Navigating The Past: Brown University And The Voyage Of The Slave Ship Sally, 1764-65, James T. Campbell

Imagining America

James T. Campbell, asssociate professor of American Civilization, Africana Studies, and History, Brown University, asks: “What happens if we see our past whole? How might we take full ownership of our history, not only of the aspects that are gracious and honorable but also of those that are grievous and horrifying? What responsibilities, if any, rest upon us in the present as inheritors of this mixed legacy? Brown’s Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice represents one institution’s attempt to answer this question.”

In this essay, originally given as the keynote address for Imagining America’s 2007 conference, James Campbell examines the …

Visual Culture Archaeology: A Criti/Politi/Cal Methodology Of Image And Identity, James Haywood Rolling Jr. Jan 2007

Visual Culture Archaeology: A Criti/Politi/Cal Methodology Of Image And Identity, James Haywood Rolling Jr.

Teaching and Leadership - All Scholarship

This study argues the efficacy of the phenomenological cultural work of a visual culture archaeology that liberates a political and critical identity, resistant to domination, authoring social change and its own agency through multiple and incommensurable positions. Built upon Foucauldian premises, visual culture archaeology is developed as a methodology for discursive un-naming and re-naming, and emerges from the inherence and attenuation of inscripted meanings in the reinterpretation of identity during a postmodern confluence of ideas and images. The hybridized representation of the African American in Western visual culture has been unique in the effort by some to define us over …

When Saturday Comes: The Boundaries Of Football Rudeness, Tony Crowley Jan 2007

When Saturday Comes: The Boundaries Of Football Rudeness, Tony Crowley

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

There seems then to have been a modification to the 'structure of feeling' associated with this aspect of rudeness in British society. But there is one place in Britain which has been almost automatically linked with forms of rudeness which are socially unacceptable; a location where offensiveness, crudity, insulting behaviour and nastiness constitute not so much the exception as the norm. Or at least this is how it appears in the social imaginary. The aim of this chapter will be to explore this arena in order to determine what it reveals about both British society and its boundaries of rudeness. …

Jerry Bywaters: Lone Star Printmaker, Ellen Buie Niewyk Jan 2007

Jerry Bywaters: Lone Star Printmaker, Ellen Buie Niewyk

eBooks

Jerry Bywaters – Lone Star Printmaker chronicles the printmaking career of Texas regionalist artist Jerry Bywaters (1906 – 1989). In 1935, Bywaters began recording the prints he made, primarily lithographs, when he noted ‘“Gargantua” First litho made (1935)’ on the first page of his print notebook. This study is based on that notebook and places Bywaters’s printmaking career within the context of art developments in Dallas through the 1940s. It includes a catalogue of his prints, information regarding the history of each print, and reproductions of his known illustrations and ephemera.

Bywaters played a major role in establishing the Texas …

Religion Through Ritual, Catherine M. Bell Jan 2007

Religion Through Ritual, Catherine M. Bell

Religious Studies

This chapter addresses the ramifications of, as well as strategies for, teaching ritual as a central feature of religion. This marks an important change in the approach to teaching both religion and ritual, and one of the functions of this book is to address specific issues that this change poses to teachers and scholars. It is a continual challenge to imagine how to teach religion, using ritual, in introductory courses, in courses on specific traditions, and in advanced classes that include more of the theory of the field and extended individual projects. Teaching religion with a significant focus on ritual …

The Queer Tourist In 'Straight'(?) Space: Sexual Citizenship In Provincetown, Sandra Faiman-Silva Jan 2007

The Queer Tourist In 'Straight'(?) Space: Sexual Citizenship In Provincetown, Sandra Faiman-Silva

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Provincetown, Massachusetts USA, a rural out-of-the-way coastal village at the tip of Cape Cod with a yearround population of approximately 3,500, has 'taken off' since the late 1980s as a popular GLBTQ tourist destination. Long tolerant of sexual minorities, Provincetown transitioned from a Portuguese-dominated fishing village to a popular 'queer' gay resort mecca, as the fishing industry deteriorated drastically over the twentieth century. Today Provincetowners rely mainly on tourists—both straight and gay—who enjoy the seaside charm, rustic ambiance, and a healthy dose of non-heternormative performance content, in this richly diverse tourist milieu. As Provincetown's popularity as a GLBTQ tourist destination …

Uniquely Alike: A Review Of Great With Child: On Becoming A Mother, Melanie Springer Mock Jan 2007

Uniquely Alike: A Review Of Great With Child: On Becoming A Mother, Melanie Springer Mock

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "Considering my own insecurities, I began reading Debra Rienstra's Great with Child: On Becoming a Mother with some caution, as the book promised to take its readers on "the fascinating journey of understanding the power and meaning of birth." An acquaintance at a professional conference had highly recommended the book upon discovering I was the mother of two small children -- but then, she had not known my boys were adopted. And thus, the first few pages of Rienstra's text set me on edge: here was another woman sharing her pregnancy woes and describing the "harrowing intensity of birth." …
