Titus And The Queen: Julia Berenice And The Opposition To Titus' Succession, Michael S. Vasta '07 Apr 2007

Titus And The Queen: Julia Berenice And The Opposition To Titus' Succession, Michael S. Vasta '07

Honors Projects

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that one of the primary reasons for this apprehension towards Titus' succession was his "conspicuous love ofthe queen Berenice, to whom, they say, he even promised marriage. The affair of Titus and Berenice has not been given proper attention by modem scholars. Most ignore the affair or gloss over it as a novelty, yet this is an error. Those who do connect the relationship of Titus and Berenice to the political context of Flavian Rome, such as John Crook, mistakenly associate the delay in Berenice's arrival to the influence of Licinius Mucianus. …

From Matthew To The Mishnah: A Study Of The Sources Of The Protevangelium Of James, Laura Arnold '07 Apr 2007

From Matthew To The Mishnah: A Study Of The Sources Of The Protevangelium Of James, Laura Arnold '07

Honors Projects

The Protevangelium of James (PJ) is what scholars refer to as a non-canonical Christian text, which means that PJ is a text written by a Christian author (around 150 CE), but that the text was not accepted into the body of literature that was eventually canonized. PJ's exclusion from the canon most likely resulted from its unique and unfamiliar stories. The text includes stories of Mary's birth, her sanctuary-like bedroom, her dedication and childhood in the Temple, her betrothal to a widower named Joseph, the miraculous birth of Jesus in a cave, her continued status as a virgin after Jesus's …

Lynching The White Imagination: Changing The Dynamics Of Lynching And Rewriting The Cult Of True Womanhood In Grimke, Johnson, And Terrell, Melissa L. Antonucci Apr 2007

Lynching The White Imagination: Changing The Dynamics Of Lynching And Rewriting The Cult Of True Womanhood In Grimke, Johnson, And Terrell, Melissa L. Antonucci

English Theses & Dissertations

Despite critics'ack and forth argument over the merits, or lack thereof, of a uniquely black theatre experience, black women playwrights, much like their male counterparts, were once wholly invisible to the white community. But what makes their invisibility unique is their absence in the black world and in literary scholarship. Unfortunately, modern scholarship has oftentimes dismissed these exceptionally powerful plays, cataloging them as poorly written and lacking stylistic and formal elements. It was only recently that they were included in a highly male-dominated history of African American theatre and art. The question of their use of sentimentality, however, remains unanswered. …

Low-Income Women's Access To Education? A Case Study Of Welfare Recipients In Boston, Erika Kates Apr 2007

Low-Income Women's Access To Education? A Case Study Of Welfare Recipients In Boston, Erika Kates

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

In 2003 and 2004, the Massachusetts legislature dramatically changed state law to allow welfare recipients to engage in education and training to fulfill their mandatory work requirements. The research reported here had as its goal to document whether women who received welfare benefits between 2003 and 2006 knew about, and took advantage of, these historic changes. A fundamental supposition of the research described here is that low-income women should have access to substantive educational opportunities to improve their employment and earnings; raise children with educational aspirations and achievements; enhance their civic participation; and contribute to the state’s human capital resources.

Feminism In The Space Of The World Social Forum, Ara Wilson Apr 2007

Feminism In The Space Of The World Social Forum, Ara Wilson

Journal of International Women's Studies

Despite clear affinities, the integration of feminism into the World Social Forum remains uneven, in ways reminiscent of well-known histories of women’s movements with various lefts. This essay draws on observations of the 2005 WSF at Porto Alegre, Brazil and the 2006 African Social Forum in Bamako, Mali, as well as secondary literature, to explore the articulation of transnational feminism and the World Social Forum. Using concrete practices, texts, and spaces, I discuss different dimensions of the interaction of feminism with the WSF, including political norms, political geography, and historical trajectories. The relation between feminism and the WSF hinges not …

The Silences Between: Are Lesbians Irrelevant? World Social Forum, Mumbai, India, 16-21 January, Susan Hawthorne Apr 2007

The Silences Between: Are Lesbians Irrelevant? World Social Forum, Mumbai, India, 16-21 January, Susan Hawthorne

Journal of International Women's Studies

In this essay, I reflect on my experience at the Mumbai World Social Forum in 2004. I begin with a discussion of silence as methodology in research with, by and about lesbians. I examine the silence around lesbian politics as well as the silences between lesbian activists and those they encounter in discussion, political activism and research settings. I explore some of the differences and similarities between Australia and India both within the mainstream culture and in the freedoms or otherwise of lesbians. I then go on to describe the workshop I organized for the Mumbai World Social Forum on …

A Conversation With Onyango Oloo At The Wsf Nairobi 2007, Patricia Willis, Onyango Oloo Apr 2007

A Conversation With Onyango Oloo At The Wsf Nairobi 2007, Patricia Willis, Onyango Oloo

Journal of International Women's Studies

Onyango Oloo, National Coordinator for the Kenyan Social Forum 2006 and who also served on the Nairobi Organizing Council for the World Social Forum Nairobi 2007, has gained notoriety as an outspoken advocate for women’s leadership at the World Social Forum. His widely circulated article, “Gendering WSF Nairobi 2007 - Conceptual Underpinnings,” raised expectations among some readers about the role women would play at the Nairobi forum. In this interview, completed in the midst of that event, Onyango reflects on the evolution of his own feminist consciousness and the tactics he feels need to be implemented in order to infuse …

Online Bible Training: New Opportunity For Church Planting In Thailand, Thanu Wongthanathikul

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Church planting is the result of the work of the Holy Spirit. Bible training is necessary in the process of successful church planting. With the growth of the internet, some institutes use an online training program for training other Christians for planting churches. The purpose of this project is to examine church planting on the basis of cultural, theological, online, model practical and historical principles. Based on research and study, the project first reviews seven principles of an online Bible training program for church planting. It then reviews an application of this training which is based on Thailand's context, and …

Urban Renewal, The 15th Ward, The Empire Stateway And The City Of Syracuse, New York, Aaron C. Knight Apr 2007

Urban Renewal, The 15th Ward, The Empire Stateway And The City Of Syracuse, New York, Aaron C. Knight

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Urban renewal programs of the 1950s through 1970s coupled with the connection of older cities to the federal Interstate Highway system during the same time dramatically changed the look of those cities. Syracuse, New York is a perfect example city from which we can examine the impact – good and bad – of these developments and the effects they had.

Syracuse’s projects centered in and near the 15th Ward, a predominantly lower-income neighborhood situated north of the Syracuse University campus and east of Downtown Syracuse. This neighborhood of nearly 3,500 people would fall nearly completely between the different renewal …

Unspoken Prayer In Spiritual Formation: Tool Or Trouble, Wayne Lewis Apr 2007

Unspoken Prayer In Spiritual Formation: Tool Or Trouble, Wayne Lewis

Doctor of Ministry

The questions addressed in this document are: Can unspoken prayer be used in Christian spiritual formation? If so, how? And are there dangers that come with its use? For the purpose of simplicity and utility, the term "unspoken prayer" will refer to prayer that is not verbalized with voice or mind and is prayer offered to God as listening, focused waiting, or thought focused meditation. Unspoken prayer is utilized by Christians in forming a more intimate relationship with Jesus as Savior and Lord. Many terms are used for this type of prayer including contemplative prayer, silent prayer, listening prayer, and …

"Wenn Vernunft Volle Gewalt Über Das Begehrungsvermögen Hätte": Über Die Gemeinsame Wurzel Der Kantischen Imperative, Konstantin Pollok Apr 2007

"Wenn Vernunft Volle Gewalt Über Das Begehrungsvermögen Hätte": Über Die Gemeinsame Wurzel Der Kantischen Imperative, Konstantin Pollok

Faculty Publications

Albert Bierstadt's Images Of The American West: An Eco-Critical Reflection On Nature Painting, Sabine Wilke Apr 2007

Albert Bierstadt's Images Of The American West: An Eco-Critical Reflection On Nature Painting, Sabine Wilke

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In the Pacific Northwest we encounter images of the American West as place of utmost grandeur, i.e., picturesque images of spectacular Western landscapes that have circulated throughout history in specific ways that I wish to explore. These images of the American West - adopted, among others, by environmental organizations and the tourist industry - were, to some extent at least, shaped artistically by German-American painter Albert Bierstadt who lived and worked in the latter half of the nineteenth century and who was one of the first artists after the first generation of expedition painters who traveled West repeatedly and transformed …

Early Days In The Green Movement: A Personal Account, Rosemarie Rowley

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

From someone who from an early age had wanted to be a poet, and whose favourite poet was Wordsworth, it is not difficult to imagine that in some way I would relate to nature as a mature woman. For me it was not the difficulty of being a woman poet which offered the greatest challenge, since my father, a traditional musician, and my aunt who was a songwriter in America had encouraged me to write poetry, but the difficulty was of combining political activism with poetry.

Review Of Restoring The Connection To The Natural World: Essays On The African American Environmental Imagination, Uwe Küchler

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In her introduction to The Ecocriticism Reader from 1995, a landmark in the short and dynamic development of this new field of knowledge, Cheryl Glotfelty anticipated that "Ecocriticism has been predominantly a white movement. It will become a multi-ethnic movement when stronger connections are made between the environment and issues of social justice, and when a diversity of voices are encouraged to contribute to the discussion" (Glotfelty 1996, xxv). The collection of essays reviewed here, published in 2003, fills this gap in ecocritical research. The nine contributors to Sylvia Mayer's edition have critically evaluated various aspects of African …

[First paragraph]

'Industriehafen' is the ugliest place it's possible to find in the beautiful German city of Bremen. The first time I saw it, it reminded me of some of the more offensive eyesores around the Los Angeles Harbor or Wilmington where so many chemicals are stored in large tanks along the hills.
