This study seeks to expand the scope of assimilation theory by integrating it with elements of routine activities theory to better understand what influence assimilation has in regard to violent victimization. Specifically, the purpose of this study is to determine whether or not differences in victimization rates between foreign-born and native-born Hispanic youth are related to variations in emotional guardianship. Emotional guardianship refers to the aspect of relationships (i.e., affection and communication) between Hispanic youth and their parents that serve to protect the youth from being victimized. I hypothesize that foreign-born Hispanics have greater emotional guardianship than native-born Hispanics, and …

During the mid to late 1950s, Hoxie and Little Rock were Arkansas communities that experienced social unrest and violence when their public schools began to desegregate. White Citizens' Council of Arkansas and White America Incorporated were segregationist groups they attempted to prevent integration at Hoxie but failed because their leaders publicly asked local citizens to resort to violence to stop desegregation of local classrooms. The Capital Citizens' Council and the Mothers' League were anti-integrationist organizations in Little Rock that adapted from the mistakes committed at Hoxie. In discussions about the women's rights, organizations such as the National Organization for Women or the National American Woman Suffrage Association often overshadow the contributions of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). Most know of the WCTU's efforts against alcohol but little is known about the group's work toward woman's suffrage. In fact, the Little Rock organization became one of the WCTU's strongest local unions. It worked to change the lives of women and children not only in the city, but also statewide. This thesis is a collection of nonfiction narrative essays. It reveals an examination of my life from childhood through several crises, recounting episodes within a dysfunctional nuclear family, marriage at an early age, and serious illness in my twenties. The autobiographical pieces reveal my journey out of childhood poverty, to becoming a successful parent, eventually divorcing, and entering college as an adult student. Each piece tells part of my story in coming closer to self-actualization and independence. It begins with a brief introduction followed by seven chapters. The purpose of this study is to examine the development of historic districts in the United States and to then use the case study of Argenta to draw specific conclusions about the implementation and effectiveness of the historic district approach. An examination of literary background and the expression of sexuality in The Dirty Girls Social Club by Alisa Valdes Rodriguez indicates that not only does the writing of this author further the traditions and evolution of Latina and Latin American women's literature, but it also seeks to break barriers with its forthright treatment of sexuality. Toward A Retention-Focused Compostion Pedagogy: The Composition Classroom As A Space To Promote Retention, Mark Isbell

Retention scholarship and theory is discussed, synthesized, and brought into juxtaposition with concepts and practices of composition pedagogy in order to elicit an understanding of the role that composition pedagogy might play in retention initiatives. Surveys conducted at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Department of Creative Writing are drawn on to determine what practices might be seen as "retention friendly" in light of the review of retention scholarship. Empirical data is described that shows a correlation between participation in composition classes at UALR and increased student retention. 關於《說文》古文與籀文的關係，以學者王國維（1877-1927）的說法影響最 大，王氏於其研究中數次提到「秦用籀文，六國用古文」的論點，即認為古文與 籀文為兩種不同的文字體系，兩者無甚關係。近代學者何琳儀（1943-2007）則持 不同的見解，何氏嘗試以古、籀文相同的文字為例，嘗試證明兩者並不能全然劃 分，何氏更指出，籀文可能是古文的源頭，於戰國時期，古、籀文才劃分成兩個 體系。

《說文》古、籀文的關係，仍未有具體清晰的結論。由此，本論文以《說文》 古文與籀文為研究核心，運用比對與統計的方法，嘗試分析及釐清兩者之間的關 係。本論文所採用的「字符、部件比對法」，先將古、籀文分別拆分成構意最小 的部件，並歸納出「個體字符」、「複合部件」與「基礎部件」三批材料，再將古、 籀文的資料相互比較分析，嘗試從最仔細的部件著手，分析古、籀文之間的異同 與關係。除古、籀文的直接比對外，本論文會利用依從「字符、部件比對法」所 分拆出的古、籀文材料，與三批不同的文字材料比對，三批材料分別為西周金文、 戰國文字，以及《說文》小篆，嘗試以不同時代的文字為佐證，並統計當中的數 據，以進一步展示《說文》古、籀文的異同之處，並探討兩者與西周金文、戰國 文字，以及《說文》小篆的關係。

In this investigation, I analyzed the websites of three community foundations and interviewed communications personnel from each foundation to determine how and to what extent their websites address the rhetorical challenges implied by ongoing changes in the field that necessitate a more collaborative, community-oriented approach. The stated key messages of the personnel I interviewed emphasize community involvement and partnership, yet their comments indicate that they view their websites as tools for informing rather than interacting. The sites' structure and functionality foreground institutional information and push community-oriented and interactive content to the periphery. This thesis examines the life and career of Benjamin T. Laney, Jr., the thirty-third governor of Arkansas, who, in full embrace of his conservative affiliation, left a progressive legislative legacy to the State of Arkansas. Little has been written about Laney, and this study attempts a comprehensive exploration of his political career, the legislative accomplishments of his administration, his involvement with the Dixiecrat movement in 1948, and career as a former governor. Using Laney's papers, including letters, speeches, and news clippings, this study also seeks to answer why Laney never fully committed to the Dixiecrat movement, a moniker that impacted …

Teaching writing is about more than just the writing itself. It's about effective communication between students and teachers, which should create a positive and productive writing environment. However, within conversations, challenges of authority are likely to occur. This project discusses the pitfalls of communication between teaching assistants and students in the first-year-writing classroom. These pitfalls are defined as discourse violations, and are further explained and analyzed using concepts of language theory. Case studies of discourse violation scenarios are presented for discussion. FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.
