The Pleasure Of The Blog: The Early Novel, The Serial, And The Narrative Archive, Kathleen Fitzpatrick Jan 2007

The Pleasure Of The Blog: The Early Novel, The Serial, And The Narrative Archive, Kathleen Fitzpatrick

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Blogs have in the last couple of years loomed large in the western imagination, but the ideas about blogs that have circulated both through the mainstream (particularly U.S.) media and through academic circles have been extremely limited in scope. In the first place, there is a common distinction at work in the U.S. imaginary between "blogs," which are assumed on some level to be doing public work, whether political, technical, academic, or journalistic, and "online diaries," which are primarily personal, if not exactly private. The personal blogs often mistakenly labeled "online diaries," as well as the more apparently diaristic forms …

Convivencia And The “Ornament Of The World”, Kenneth Baxter Wolf Jan 2007

Convivencia And The “Ornament Of The World”, Kenneth Baxter Wolf

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

The “Southeast Medieval Association” keynote address that Wolf gave at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina in October 2007. Convivencia is a historical term used to describe the “coexistence” of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities in medieval Spain and by extension the interaction, exchange, and acculturation fostered by such proximity. It first emerged as the by-product of a famous debate between Américo Castro and Claudio Sánchez-Albornoz that dominated Spanish historical scholarship during the Franco years. Since then convivencia has taken on a life of its own, fueled in part by increased interest in multi-culturalism on the one hand and rising …

The Fall And Rise Of "Owl", Robert N. Oddy Jan 2007

The Fall And Rise Of "Owl", Robert N. Oddy

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

This article is an account of the work of restoring Owl back to good health. Although the task was initially daunting–and I put it off for a while favoring new creations—it turned out to be interesting. I was able to relive the experience of building one of my early windows, going back to an early stage in my career as a stained glass artist. I hope you will find this account good reading. One of the features that makes the Owl repair interesting is that many parts of the window are plated. In other words, they are made with more …

Mothers And Non-Mothers: Gendering The Discourse Of Education In South Asia, Nita Kumar Jan 2007

Mothers And Non-Mothers: Gendering The Discourse Of Education In South Asia, Nita Kumar

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

This essay brings together and complicates three stories within South Asian education history by gendering them. Thus modern education was actively pursued by mothers for their sons; indigenous education should be understood as continuing at home; and women were crucial actors in men's reform and nationalism efforts through both collaboration and resistance. Gendered history should go beyond the separate story of girls and women, or the understanding of women as mothers and mothers as the nation, to see these three processes as gendered. The essay argues for the coming together of historical and anthropological arguments and for using literature imaginatively.

Using "Hybrid" Effectively In Christian Higher Education, Daniel L. Brunner Jan 2007

Using "Hybrid" Effectively In Christian Higher Education, Daniel L. Brunner

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Hybrid is just one of a number of terms used for the convergence of face-to-face and online learning, At the University of Central Florida (UCF) they are called mixed mode courses, In the corporate world the most common language used for hybrid is blended learning, Blended learning, says Bob Mosher, is about using multiple learning modalities, which include, but are not limited to, the Web.7 The blended learning term is also being used more frequently within academic circles,8 Because of the inconsistency in how blended learning is employed, though, and because our goal is not to describe learning in general …

Sex, Drugs, And Mingling Spirits: Teaching Nineteenth-Century Women Poets, Cheryl Walker Jan 2007

Sex, Drugs, And Mingling Spirits: Teaching Nineteenth-Century Women Poets, Cheryl Walker

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

Book abstract:

Twentieth-century modernism reduced the list of nineteenth-century American poets to Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, and (less often) Edgar Allan Poe. The rest were virtually forgotten. This volume in the MLA series Options for Teaching marks a milestone in the resurgence of the study of the rest. It features poets, like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Lydia Huntley Sigourney, who were famous in their day, as well as poets who were marginalized on the basis of their race (Paul Laurence Dunbar, Alexander Posey) or their sociopolitical agenda (Emma Lazarus, John Greenleaf Whittier). It also takes a fresh look at poets …

We Will Make Our Own Future Text: A Proposal For An Alternate Interpretive Orientation, Vincent L. Wimbush Jan 2007

We Will Make Our Own Future Text: A Proposal For An Alternate Interpretive Orientation, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

It is a tribute to the fairness and large-mindedness of the editors of this commentary that they would solicit and accept as part of this project this trenchant anti-commentary essay. I share the interest held by all contributors to this project (and many beyond it) to contribute to the ongoing political-ideological uplift work of African Americans. But I propose here to contribute to such work through a questioning of and challenge to the traditional and still dominant discursive formation--the commentary--that this larger project reflects and within which the Bible and other scriptures are generally thought about and engaged, and to …

Karmic Buyback: A Pilot Program, Cindy E. Dauer Jan 2007

Karmic Buyback: A Pilot Program, Cindy E. Dauer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Karmic Buyback: A Pilot Program, a screenplay, is the story of Oliver Harker, a water resources engineer in his early thirties, adrift in a world of lost social connections. Aside from this work, which he describes as "just a lot of redundant paperwork," his only connection to the outside world is his exuberant younger brother Van. With no father to speak of, and harboring long term resentment against his mother who ran away to Africa the day after Van's high school graduation, Oliver's defining tragic moment came three years earlier. It was then he discovered Eva, the woman he planned …

Re-Inventing Alexander: From Christian Warrior To Pagan Saint, Martha Mary Daas Jan 2007

Re-Inventing Alexander: From Christian Warrior To Pagan Saint, Martha Mary Daas

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

In this essay I examine the appropriation of the Alexander legend by the Spanish author of the Libro de Alexandre to determine to what degree the poet's creation of a new mythic hero successfully fulfills the ideal of the Christian medieval warrior. By examining the poet's attempt at Christianizing the great warrior, I prove that Alexander retains his standing as a mythic figure: one who cannot be contained within a single ideological interpretation.

Not For The King, But For God And Country: Scandinavians And Ethnic Identity During The American Civil War, Anders Rasmussen Jan 2007

Not For The King, But For God And Country: Scandinavians And Ethnic Identity During The American Civil War, Anders Rasmussen

The Bridge

The history of the United States is essentially a history of immigration. From the Spanish arrival in Florida in 1565 to present-day America, immigration has been a continuous factor in the history of the United States, and it has repeatedly challenged notions of what it means to be American. Among the many immigrant groups which came to the United States were the Scandinavians. The Civil War between 1861 and 1865 forced these newly arrived immigrants to make important decisions in regards to ethnicity, politics and nationality. This article explores the Scandinavian Civil War experience through the prism of ethnicity and …

“You Can Become All Flame”: Do The Desert Fathers Have Anything To Say To Us Today?, Arlen M. Hanson Jan 2007

“You Can Become All Flame”: Do The Desert Fathers Have Anything To Say To Us Today?, Arlen M. Hanson

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper will examine Apophthegmata patrum, the Sayings of the Desert Fathers, in a critical manner, along with selected works from scholars of the Apophthegmata, in the light of recent “popular” treatments of the Apophthegmata, to discuss whether and what the Apophthegmata patrum might have to say to 21st century Christians in the way of timeless truth despite apparent harshness, extremism found in the Apophthegmata, and the fact that approximately seventeen hundred years have fundamentally given us a vastly different way of seeing the world and ourselves in it.

Who Knew? Admissibility Of Subsequent Remedial Measures When Defendants Are Without Knowledge Of The Injuries, Mark G. Boyko, Ryan G. Vacca Jan 2007

Who Knew? Admissibility Of Subsequent Remedial Measures When Defendants Are Without Knowledge Of The Injuries, Mark G. Boyko, Ryan G. Vacca

Law Faculty Scholarship

Federal Rule of Evidence 407 prohibits the introduction of subsequent remedial measures for the purposes of demonstrating negligence, culpable conduct, or product defect. But the rule breaks down, in application and purpose, when a defendant undertakes the new safety measure after the plaintiff's injury, but before the defendant had knowledge of the loss. Such a situation is not uncommon. Would-be defendants frequently improve their products and product safety for a variety of reasons. Toxic exposure cases, where exposure often predates diagnosis of the injury by a decade or more, represent a prime example of cases where defendants are likely to …

Water was the most efficient means of transportation and travel in the ancient Greek world. Evidence of the movement of commodities and people comes from a combination of literary, iconographical, and archaeological sources.
