Transformations Of Menace: Naomi Wallace's Multiplicity Of Threat And The Legacy Of Harold Pinter, Charles Haugland '07 Apr 2007

Transformations Of Menace: Naomi Wallace's Multiplicity Of Threat And The Legacy Of Harold Pinter, Charles Haugland '07

Honors Projects

The focus of critical scholarship on contemporary American playwright Naomi Wallace has overwhelmingly been a drive toward theorizing a vision of utopia in her work, frequently finding her plays to be optimistic in resolution. The diversity of critical approaches in prior articles, though complementary, is striking. Perhaps, as Shannon Baley argues, Wallace imagines moments of a feminist "utopia" in which the barriers of "genders, class and sexuality" can be broken down (239). Using examples of non-normative sexuality present in Wallace's drama, Baley focuses on the way that the drama enacts a cultural feminist viewpoint. Perhaps alternately, Wallace paradoxically joins "death …

End Of Life Issues Among Hispanics/Latinos: Studying The Utilization Of Hospice Services By The Hispanic/Latino Community, Iraida V. Carrión Apr 2007

End Of Life Issues Among Hispanics/Latinos: Studying The Utilization Of Hospice Services By The Hispanic/Latino Community, Iraida V. Carrión

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on how terminal diagnoses impact individuals and families within the Hispanic/Latino community. Hispanic/Latino hospice caregivers, Hispanic/Latino non-hospice caregivers and physicians participated in the study, which explores the utilization of hospice by Hispanic/Latino terminally ill individuals. The data collected from 30 semi-structured interviews, ethnographic participant observations, and archival data were analyzed using structured and statistical analysis. Verbatim transcripts were examined through a combination of ethnographic and content analysis. Barriers related to language and culture, as well as immigration, are critical themes that impact access to healthcare. The physicians' discourses relate patients' responses to terminal diagnoses, including the Hispanic/Latino …

Applications Of Degree Theories To Nonlinear Operator Equations In Banach Spaces, Dhruba R. Adhikari

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Let X be a real Banach space and G1, G2 two nonempty, open and bounded subsets of X such that 0 ∈ G2 and G2 ⊂ G1. The problem (∗) T x + Cx = 0 is considered, where T : X ⊃ D(T) → X is an accretive or monotone operator with 0 ∈ D(T) and T(0) = 0, while C : X ⊃ D(C) → X can be, e.g., one of the following types: (a) compact; (b) continuous and bounded with the resolvents of T compact; (c) demicontinuous, bounded and of …

Application And Refinement Of The Karst Disturbance Index In West Central, Florida, Leslie A. North Apr 2007

Application And Refinement Of The Karst Disturbance Index In West Central, Florida, Leslie A. North

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A hierarchical and standardized environmental disturbance index, specifically designed for karst landscapes, was created by van Beynen and Townsend (2005). To assess the applicability of the index and provide recommendations for its refinement, the index was applied in four west-central Florida counties and interviews were conducted with local and state officials, community planners, and land resource managers. The karst disturbance index consists of 30 indicators contained within five broad categories: geomorphology, hydrology, atmosphere, biota, and culture. Data was readily available for most environmental indicators used to construct the index. Overall, levels of disturbance vary between the counties due to the …

Septets, Octets, Nonets: Romantic Chamber Music In Its Cultural Contexts, Andrew L. De Alvaré Apr 2007

Septets, Octets, Nonets: Romantic Chamber Music In Its Cultural Contexts, Andrew L. De Alvaré

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

In 1800, Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his Septet, Op. 20 for a chamber ensemble of strings and winds that included the double bass. This piece, an enormous popular success, became a direct compositional model for Franz Schubert in his Octet, D. 803. A great deal of scholarship exists connecting these two works, but does not extend to the many other chamber works of the Romantic period written for similar ensembles. To varying degrees, the compositions for large chamber ensembles written by Louis Spohr, Franz Lachner, Georges Onslow, Adolphe Blanc, and Louise Farrenc also take Beethoven’s Septet as a model. It …
