Book Review This book is the fifth in the GOFIV series to examine how hieroglyphic "determinatives" (or "script classifiers") reflect the way the ancient Egyptians classified and categorized the elements of their world. The bulk of the book is a section-by-section transliteration, translation, and analysis of the Ramesside royal decrees, divided into four generic subsets:

Visual And Verbal Rhetoric In Howard Chandler Christy's War-Related Posters Of Women During The World War I Era: A Feminist, Mary Ellen Gomrad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the development of a series of posters created by Howard Chandler Christy during the World War I era. During this time, Christy was a Department of Pictorial Publicity (DPP) committee artist commissioned by the committee chair, Charles Dana Gibson. The DPP was part of the Committee on Public Information (CPI) developed by the Woodrow Wilson administration to generate the propaganda necessary to gain the support of the American people to enter World War I. The CPI was headed up by George Creel, a journalist and politician, who used advertising techniques to create the first full-scale propaganda effort …

Images For Iconoclasts: Images Of Confucius In The Cultural Revolution, Deborah A. Sommer (司馬黛蘭) Jan 2007

Images For Iconoclasts: Images Of Confucius In The Cultural Revolution, Deborah A. Sommer (司馬黛蘭)

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Confucius died and was buried in 479 B.C.E., and he was never seen again. Or so one would think. “You may forget me as I once was,” Confucius reminds us in the Zhuangzi, "but there is something unforgettable about me that will still live on." Confucius’s physical frame was concealed from sight below ground, but his body and face were not forgotten either by his followers or his detractors, each of whom remembered him (or remembered him) in different ways. People created semblances of Confucius that reflected their own visions of the past, and constructions of his body took on …

"Two Nice Girls Sitting On A Park Bench Talking": Why It Matters Who Interprets Space In Diana Son's Stopkiss, Jennifer Lindenberger Jan 2007

"Two Nice Girls Sitting On A Park Bench Talking": Why It Matters Who Interprets Space In Diana Son's Stopkiss, Jennifer Lindenberger

The Corinthian

In Diana Son's play StopKiss we are confronted with two women who are the survivors of a hate crime based on perceived sexual orientation. This attack takes place in New York's West Village. The location of the park and assumptions about this park are not the main focus of the play; nevertheless, this space is centrally important to the play and the audience. My argument revolves around a central premise: while both the gay and straight communities see the West Village as primarily "gay space," the straight community assumes that gay [-occupied] space also means space safe for LGBT persons. …

Divine Love In The Writings Of Heloise Of The Paraclete, Carmel Posa Jan 2007

Divine Love In The Writings Of Heloise Of The Paraclete, Carmel Posa

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

Heloise of the Paraclete has appeared in the volumes of Tjurunga several times over the years. Nevertheless, for those readers who know little of this famed abbess of the twelfth century, perhaps it is worthwhile reiterating a little of her story before focusing on yet another important aspect of her fascinating writings. Heloise of the Paraclete (d.1164) is perhaps better known for her brief, yet passionate love affair with Peter Abelard (1079-1142), arguably the greatest intellectual mind of the twelfth century. Briefly stated, in the course of their famous and spectacular love affair, Heloise became pregnant, was eventually married to …

The Yellow Envelope, J. Christian Bay Jan 2007

The Yellow Envelope, J. Christian Bay

The Bridge

This short story is an example of a collaboration of two outstandingly productive Danish Americans, one in literature, the other in the world of art. The names of J. Christian Bay (1871-1962) and Christian Petersen (1885-1961) have appeared before in The Bridge. Two translations of Bay's work have been published; the first was in an article about an account of a fictional visit to Chicago by Hans Christian Andersen.2 The second was a translation of his article about the plant scientist Niels Ebbesen Hansen.3 Two reviews of books about Christian Petersen have appeared in The Bridge.4

A Question Of Motive: The Chris Madsen Story Revisited, Johan Windmuller Jan 2007

A Question Of Motive: The Chris Madsen Story Revisited, Johan Windmuller

The Bridge

Upon first hearing the story of Chris Madsen, I recall the vivid intrigue I experienced when learning of a Danish immigrant who had become a famous lawman in the United States. As an immigrant from Denmark and a member of the American police brethren myself, I seemed to have discovered a kindred spirit in Madsen. I promptly began reading bits and pieces of information and soon had the basics down. Here was a real life hero who had served in three armies, surviving wars and Indian attacks and on top of that had enough gusto to join up with the …

Antony Flew’S Deism Revisited: A Review Essay On ‘There Is A God’, Gary R. Habermas Jan 2007

Antony Flew’S Deism Revisited: A Review Essay On ‘There Is A God’, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

When preeminent philosophical atheist Antony Flew announced in 2004 that he had come to believe in God's existence and was probably best considered a deist, the reaction from both believers and skeptics was "off the chart." Few religious stories had this sort of appeal and impact, across the spectrum, both popular as well as theoretical. No recent change of mind has received this much attention. Flew responded by protesting that his story really did not deserve this much interest. But as he explained repeatedly, he simply had to go where the evidence led.

Masculine Fecundity And ‘Overinclusiveness’: Imagery Of Pregnancy In Wallace Stevens’ Poetry, Brian Glaser Jan 2007

Masculine Fecundity And ‘Overinclusiveness’: Imagery Of Pregnancy In Wallace Stevens’ Poetry, Brian Glaser

English Faculty Articles and Research

This article reflects on the imagery of pregnancy in the poetry of Wallace Stevens. It notes that the decision of Stevens to change the use of imagery of pregnancy indicates something about a development in his inner life. The images of his later poems show a diminishment of his earlier tendency to associate birth with death which is a sign of his increasing tolerance of the envious desire to be pregnant. The imagination of Stevens matured over twenty years and the changes in images of pregnancy are a measure of that change.
