Frat Star, Nathan Andrew Holic Jan 2007

Frat Star, Nathan Andrew Holic

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, a social novel in the tradition of Tom Wolfe's The Bonfire of the Vanities and Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, is all at once an attentive first-person study of a twenty-something man close to his cracking point in his first post-college job, a detailed expose of national fraternities, and the sweeping panoramic view of an entire generation of over-programmed college students searching for direction. Frat Star follows a fragile college graduate named Charles Washington, who takes a position as an "Educational Consultant" with a national fraternity in his first semester after graduation. For sixteen …

Obedience—How Crucial? 1 Corinthians 3:15b: Saved Anyway, Or A Misunderstood Afterthought?, Kent Yinger Jan 2007

Obedience—How Crucial? 1 Corinthians 3:15b: Saved Anyway, Or A Misunderstood Afterthought?, Kent Yinger

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

In discussions of the place of obedience in Christians’ final salvation, 1 Cor 3:15 has often played a role (“saved as through fire”). The nature of this text as a very limited caveat in Paul’s argument will be contrasted with most other readings throughout its history of interpretation. The latter take the seemingly comforting tone of v 15b (“will be saved”) to be theologically primary, rather than the tone of warning (“each builder must choose with care how to build,” v 10b). The paper will contend, instead, that 1 Cor 3:15b functions as an afterthought in Paul’s immediate argument (3:5-17). …

“The Grand Experiment:” Modeling Adult Learning With Adult-Ministry Students, Laura Simmons Jan 2007

“The Grand Experiment:” Modeling Adult Learning With Adult-Ministry Students, Laura Simmons

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Adult-learning theory challenges faculty to adapt their teaching to certain characteristics of adult learners, including self-direction: if adults direct the bulk of their lives outside of school, so should they be permitted to direct their own educational experiences. To what extent is self-directed learning an optimal, or even realistic, methodology for seminary teaching? Does it matter what subjects we are teaching? This essay details an experiment with self-directed learning in a seminary ministry class: what worked; what might be altered before experimenting again with this teaching methodology; how it challenges our view of ourselves as faculty to teach in this …

Native American Oral History And Cultural Interpretation In Rocky Mountain National Park, Sally Mcbeth Jan 2007

Native American Oral History And Cultural Interpretation In Rocky Mountain National Park, Sally Mcbeth

Anthropology Faculty Publications

From the document: The original design of this project was as an oral history. Indeed, in my proposal I stated that “Native Americans who retain the stories, recollections, and remembered traditions of their individual tribes and cultures are rapidly disappearing.” And while I thought I might discover existing memories or stories about the region, it was clear from the beginning that recollections specific to locales within the Park and surrounding area did not exist. Indigenous peoples were separated from these homelands by the 1870s and the last recorded date of hunting and/or camping in and around the Park area was …

The Rebirth Of Consciousness, Urszula Blaszak Jan 2007

The Rebirth Of Consciousness, Urszula Blaszak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human beings encounter cascades of a plethora of experiences, one after another, every single microsecond of our lives. There are many things happening around. The world is full of events and occurrences. As they happen, the mind reacts to every individual input. This is a very exhausting and difficult. Thus, people have developed a process of self-defense against this horrible mishmash of information. Their minds have this amazing capacity of sorting them out and making sense out of them. Humankind's survival depends on that. If one does not sort all this information out, one might not be able to make …

An Internal Connection Between Logic And Rhetoric, And A Legitimate Foundation For Knowledge, Jeremy Barris Jan 2007

An Internal Connection Between Logic And Rhetoric, And A Legitimate Foundation For Knowledge, Jeremy Barris

Humanities Faculty Research

It has often been argued that a theory that tries to justify itself fully is either viciously circular or produces an infinite regress of justifications. Thinking that tries to establish ultimate foundations for itself seems in the end to base itself on nothing but its own insistence that it is right. As a result it offers no real knowledge. As Robert Almeder notes, for example, a strong appeal attaches to arguments such as that "there is no non-question-begging way to answer questions such as 'Are you justified in believing your definition of justification?'"

The study of the past is essential for our understanding of the present day. In other words, if you want to know something about your own time, a good place to start is to study the previous historical events.

Black The Libertarian, David P. Hunt Jan 2007

Black The Libertarian, David P. Hunt

Philosophy

The most serious challenge to Frankfurt-type counterexamples to the Principle of Alternate Possibilities (PAP) comes in the form of a dilemma: either the counterexample presupposes determinism, in which case it begs the question; or it does not presuppose determinism, in which case it fails to deliver on its promise to eliminate all alternatives that might plausibly be thought to satisfy PAP. I respond to this challenge with a counterexample in whichconsidering an alternative course of action is anecessary condition fordeciding to act otherwise, and the agent does not in fact consider the alternative. I call this a …
