Review Of Back To Nature: The Green And The Real In The Late Renaissance, By Robert N. Watson, Elizabeth Spiller Apr 2007

Review Of Back To Nature: The Green And The Real In The Late Renaissance, By Robert N. Watson, Elizabeth Spiller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Robert Watsons Back to Nature: The Green and the Real in the Late Renaissance identifies the Renaissance as the moment of an "absolutely fundamental change in its consensual interpretation of reality" (41). Fear that material reality obscures true knowledge ("things getting in the way of the Word") gave way to concern that words and other forms of human perception were key impediments to truth or knowledge ("words getting in the way of Things") (41). This decentering of medieval religious epistemology made itself felt across the arts and sciences of late Renaissance culture and brought with it a compensatory need to …

The Limits Of “No-Limit”, J. Peter Pham Apr 2007

The Limits Of “No-Limit”, J. Peter Pham

Human Rights & Human Welfare

One must acknowledge and even admire the passion that writer and photographer Ann Jones brings to the different causes she embraces as she meanders along the paths of her rather eclectic career, now spanning over three decades. Her first book, Uncle Tom’s Campus (1973), examines how her students, in a predominantly African-American college, were being shortchanged by the system. In the late 1990s, she took off across Africa in search of a legendary tribe ruled by women and supposedly noted for its embrace of “feminine” principles of tolerance, diplomacy, and compromise, and returned to publish a travelogue-cum-utopian Weltanschauung set in …

The Fifth Wave: Cultural And Commercial Viability (2000-Present), Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton Apr 2007

The Fifth Wave: Cultural And Commercial Viability (2000-Present), Randy Astle, Gideon O. Burton

BYU Studies

The Fifth Wave of Mormon cinema is the current period, in which a culturally robust and commercially vibrant new art form is beginning to emerge. Its most obvious manifestation is in the stream of Mormon-themed theatrical feature films, produced independently of the Church, made by and for Latter-day Saints. Richard Dutcher’s much-celebrated God’s Army, released in March 2000, made him widely recognized as the father of this new movement in Mormon film, but his groundbreaking work actually marks a return to the past. The LDS filmmakers of the First Wave also sought to create 35mm films to be distributed …

Shakespeare's Richard Iii: One Actor's Path, Jerry Vogel Apr 2007

Shakespeare's Richard Iii: One Actor's Path, Jerry Vogel

Theses

There are a few roles in theatre that are considered a Mount Everest of acting. It's no surprise that Shakespeare created several of these steep and treacherous climbs. Richard ill, as created by Shakespeare, provides all the stage death-defying challenges an actor could ever hope for, if the ultimate goal is to push one's ability to the maximum. There is a rich history of past productions, some of them legendary, to intimidate the actor from the start. There are the obligatory deformities to contend with, sending some actors to a chiropractor's table for the remainder of their lives. There is …

The Gospel As Holistic Mission: The Challenges Of Contextualizing Relief And Development, Wagner Kuhn Apr 2007

The Gospel As Holistic Mission: The Challenges Of Contextualizing Relief And Development, Wagner Kuhn

Faculty Publications

Contextualization of the gospel means that the gospel has not only been communicated but has also been understood, lived out, and has transformed individuals, and communities, as well as their culture. If we are to communicate the gospel message to other cultures, we must find ways to make it comprehensible without losing the message in cultural trappings. The gospel has multiple facets, of which relief and development are an integral part. Thus the integration of word and deed, being and doing, must always be the focus of true holistic mission.

"There Is Room For Both": Mormon Cinema And The Paradoxes Of Mormon Culture, Terryl L. Givens Apr 2007

"There Is Room For Both": Mormon Cinema And The Paradoxes Of Mormon Culture, Terryl L. Givens

BYU Studies

Sometimes a culture includes more tension than harmonious cohesion, often due to paradoxes within the culture. Such tensions provide material for artists of all kinds to explore in their works. Mormonism presents at least three paradoxes: first, the necessity to be certain in one's testimony but to also always be asking questions in search of further truth; second, the tendency to diminish the distance between the sacred and banal; and third, the desire to be a peculiar, chosen people but not to feel isolated. Terryl L. Givens discusses the treatment of these paradoxes in Mormon movies, particularly those made by …
