the representation of women in the Carnets d’Orient, a graphic novel series that tells the (hi)story of Algeria since its colonial conquest by the French army until its independence in 1962. I argue that the representation of women in the series varies not only according to the periods represented in the work, but also and more importantly according to the evolution that took place in the author himself while working on the series. the essay is organized in three parts according to three historical periods. The first period is that of the colonial conquest of Algeria (1830-1872) …
Cung Giu Nguyên is known as one of the most important francophone writers in Vietnam, especially with novels such as Le fils de la baleine, Le domaine maudit and Le boujoum. Each of these works hides behind the mythical world of writing the author’s meditations on the hectic, chaotic and absurd realities. Le domaine maudit is the result of these reflections. It deals mainly with misfortune suffered by the individual, family and society. The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct the enunciation of the narrative.
Owing to Georges Schéhadé’s investment of powers of dreams which lead to existence and generate thoughts out of any preset direction, Georges Schéhadé’s theatre can be considered very close to surrealism. These powers of dreams can rediscover the world, give access to another reality and resolve fundamental life questions. In addition, Georges Schéhadé’s theatre and surrealism are similar in resorting to mysterious practices, occult research and the world of the “marvellous” which emanates from the world of dreams. This latter world consists of extraordinary random events or premonitions, visions, perceptions and sensations bringing about confusion of identities and a strange …

Mercy Mercy Me (The Media Ecology): Technology, Agency, And "Cleavage" Of The Musical Text, Arthur J. Bamford
Mercy Mercy Me (The Media Ecology): Technology, Agency, And "Cleavage" Of The Musical Text, Arthur J. Bamford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores changes that occurred in popular music during the 1960s and early 1970s through case studies involving three significant albums released in 1971 and 1972: Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, Sly and the Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On, and Stevie Wonder's Talking Book. These albums deserve attention particularly because, as this thesis argues, existing research on the cultural significance of popular music has focused largely on the periods before or after the 1970s and research on music-making technologies has focused largely on white artists or groups from the late 1960s. Addressing this blind …
Trust, Repentance, And Apocalyptic Zionism: Basilea Schlink And The Evangelical Sisterhood Of Mary Respond To War, George Faithful
Trust, Repentance, And Apocalyptic Zionism: Basilea Schlink And The Evangelical Sisterhood Of Mary Respond To War, George Faithful
Collected Faculty Scholarship
Wars past, present, and future have shaped the development of the Evangelical Sisterhood of Mary. Mother Basilea Schlink wrote that her sisterhood was “a child of the last war,” referring to the Second World War. Her vision for her sisterhood was equally shaped by the Cold War and by her expectations of the imminent nuclear world war that would usher in the Apocalypse. To these wars Mother Basilea and her sisterhood responded with a radical trust in God, daily individual and corporate repentance, and unwavering support for God’s Old Testament people, the Jews, and, by extension, the State of Israel. …
Timothy Dwight Encounters The Indians: Greenfield Hill And Travels Through New York And New England, Ann Brunjes
Timothy Dwight Encounters The Indians: Greenfield Hill And Travels Through New York And New England, Ann Brunjes
Bridgewater Review
Late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Americans, much like twenty-first-century Americans, had a hard time imagining how a heterogeneous, mobile and growing population could be brought under one ideological and governmental roof. And for many prominent Americans in the early days of the nation, the lingering issue of the “Indian problem” posed its own peculiar challenges. Timothy Dwight (1752–1817), author, President of Yale College, and minister of the town of Greenfield, Connecticut. Dwight voiced his concerns through a variety of genres, including the pastoral-epic poem, Greenfield Hill (1794), and Travels in New England and New York (1822).

Human Capital, Education, And Entrepreneurs: Evidence From The Yangtze River Delta, Zhining Hu, Jianghuai Zheng, Jialing Wang
Economics Faculty Publications
This paper seeks to examine the relationship between education demand and entrepreneurs in the process of enhancing the growth of human capital in China. We develop a theoretical model that incorporates the important roles played by human capital, education and entrepreneurs. Then, we derive an immigration condition under which the demand for education depends on the existence of entrepreneurs. Finally, we test whether this condition holds true in China, using a panel data set from the Yangtze River Delta which is considered a key barometer of Chinese economy. The empirical results reveal a significant positive relationship between entrepreneurs and education …

Review: Michael C. Carhart, The Science Of Culture In Enlightenment Germany, Andre Wakefield
Review: Michael C. Carhart, The Science Of Culture In Enlightenment Germany, Andre Wakefield
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
This is a book review of The Science of Culture in Enlightenment Germany, by Michael C. Carhart. It is an entertaining book. Its chapters are organized around a series of vignettes: Carsten Niebuhr on camelback negotiating with his Bedouin guides; feral French children skinning rabbits with their bare hands; English gentlemen in Syrian deserts; Captian Cooks lieutenants carving "steaks" from teh severed heads of war victims. In case you've lost your bearings, let me assure you that The Science of Culture in Enlightenment Germany is indeed about Enlightenment Germany. But as the structure of the chapters suggests, Michael Carhart …
Review: Karin Hartbecke, Zwischen Fürstenwillkür Und Menschheitswohl: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Als Bibliothekar, Andre Wakefield
Review: Karin Hartbecke, Zwischen Fürstenwillkür Und Menschheitswohl: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Als Bibliothekar, Andre Wakefield
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
This is a book review of Zwischen Fürstenwillkür und Menschheitswohl: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz als Bibliothekar, edited by Karin Hartbecke. The title of the volume—at least the part before the colon—is misleading. This is not really a book about the tension between human welfare and absolute monarchy. It is instead an extended effort to reconstruct Leibniz's practices of categorizing and acquiring books; it is also about the relationship between Leibniz's written reflections on categorizing books and those practices.

Rebirth Of A Strategic Continent?: Problematizing Africa As A Geostrategic Zone, Abou B. Bamba
Rebirth Of A Strategic Continent?: Problematizing Africa As A Geostrategic Zone, Abou B. Bamba
History Faculty Publications
At a time when the U.S. Department of Defense is putting the finishing touches to the establishment of a military command for Africa (known as AFRICOM) and the People’s Republic of China’s influence on the continent seems to be on the rise, a detour through the history of America’s past geographical imaginations of Africa appears as a necessity. This is especially crucial since the current constructions of the African continent as a strategic place in both policy and military circles seems to echo the geodiscursive representations of Africa during the Second World War. In fact, it was in the early …
