Religion And Community: Mexican Americans In South Omaha (1900-1980) - Ollas Report No. 4, Maria S. Arbelaez Apr 2007

Religion And Community: Mexican Americans In South Omaha (1900-1980) - Ollas Report No. 4, Maria S. Arbelaez

Latino/Latin American Studies Reports

Mexicans, like all other ethnic groups that created the United States as a nation of immigrants, were adamant in establishing churches of their own. Ethnic religious affiliations were essentially of Judeo-Christian origin and benefited effectively from the tolerance of worship mandated by the Constitution. Freedom of belief was known, demanded, and exercised by all immigrants. For Mexican and other ethnic communities, religious belief and centers of worship were the very heart of their community and identity bonds, their source of strength and reason to persevere in a new society where multiple nationalities, cultures, languages, and ethnicities converged.

Learning To Love — At Any Age, Win Arn

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

What is it? It is not one of God’s attributes. It is the sum total of all God’s attributes. It is the reason Christ died on the cross for the sins of the world.

Remembering Win Arn, Gary L. Mcintosh

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Dr. Win Arn completed his life’s journey on earth this past December (June 26, 1923—December 13. 2006). For many of us who identify with the Church Growth Movement, his passing brought back memories of an important era in the life of North American churches that began in the early 1970s.

Bye Bye Rocking Chair, Win Arn

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Senior adults in most churches have more available time … give more financially (one study indicated seven times more) than younger members … have years of valuable experience working in the church … don’t go “church shopping,” nor do they often move their residence … their work quality is high, and church loyalty solid.

The Korean Pentecost, Elmer L. Towns Apr 2007

The Korean Pentecost, Elmer L. Towns

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Although Korea was one of the last nations in the Far East to hear the Gospel, a series of revivals early in the twentieth century quickly turned the Korean church into a powerful force for God. These awakenings transformed Korean culture and society and reached beyond its borders to other nations in Asia.

Fabricating Freddy Vs. Jason: Understanding A Motion Picture As A Social Encounter Between Fans And Filmmakers, Jason M. Rapelje Apr 2007

Fabricating Freddy Vs. Jason: Understanding A Motion Picture As A Social Encounter Between Fans And Filmmakers, Jason M. Rapelje

Dissertations

The break in the mass communicative chain, which separates producers and receivers from one another in both time and space, impedes researchers from studying motion pictures as social encounters. As with face-to-face encounters, producers and receivers of motion pictures depend upon the use of "rules of relevance" (Goffman, 1961) and "typifactory schemes" (Berger & Luckmann, 1966) for their encounters to take place. I examine the social encounter that takes place between some of the filmmakers and fans of Freddy vs Jason through the use of these concepts, as well as a revision of John B. Thompson's (1990) methodological framework of …

The High School Play, Kevin Drzakowski Apr 2007

The High School Play, Kevin Drzakowski

Dissertations

The High School Play is a creative work, a full-length play in three acts. Set in suburban Richard M. Nixon High School, the play explores the notion o f adolescent identity while satirizing the American educational system’s artificial construction o f these identities. The play is especially concerned with theatrically representing the way students view each other through flawed frameworks based on preconceived notions o f race, gender, sexuality, and intelligence, as well as how this behavior shapes adolescents’ construction o f their own self-conceptions. The High School Play also deals with the difficulty schools experience in addressing the increasingly …

Rejoicing Against Judaism In Handel's 'Messiah' (George Frideric Handel), Michael Marissen Apr 2007

Rejoicing Against Judaism In Handel's 'Messiah' (George Frideric Handel), Michael Marissen

Music Faculty Works

Scholars have too little investigated questions of religious meaning in Handel's Messiah, particularly the work's manifest theological anti-Judaism. Previously unknown historical sources for the work's libretto compiled and arranged by Charles Jennens (1700–73) reveal the text's implicit designs against Jewish religion. Handel's musical setting powerfully underscores these tendencies of Jennens's libretto and adds to them, reaching a euphoric climax in the Hallelujah chorus. Within its arrangement of juxtaposed Old Testament prophecies and their New Testament fulfillment and with its matching musical styles, Handel's Messiah could hardly have expressed more powerfully its rejoicing against Judaism than by having the ferocious tenor …

Learner Narratives And The Writing Curriculum: A Study Of The Strategic Rhetoric, Anil Pathak Apr 2007

Learner Narratives And The Writing Curriculum: A Study Of The Strategic Rhetoric, Anil Pathak

PASAA

Replacing the traditional view of the curriculum as a statement of what should be done in a course of study, the learner-centered curriculum takes as its starting point what is done by language teachers in their classes. In an attempt to develop a negotiated model in which the curriculum is seen as a collaboration between teachers and students, this project aims at analysis of learner narratives focusing on theirself-concept (metacognitive knowledge) as writers. The research aims to focus on the premise that as a cohesive group, learners do try to assert power that can potentially transform teaching-learning activities. In this …

The Figgerin' Of Aunt Wilma: A Literary Analysis Of The Narration, Poonyasika A. Abhayakul Apr 2007

The Figgerin' Of Aunt Wilma: A Literary Analysis Of The Narration, Poonyasika A. Abhayakul

PASAA

This paper presents a literary discourse analysis of a short story by an American humorist following Austin's Speech Act Theory as refined by John R. Searle and further elaborated by Brown and Levinson (1999). The text was found to be organized in the typical five-point (abstract, orientation, complicating action, evaluation, and resolution) format expounded by Labov (1972) and Traugott and Pratt (1980). The role of characters in the text was also analyzed and discussed using Fillmore's (1968) Case Grammar as further developed by Grimshaw (1990), among others. The narrator's point of view in this text was found to surreptitiously elicit …

English Next By David Graddol, Suriyan Panlay

PASAA

What makes this British Council commissioned report so fascinating is how the notion of 'global English' is explored in connection with international, economic, technological and cultural changes, and how these changes, in turn, could weaken the 'unassailable' position of English as the language of the world market.

Academic Writing Development As A Socialization Process: Implications For Eap Education In Japan, Mayurni Fujioka Apr 2007

Academic Writing Development As A Socialization Process: Implications For Eap Education In Japan, Mayurni Fujioka

PASAA

In spite of the increasing demand for courses that assist Japanese students to have successful academic experiences in their overseas studies, little is known about what is needed to ensure success in students' studies abroad and how to better prepare them for their future academic experiences overseas. Given the emphasis on writing placed in academia, this paper focuses on academic writing and views academic writing development as a socialization process into academic communities. In order to find what the academic literacy socialization process entails, previous studies on students' academic literacy socialization processes in North American university settings were reviewed, and …

An Exploratory Study Of Corrective Feedback In A Thai Efl Writing Class, Thanisa Choornbala Apr 2007

An Exploratory Study Of Corrective Feedback In A Thai Efl Writing Class, Thanisa Choornbala

PASAA

Although a large number of studies have focused on oral corrective feedback in communicative classes, comparatively, few have focused on the corrective feedback devices used in writing classes. Whenever emphasis has been placed on the corrective feedback employed in writing classes, the focus has primarily been on the written corrective feedback. Where oral corrective feedback employed in writing classes serves as the research focus, the context has mostly been teacher-student conferences. This study attempts to shed more light on the usage of the different kinds of corrective feedback devices during teacherfronted class sessions. It investigates the corrective feedback usage of …

The Kingdom Of God: An Ancient/Future Ontology Of Leadership For The Twenty First Century Church, Stephen A. Campbell Apr 2007

The Kingdom Of God: An Ancient/Future Ontology Of Leadership For The Twenty First Century Church, Stephen A. Campbell

Doctor of Ministry

The Church is facing a crisis ofleadership. For the past several hundred years the Church has embraced an ontology, or basic understanding of the nature ofleadership, based on a modern interpretation of the world. With the emergence of the postmodern world, Church leaders need to embrace a new, ancient/future ontology ofleadership based on Jesus' teachings on the kingdom of God. This will enable the Church to be relevant in the twenty-first century. Chapter two will evaluate Jesus' teaching regarding the kingdom of God. This examination will reveal four characteristics of that kingdom which will serve as the basic framework for …

Building A Reformed Life: Recovering John Calvin's Theology Of The Christian Life For The Church Today, Neil E. Trainer Apr 2007

Building A Reformed Life: Recovering John Calvin's Theology Of The Christian Life For The Church Today, Neil E. Trainer

Doctor of Ministry

The problem addressed by this dissertation may be stated as follows: How can members of First Presbyterian Church, and others like it, be assisted in both their understanding of God's plan and their appropriation of God's power for their growth toward maturity in Christ's likeness? To address the stated problem, we propose to recover John Calvin's theology of the Christian life, which understands spiritual formation as the necessary and progressive reformation of the deformed image of God after the pattern of Christ through spiritual union with Christ by the process of repentance. In this light, spiritual formation is viewed as …

The Heir Of Righteousness And The King Of Righteousness: The Priestly Noachic Polemics In 2 Enoch And The Epistle To The Hebrews, Andrei Orlov Apr 2007

The Heir Of Righteousness And The King Of Righteousness: The Priestly Noachic Polemics In 2 Enoch And The Epistle To The Hebrews, Andrei Orlov

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

It has previously been noted that 2 (Slavonic) Enoch, a Jewish pseudepigraphon written in the first century CE, contains traces of polemics against the priestly Noachic tradition. In the course of the polemics the role of Noah as the pioneer of animal sacrificial practice to whom God reveals the commandments about the blood becomes transferred to other characters of the story, including the miraculously born priest Melchizedek. In light of the polemics detected in 2 Enoch, it is possible that another work written at the same period of time, namely, the Epistle to the Hebrews—a text which like 2 Enoch …

Jazz On The River By William Howland Kenney (Book Review), Gene H. Anderson Apr 2007

Jazz On The River By William Howland Kenney (Book Review), Gene H. Anderson

Music Faculty Publications

Jazz has not always been "America's classical music." In the first decades of the twentieth century it was regarded by much of the black and white Establishment as unsettling, provocative, even dangerous - attitudes exacerbated by the social upheaval of the Great Migration around the time of World War I. Enter black riverboat jazz bands to negotiate the color line: to help "white Americans approach in an oblique manner underlying social and cultural changes that were too deep and too heavily laden with pain, guilt, and fear for most citizens to discuss openly" (5). Such is the thesis of Jazz …

Conforming To The Image Of Christ: Structuring A Spiritual Growth Paradigm For Churches Of The Stone - Campbell Movement, Jerry J. Dean Apr 2007

Conforming To The Image Of Christ: Structuring A Spiritual Growth Paradigm For Churches Of The Stone - Campbell Movement, Jerry J. Dean

Doctor of Ministry

There is a general need for churches of the Stone-Campbell movement to reach beyond reading for the gathering of knowledge for doctrinal purposes. It becomes necessary to balance the desire for biblical truth with a pursuit of spiritual growth. This is referred to as finding a balance. This balance is achieved through a process of spiritual development and maturity. The central claim for this thesis is that Restoration churches of today, given to a rational, empirical form of hermeneutics, need to allow spiritual growth practices to run parallel with rational thinking.

Gender-Linked Stereotypic Content In Youth Magazines, Devon Cadwell Bazata Apr 2007

Gender-Linked Stereotypic Content In Youth Magazines, Devon Cadwell Bazata

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

This study evaluates youth magazines aimed at or read by three different target audiences--boys, girls, boys and girls--and examines whether the magazines reinforce gender stereotypes, and whether the intended audience makes a difference in that reinforcement or lack of it. First, this study established a theoretical framework upon which the selection of the target age group for the sample was based. Piaget and Kohlberg's seminal work, and Gilligan and other feminist theory, is considered in the context of the results. Second, it defined stereotypic, counter-stereotypic, and gender-neutral attributes based on five previous peer-reviewed studies dating from 1957-1975, and confirmed the …
